Conservation of Egyptian Vultures in Africa is globally important because it holds a resident population of 1 000 – 2 000 breeding pairs, harbours a significant but unknown number of Eurasian migrants during the boreal winter, and many non-adult Egyptian Vultures reared in Eurasia dwell in Africa until they mature. Africa comprises approximately half of the area of the global range of the species. Once considered common and widespread in many parts of Africa, Egyptian Vulture is now one of the vulture species that is most threatened with extinction. Egyptian Vulture is considered extinct as a breeding species in Southern Africa, and continuous population declines have been reported from most of its African range, resulting in a population reduction of perhaps 75%. Despite these declines, there is an apparent lack of systematic observations, and its current status in many African countries is unknown. Furthermore, little is known about the magnitude of the various threats and their impact on resident and wintering Egyptian Vultures. -

Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, 587−589, 08004 Barcelona, Spain *Corresponding author Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT - Algeria is a country from the Maghreb with a little known batrachofauna. In order to improve knowledge of the distribution of amphibians in this country we carried out several surveys in northern Algeria between 2010 and 2017. Maps with original data on the distribution ranges and niche model for every species have been made for the first time. This includes original data on breeding phenology, breeding habitat and terrestrial habitat features of the observed species. Our data indicated that several species could be more widespread in Algeria than previously suggested. The apparent discontinuity of their ranges and the supposed rarity of some species such as Pleurodeles nebulosus, Salamandra algira algira and Bufo spinosus is likely due to a lack of previous survey effort. Some species, such as Discoglossus pictus, Pelophylax saharicus, Hyla meridionalis and Sclerophrys mauritanica are widely distributed and abundant in the studied region. Our results confirmed the presence of several species in historical sites, but also the presence of numerous new populations. Some historical records of P. nebulosus, S. algira algira and H. meridionalis were not confirmed. -

Grâce à ces nouvelles données, il est aujourd’hui possible de mettre à jour la liste des rongeurs d’Algérie et de dresser un aperçu de leur distribution. L’examen des données de la littérature (articles, ouvrages et manuscrits non publiés) permet de recen- ser 31 espèces connues actuellement contre 26 lors de la dernière révision taxonomique. Dans cet article nous recherchons, à partir d’un large panel de données, à décrire la struc- ture de cette diversité mais également à évaluer les paramètres biogéographiques et cli- matiques explicatifs de la diversité des rongeurs d’Algérie. Nos résultats ne sont pas seu- lement utiles pour une meilleure compréhension de la diversité actuelle des rongeurs, mais sont également exploitables par les paléontologues pour mieux appréhender les communautés fauniques et les environnements du passé dans cette région du nord-ouest africain. NORTH AFRICA PROTECTED AREAS Towards integrated land management This North Africa Protected Areas proposal outlines a protected areas in the mediterranean towards integrated land management, mid-term programme (2002-2004) from Mediterrean Programme for countries ( Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Lybia and Egipt). The North Africa area posses a rich and unique biodiversity composition and rarity. The area represents a junction of historical and cultural crossroads in the mediterranean context. The World Parks Congress to be held in Durban (South Africa) in September 2003, WPC 2003, provides impetus for the process that has already been launched. This event will not only act as a showcase for achievements forged in Mediterranean protected areas but will also lend a voice to the experiences and needs of these areas to face the 21st century, as well as provide a reference point for active policies implemented after WPC2003. The proposal has been devised in accordance with the following documents that have been endorsed by IUCN members and partners: Guide for the management of protected areas according to IUCN categories, Towards an integrated PAs strategy for biodiversity conservation in the north africa and middle east region , The Cilento Declaration (1999) and the Convention on Biological Diversity. The main motivations of the proposal are to: Ensure more effective establishment and management of PAs in the area. Strengthen the capacity of PAs institutions and managers in the region Increase awareness of the values of PAs at all levels within the area Build a stronger WCPA mediterranean network. Local development and Cooperation. Priorities actions can be identified under these three objectives at three levels: national, mediterranean and international.
