Matt's daughter gives us an immensely touching and comprehensive insight into the whole 'Matt Monro' from wartime boy to International singing star. I'm in the business so found the detail really valuable in placing the context of Matt's path through life and show-business into context. The author; not being a professional writer ...there are perhaps critiques that could be made in terms of some digressions here and there or editing for length but, her name is on the cover so this might be to be expected from one so close to the man... and from one who actively has sought to optimize rather than trivialize or scandalize any of the nitty gritty that came along with one of the hardest climbs in the entertainment world. Packed full of quotable reviews and appreciations from many of the world's top music professionals (from George Martin, Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Paul McCartney, John Barry among others) and a geographical span which will have most readers exhausted at the imaginings of such superhuman efforts in pursuit of a dream, the book incidentally paints a picture of the ever-changing and challenging nature of the entertainment business - and some of it's colorful, dark, deceitful and downright weird personalities - around the world (not just his native Britain) during his lifetime... from a humble start in London pubs through multi-million selling hit records to a shocking and remarkable conclusion following headlining stints in Las Vegas. If you lived through the 1950's 60's 70's or 80's and haven't yet heard of Matt Monro (but you will have, otherwise why would you be reading this review!) you'll be prompted to listen to and buy his music... it's truly unforgettable and will enrich your life... much as this 'Portrait' has done for me. It's like I'm living alongside MattBy Mario DExcellently written. Read 10 to 20 pages a day while listening to "Terry" sing. It's like I'm living alongside Matt. Fabulous intro took my breath away. I'm around 500 pages in ( around 1970) and I don't want it to end. I was glad to read a small blurb about Matt in the Persian Room at the Plaza in NYC as my parents were at that show. It's a fantastic story told by his daughter and Matts a fantastic singer. I know how it's going to end , not good , but we still,have Matt's song legacy. So Great I'll Do it Again (Like Listening to Matt's Recordings)By UnluckyLindyMany millions worldwide already know -- because your ears, hearts, and souls have heard -- that Matt Monro possessed and gifted us with the greatest vocal (BEAUTIFUL PERFECT PITCH), interpretive, and rhythmic skills in the history of popular song recording and performing. The hundreds of recordings he made sound even better today as compared with the crapola being produced and pushed by a soul-less industry to modern tone-deaf (because uneducated) ears/minds. Even if you've never heard Matt's exquisitely beautiful recordings, or have only heard a few, if you are looking for a fascinating bio of a great talent's extraordinary life and times, you will find it in this book, The Singer's Singer. You will learn about a truly heroic life lived through harrowing wartime and poverty and then through better times, and how that life was lived valiantly while giving generously to others (and getting help along the way, most notably by some very special WOMEN). And what a loveable guy he was! Though the author reveals that like every one of us, Matt had weaknesses that harmed him while industries profited from them, we learn that he was loved as much by friends, family, and others in the music and entertainment industry for his good character, as fans have loved him for his excellence in his art. Only a family member could know many of the personal intimacies shared in this book. On the other hand, I was delightedly surprised to find that Monro's daughter, Michele, is a very skilled author. Her journalistic skills (research and writing) have crafted an excellent book (which left me wanting more after nearly 800 pages!). The writing and organization are that good. A bonus I was not expecting was all the humor you will find in this book. Matt was a VERY FUNNY man, and this book is chock full of accounts that will have you laughing and loving him for that as well! Even those who aren't compelled to read this book because they are already ardent fans of Matt will learn much and be extremely entertained and enriched, learning about the lives of this man and those close to him. Without a doubt, anyone who reads this book will do as I've done and acquire more/all of Matt's incomparable recordings, including videos of live performances. Matt gave us so many timeless works of art, absolute TREASURE. This book helps with that effort, too, being an excellent reference book as well as a compelling story. I'll read this one again, it's that good, and Matt Monro is THAT loveable. I thank the author for sharing this story.
