OTTAWA SENATORS 2018 NHL Draft Ottawa Senators draft notes Draft summary: The Senators have drafted a total of 211 players since the team first participated in an NHL Draft in 1992. The team has not had a first-round selection on two occasions: in 2010 and in 2014. Ottawa traded its first-round pick (16th overall) in 2010 to St. Louis in exchange for defenceman David Rundblad. On Dec. 17, 2011, the Senators traded Rundblad and their second-round selection in 2012 to the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for forward Kyle Turris. The Senators traded their first-round pick in 2014 to the Anaheim Ducks along with forwards Stefan Noesen and Jakob Silfverberg in exchange for Bobby Ryan on July 5, 2013. Position breakdown: Of Ottawa’s 211 picks, 21 have been goaltenders, 76 have been defencemen, 43 centres, 35 left wingers and 36 right wingers. In the Senators organization: As of June 21, forty (40) of the Senators all-time draft picks remain within the organization as either a prospect or current roster player. The Senators yesterday and today: Three hundred and forty-eight (348) players have played at least one game for Ottawa since the 1992-93 season, 87 of which were drafted by the Senators – seven goaltenders, 26 defencemen, 25 centres, 13 left wingers and 16 right wingers. First class: Twenty-two (22) of Ottawa’s 28 first-round selections have played for the Senators, including current organizational roster players Logan Brown (2016), Cody Ceci (2012), Thomas Chabot (2015), Erik Karlsson (2008), Jim O’Brien (2007) and Colin White (2015) while five others have played with other NHL teams; Bryan Berard (1995 – NYI, TOR, NYR, BOS, CHI and CBJ), Mathieu Chouinard (1998 – LA), Tim Gleason (2001 – LA, CAR and TOR), Jakub Klepis (2002 – WSH) and Stefan Noeson (2011 – ANA, NJ). The Senators have selected first-overall on three occasions: Alexandre Daigle (1993), Berard (1995) and Chris Phillips (1996). Draft picks and NHL experience: A total of 104 (which includes Chouinard twice) drafted players (11 goaltenders, 32 defencemen, 28 centres, 14 left wingers and 19 right wingers) selected by the Senators since 1992 have played at least one game in the NHL. Thirty-eight (38) of the Senators’ picks have only played for Ottawa. Forty-nine (49) draft picks have played for both Ottawa and another NHL team(s). Seventeen (17) picks have played in the NHL but not for Ottawa. NHL experience per round: Ottawa’s first-, second-, third- and fourth-round picks have produced the most NHL players for the club: 1st-round – 27* NHLers; 2nd – 17*; 3rd – 12; 4th – 16; 5th – 8; 6th – 7; 7th – 6; 8th – 2; 9th – 7; 10th – 0; 11th – 2. *Chouinard was drafted twice by Ottawa – in the first (1998) and second (2000) rounds. Picked to play in the NHL: Fourteen (14) draft picks have played at least one NHL game in the season immediately following their respective draft year. Tomas Jelinek (1992) was the first. Other players include: Radek Hamr (1992), Alexandre Daigle (1993), Pavol Demitra (1993), Radek Bonk (1994), Stan Neckar (1994), Andreas Dackell (1996), Marian Hossa (1997), Magnus Arvedsson (1997), Toni Dahlman (2001), Zack Smith (2008), Jared Cowen (2009), Mika Zibanejad (2011) and Alex Formenton (2017). Jelinek, Ottawa’s second last pick of the 1992 draft in the 11th round, dressed for the Senators’ return to the NHL on Oct. 8, 1992 -- a 5-3 home win over Montreal. Time for development: While 108 draft picks have never played in the NHL, or have yet to dress, three players have taken six years to reach the Senators and the NHL, five players took five seasons and an additional eight players required four years. Roman Wick (2004), Eric Gryba (2006) and Chris Wideman (2009) took six years from their respective drafts to play an NHL game with Ottawa. Julien Vauclair (1998), Colin Greening (2005), Fredrik Claesson (2011), Ryan Dzingel (2011) and Max McCormick (2011) required five years from their respective drafts to reach the NHL. The four-year players include: Josh Langfeld (1997), Chris Kelly (1999), Brandon Bochenski (2001), Alexei Kaigorodov (2002), Brian Elliott (2003), Peter Regin (2004), Erik Condra (2006) and Derek Grant (2008). Diamonds in the rough: Over the course of the Senators’ draft history, the organization has seen seven players selected in the now defunct ninth-round go on to play in the NHL. There were also two players who were selected in the 11th-round that went on to play for Ottawa (Tomas Jelinek and Antti Tormanen). Some notable late round picks by the Senators include: Daniel Alfredsson (1994, 6th-round, 133rd overall), Erik Condra (2006, 7th-round, 211th overall), Andreas Dackell (1996, 6th-round, 136th overall), Pavol Demitra (1993, 9th-round, 227th overall), Ryan Dzingel (2011, 7th-round, 204th overall), Brian Elliott (2003, 9th-round, 291st overall), Colin Greening (2005, 7th-round, 204th overall), Brooks Laich (2001, 6th-round, 193rd overall), Max McCormick (2011, 6th-round, 171st overall), Chris Neil (1998, 6th-round, 161st overall), Martin Prusek (1999, 6th-round, 164th overall), Karel Rachunek (1997, 9th-round, 229th overall), Sami Salo (1996, 9th- round, 239th overall) and Mark Stone (2010, 6th-round, 178th overall). Elliott’s NHL debut on Oct. 10, 2007, saw him become the lowest drafted player to ever play for the Senators. OTTAWA SENATORS 2018 NHL Draft 1995 the sole empty draft: The only year which none of the Senators draft picks ultimately played at least one game for Ottawa is 1995, but four of the team’s nine draftees that year did play in the NHL. Ottawa’s first overall pick in 1995, Bryan Berard, was traded in a deal that included the return of the second overall pick, Wade Redden, from the N.Y. Islanders, on Jan. 23, 1996. Redden went on to play 838 games for the Senators, which ranks fourth in franchise history. Stanley Cup winners: Four Senators draft picks have won the Stanley Cup. Stan Neckar (29th, 1994) won with Tampa Bay in 2004, Marian Hossa (12th, 1997) won with Chicago in 2010, 2013 and 2015, Chris Kelly (94th, 1999) won with Boston in 2011 and Antoine Vermette (55th, 2000) won with Chicago in 2015. Look for one or two updates in August, then one or two updates between September 1st and 14th. After that, when training camp is in full swing, I will be updating every two or three days right into October.
