My name is Anthony Brown, and with Ken Kimery we are conducting the Smithsonian National Endowment for the Arts Oral History Program interview with Mr. Benny Golson, arranger, composer, elder statesman, tenor saxophonist. I should say probably the sterling example of integrity. How else can I preface my remarks about one of my heroes in this music, Benny Golson, in his house in Los Angeles? Good afternoon, Mr. Benny Golson. How are you today? Golson: Good afternoon. Brown: We’d like to start – this is the oral history interview that we will attempt to capture your life and music. As an oral history, we’re going to begin from the very beginning. So if you could start by telling us your first – your full name (given at birth), your birthplace, and birthdate. Kevin Mahogany's Kansas City Revue Featuring the Music of Big Joe Turner
Kevin Mahogany Biography Mahogany’s arrival in the early 90’s on the jazz scene created an unprecedented stir and resurgence of vocal jazz. Noted writer Whitney Balliett said, “New female jazz singers seem to appear regularly, but for a long time the space behind Joe Williams, Mel Tormé, and Ray Charles has been empty…there is little (Mahogany) cannot do. He has absorbed Billy Eckstine, Williams, Charles, Al Hibbler, Betty Carter, and Leo Watson. He can sing the blues and he can sing ballads. He can scat. He can sing Monk and Gillespie and John Lewis and Miles Davis, and he can sing soul songs and novelty songs. And he is a startling gospel singer who shouts, hums, bends notes in two, growls, and locks every syllable to five or six notes." Born in 1958 in Kansas City, Missouri, Mahogany grew up listening to the richly diverse musical sounds of his hometown, where jazz and blues had reigned supreme in the early 1900s. He studied clarinet and piano in his formative years and was tutored at the Charlie Parker Foundation. Working regularly in the Eddie Baker New Breed Orchestra in Kansas City, Mahogany was an accomplished baritone saxophonist by the age of 12 and was teaching clarinet by the time he was 14. Mahogany developed a keen interest in vocals while studying music at Baker University, where he established a jazz choir and also led two groups focusing on R&B and classic soul. He graduated with a BFA in Music, English, and Drama in 1981. Mahogany recorded three well-received albums with Enja, the independent German label, before signing with Warner Brothers in 1995. -

Jazz Jazz is a uniquely American music genre that began in New Orleans around 1900, and is characterized by improvisation, strong rhythms including syncopation and other rhythmic invention, and enriched chords and tonal colors. Early jazz was followed by Dixieland, swing, bebop, fusion, and free jazz. Piano, brass instruments especially trumpets and trombones, and woodwinds, especially saxophones and clarinets, are often featured soloists. Jazz in Missouri Both St. Louis and Kansas City have played important roles in the history of jazz in America. Musicians came north to St. Louis from New Orleans where jazz began, and soon the city was a hotbed of jazz. Musicians who played on the Mississippi riverboats were not really playing jazz, as the music on the boats was written out and not improvised, but when the boats docked the musicians went to the city’s many clubs and played well into the night. Some of the artists to come out of St. Louis include trumpeters Clark Terry, Miles Davis and Lester Bowie, saxophonist Oliver Nelson, and, more recently, pianist Peter Martin. Because of the many jazz trumpeters to develop in St. Louis, it has been called by some “City of Gabriels,” which is also the title of a book on jazz in St. Louis by jazz historian and former radio DJ, Dennis Owsley. Jazz in Kansas City, like jazz in St. Louis, grew out of ragtime, blues and band music, and its jazz clubs thrived even during the Depression because of the Pendergast political machine that made it a 24-hour town. Because of its location, Kansas City was connected to the “territory bands” that played the upper Midwest and the Southwest, and Kansas City bands adopted a feel of four even beats and tended to have long solos.
