Purdue Swimming & Diving Information Guide 2006-07 5 Season Outlook Q&A Men At Work

Dan Ross’ Boilermakers have developed a blue-collar mentality heading into the 2006-07 season. With only one returning All- American on the roster, Purdue realizes it will have to rely on more than talent to race back to the top of the Big Ten and NCAA Standings. Ross is enthusiastic about his team’s work ethic and believes they can repeat last year’s success if the effort pays off.

And as for of motivation, and I am in awe of him and his talents as a coach. Joe and Craig, they not only improved on their own, but as part of the entire junior class that has completely stepped up its game. What are your initial expectations of this large freshman class you’ve brought in? Who do you see comprising this year’s relays? I’m expecting an immediate impact from most of the guys we recruited. Because of some of the new talent we’re trying to bring in next semester, Some of them have already posted Olympic Trial qualifying times and we could see completely different relays between now and January. The others have times that would score for us at Big Tens. Sam Wilcher was medley relays are wide open, but I’m sure it will be Joe Colley leading off one of the nation’s top ten swimmers in the 200 fl y, and we’re bringing in the backstroke, either Jin-Soo Kim or Aaron Koger in the breaststroke, in Aaron Koger and Nate Taylor, who were the No. 2 and 9 breaststroke Jon Ranochak in the butterfl y and Trey Smith in the freestyle. swimmers in the country. As the new guy with very little international experience, I told Dennis that I’d do anything for the team and coach any group. If I had to guess, I’d say that I would be working with the breaststroke group because of Giordan Pogioli’s involvement, but since their are four coaches for 21 athletes I’m sure I’ll have contact with each and every one of them.

Giordan’s been at these games twice before so he knows how to handle himself and, overall, this is a very mature group of student-athletes. Even if I’m not directly working with Giordan, I’ll be there to take a look at his stroke and help write his practices.

Adam Soldati Prior to his arrival at Purdue last summer, Soldati worked with Diving Coach – 2nd Season Olympic gold-medal coach Kenny Armstrong at the U.S. Diving National Training Center outside Houston. During his tenure, Soldati worked side- by-side with several Olympians, including Laura Wilkinson, Troy and Hometown: Sonoma, Calif. Justin Dumais, Justin Wilcox, and Kimiko Soldati. McCambridge, a three-time Big Ten Diver of the Week, was expected From June 1997 to January 2000, Soldati’s club program advanced to excel at the conference championships, but Soldati made sure she had six athletes to the U.S. Senior National Diving Championships, plus four company in the fi nals. In addition to McCambridge, junior Amanda Miller fi nalists and eight athletes to the U.S. Junior National Championships placed among the top eight in all three competitions, while sophomore and earned one national championship. At the same time, he was helping Lauren Hallyburton scored off both the 3-meter and platform. his Hoosiers win three-consecutive national diving titles from 1998 to Most rewarding were the performances of freshman Emily Wetzel 2000. and senior Amber Kerns. Wetzel placed eighth off the tower, and Kerns, Soldati, 31, is married to Kimiko Hirai Soldati, who was a member who had never scored at Big Tens prior to this past year, placed 11th off of 2004 U.S. Olympic Diving Team. The couple’s fi rst child, Blake, was the platform with 223.95 points. born in November of 2005. Soldati took McCambridge and Miller to the NCAA Championships, where the torch was passed from senior to junior. On the fi rst day of competition, McCambridge won the fourth All-America citation of her career in 1-meter competition, while Miller placed 37th. The following day, Miller improved to 11th off the 3-meter to earn the fi rst honorable mention All-America certifi cate of her career. On the third and fi nal day she jumped to fi fth place off the platform. Among divers, Purdue was the fourth-highest scoring school at the national championships with 45 points. During the summer of 2006, Soldati kept up with Miller, taking her from the U.S. Open, to the Columbus, Ohio-based International Invitational to the U.S. National Championships. At the national meet in August, Miller place third off the 1-meter and won the prelims off the 3-meter. It’s hard to say if Soldati had a better year on the men’s side even though he did receive men’s Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year honors. During the course of last season, Soldati witnessed junior Steve LoBue erase all previous varsity records and win three Big Ten Diver of the Week awards. Senior Josh Karshen also excelled under Soldati’s watch, winning a Diver of the Week honor in late October and coming within fi ve points of winning a Big Ten title off the platform. At Big Tens, Purdue was the second-highest scoring diving team behind Indiana. In addition to LoBue and Karshen, Soldati guided sophomore Zach Schultz to the finals of the 3-meter and platform competitions and the top 16 of the 1-meter springboard. In his fi nal season, senior J.R. Hills placed 14th off the platform with 272.15 points. LoBue’s stay at Big Tens was good, but his time at NCAAs was even better as he became the fi rst Boilermaker diver since John Vogel in 1962 to attain All-America honors. LoBue one-upped Vogel by receiving All-America accolades in all three diving competitions, placing seventh off the 1-meter, sixth off the 3-meter and third off the tower. By himself, LoBue scored 41 points (the third-highest among all diving teams) and helped the Boilermakers fi nish 16th overall with 59 points. Soldati believes that success in the collegiate ranks is only the fi rst step for his student-athletes. Not only does Soldati want his divers aspiring to become conference champions and All-Americans, he wants them to see the bigger picture – the Olympics. And Soldati has the experience to get them there.

Purdue Swimming & Diving Information Guide 2006-07 45 Lafayette–West Lafayette

West Lafayette, the location of Purdue University’s main campus, is the twin city of Lafayette, the county seat of Tippecanoe County. On the banks of the Wabash River, surrounded by rich, green farmlands, the cities are located 65 miles northwest of Indianapolis and 126 miles southeast of Chicago. With a population of more than 140,000, Lafayette-West Lafayette is one of the largest communities in northwestern Indiana, accessible from Interstate 65; U.S. Highways 52 and 231; and State Roads 25, 26, 38 and 43. Major bus lines and Amtrak trains stop daily. The Purdue Airport opened in 1930 as the fi rst university-owned airport in the nation. Lafayette-West Lafayette is a regional hub for restaurants, shops, museums and entertainment. The community offers 26 movie theaters, daily and weekly newspapers, 12 radio stations, a television station and cable system, nearly 150 churches of all major denominations, an art museum, a historical museum and 1,600 acres of public parks. Nearby points of historic and scenic interest include Fort Ouiatenon, on the National Register of Historic Places; Battle Ground, where William Henry Harrison fought the Battle of Tippecanoe; and the Museum at Prophetstown and Prophetstown State Park, dedicated to the preservation of Woodland Native American agricultural and environmental heritage. Lafayette also is home to the Long Center for the Performing Arts, Clegg Botanical Garden and Columbian Park Zoo. Located on the eastern side of the Wabash River, Lafayette shares the 13-mile long Wabash Heritage Trail with West Lafayette. Nearby Battle Ground, located northwest of West Lafayette, boasts Wolf Park, where people can see live wolves, coyotes and foxes in their natural habitat. Not only are there places to go in Lafayette-West Lafayette, but there also are plenty of things to do. The area serves as host to numerous community events throughout the year, including the Taste of Tippecanoe, ‘Round the Fountain Art Fair, Hot Summer Nights, Global Fest, Feast of the Hunters’ Moon, Christmas Parade, Gus Macker 3-on-3 Tournament and Trails of Tippecanoe Bike Tour. West Lafayette has experienced a recent renaissance of sorts in an area called “the levee,” located just across the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge from Riehle Plaza and downtown Lafayette. More than $100 million worth of construction has gone into developing Wabash Landing. The result is numerous restaurants, shops and apartments that have made the location a new focal point for locals and students alike. A diverse mixture of night spots, shopping centers, art museums and restaurants give Lafayette-West Lafayette a distinct and unique fl avor. Boasting the convenience of a modern city and friendly “down-home” residents, Lafayette-West Lafayette is one of America’s most-livable communities.
