A cultivator must patiently protect, water, and till the soil around the plant for fifteen years before it begins to bear fruit. Though this dissertation is not nearly as useful or palatable as the olive’s pressed fruits, its slow growth to completion resembles the tree in as much as it was the patient and diligent kindness of my friends, mentors, and family that enabled me to finish the project. Mercifully it took fewer than fifteen years. My deepest thanks go to Paolo Squatriti, who provoked and inspired me to write an unconventional dissertation. Abstract This doctoral dissertation investigates the writings of the Venerable Bede (673-735) in the context of miracles and the miraculous. It begins by exploring the patristic tradition through which he developed his own historical and hagiographical work, particularly the thought of Gregory the Great in the context of doubt and Augustine of Hippo regarding history and truth. It then suggests that Bede had a particular affinity for the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles as models for the writing of specifically ecclesiastical history. The use of sources to attest miracle narratives in six hagiographies known to Bede from Late Antiquity are explored before applying this knowledge to Bede and five of his early Insular contemporaries. The research is rounded off by a discussion of Bede’s use of miracles in the context of reform, particularly his desire to provide adequate pastoral care through his understanding of the ideal bishop best exemplified by Cuthbert and John of Beverley. -

TOWNE 175 TUBATORI E PIFFARI: CIVIC WIND PLAYERS IN MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE BERGAMO * Gary Towne n 5 February 1331, the councils of the commune and the people of Bergamo convened “in the usual way, to the sounds of bells and the voices of heralds,” for O formal submission to King John of Bohemia.1 This event marked the end of the city’s self-government as an independent commune. Yet old customs survived, and subsequent meetings for organization of defense were “convened by trumpets and bells.”2 This fi rst documentation of Bergamo’s civic musicians prefaces the city’s earliest complete surviving set of statutes (1331), but it suggests that city heralds playing the trumpet had fulfi lled an important public role since the unremembered past. Bergamo is a city of great antiquity. It stands about thirty-fi ve miles northeast of Mi- lan, on the last rocky ridge where the foothills of the Alps descend to the Lombard plain. Settlement began as early as 1200 BC and in the sixth century the town was occupied by the Etruscans and then the Gauls, who gave the city its original name Bérghem, latinized as Bergomum when Rome took the city in 196 BC.3 The city received Roman citizenship from Julius Caesar in 49 BC and thrived under the empire until sacked by the Goths, Huns, Vandals, and Alans in the fi fth century. In the next three centuries, the city was controlled by the Goths and the Lombards; then under the Franks it became a part of the Holy Roman Empire. -

Many more Saints and Martyrs have since been entered into this calendar commemorating the heroic faith, the holy deeds, the exemplary lives, and in many cases the glorious deaths of these Milites Christi, or Soldiers of Christ, who gave 1 every fiber of their being to God for His glory, for the sanctification of His Holy Catholic Church, for the conversion of sinners both at home and in partibus infidelium 1, for the salvation of souls, and for the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, even as He had last commanded His holy Apostles: “Euntes ergo docete omnes gentes: baptizantes eos in nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Docentes eos servare omnia quæcumque mandavi vobis.” “Going therefore, teach all nations: baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” (St. Matthew 28.19-20) While the Martyrology presented is complete, it nevertheless does not present us with great detail concerning the lives of those whose names are forever indited within it, still less the complete circumstances surrounding and leading up to their martyrdom. For greater detail of their lives, the sources now available on the Internet are extensive and we encourage you to explore them.2 As it stands, the Martyrology is eminently suited to a brief daily reflection that will inspire us to greater fervor, even to imitate these conspicuously holy men and women in whatever measure our own state in life affords us through the grace and providence of Almighty God. -

Mediterranean Networks and Italian Trade in an Era of Calamity Romney David Smith Doctorate of Philosophy Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto. 2016 ABSTRACT In the eleventh century, commercial dominance of the Mediterranean passed from the Muslim and Jewish traders of the House of Islam to the Italians of such maritime cities as Pisa or Amalfi. Although the outcome of this economic transition is well-known, the purpose of this study is to consider the mechanisms that motored Italian takeover. An examination of the characteristics of the trade network, both before and after the economic transition, finds that little structural change occurred; it is therefore argued that Italian merchants operated in conformity with the commercial paradigms of the existing Muslim and Jewish trade network, which are known to us from the Cairo Geniza. It was only the coincidence of major political failure in the large Mediterranean polities that enabled a realignment of Italian merchants from participants to dominant players in the existing trade network. This political failure, which I term “the great calamity,” saw the end of the Caliphate of Cordoba and left both Byzantium and the !ii ABSTRACT Fatimid Caliphate much reduced,
