The exhibition “She Who Tells a Story: Women Photographers from Iran and the Arab World,” is on view from Friday, Sept. 20 through Sunday, Dec. 1, 2019. The Ackland’s new acquisitions of Islamic Art will be on view in a separate installation from Friday, Sept. 13, 2019 through Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020. "She Who Tells a Story: Women Photographers from Iran and the Arab World" brings together the vital pioneering work of 12 leading artists, ranging in genre from portraiture to documentary: Jananne Al-Ani, Boushra Almutawakel, Gohar Dashti, Rana El Nemr, Lalla Essaydi, Shadi Ghadirian, Tanya Habjouqa, Rula Halawani, Nermine Hammam, Rania Matar, Shirin Neshat, and Newsha Tavakolian. During this critical time for Iran and the Arab world, as national and personal identities are being dismantled and rebuilt, contemporary photography reflects the complexities of unprecedented change. The meeting was between Anna-Patricia Kahn, who is the director of CLAIRbyKahn, and Catherine and André Hug, who are the renowned owners of their eponymous gallery in Paris. And the enchantment took place the instant Catherine and André were shown the Erich Hartmann oeuvre. Then and there, they decided to give a "carte blanche" for a Hartmann show to CLAIRbyKahn, the gallery which represents the photographer’s archives. Hartmann (b. 1922 in Munich, d. 1999 in New York) is celebrated for the subtle, mysterious poetry that emanates from his photography, the play of shadow and light that is captivating yet respectful. He embraced places, objects, and people with his camera, never unsettling the moment, always capturing it in a way that allowed it to be rediscovered. The Poetry of Daily Life exhibition features 27 images by Hartmann that magnify the glory of the ordinary and the dignity of the routine. The photographs on display are all vintage prints that have the unique quality of being developed by Hartmann’s own hand. This will be a momentous year for the Erich Hartmann archives as there will also be two major museum exhibitions consecrated to the legendary photographer: in Bale, Switzerland from February to July 2019 as part of a collective exhibition Isrealities; and then in November 2019, his Irish portfolio will be exhibited at the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin. -

These women offer valuable insights into the history of photography and women's involvement in that history. They appear in this study because examples of their photography exist at the Oklahoma Historical Society and the University of Oklahoma. They were researched further through the United States Census Records and city directories. The results of these record searches are discussed in Chapters One and Two in conjunction with a discussion of the individual women. This study is organized to place the seven women from the Oklahoma and Indian Territories into the wider history of photography and women's involvement in that history. Chapter One contains information about the trends in professional photography from approximately 1889 until 1907. Incorporated into this general history are four specific women from the Territories: Emma Coleman, Georgia Isbell 111 Rollins, Persis Gibbs, and Alice Mary Robertson. -

Prof. Andreas Treske June 2018 This thesis focuses on the increasing plastic waste problem in the marine environment and it tries to create an artistic reflection with the Cyanotype photographic technique in order to create a body of work that highlights the relationship between found Plastic Objects and Cyanotype Photographs. The project conceptualizes the plastics as the fossils of the future since the material is highly durable and much resistant than the organic components in the marine environment. The conceptualization of these “fauxssilles” sounds like fossils, focuses on the plastics and photographic series being “faux”; meaning “fake” and “false”. The Cyanotype as one of the earliest photographic techniques has been used for this series with a reference to the first photographic book by Anna Atkins, and this alternative photographic process has been selected as the Cyan - Prussian blue of Cyanotype technique has a reference to the marine environment and the chemistry (plasticity) of cyanotype prints are as durable as the content of the images of the plastics. -

THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY The Research Library of the Mack Lee Gallery 2,633 titles in circa 3,140 volumes Lee Gallery Photography Research Library Comprising over 3,100 volumes of monographs, exhibition catalogues and periodicals, the Lee Gallery Photography Research Library provides an overview of the history of photography, with a focus on the nineteenth century, in particular on the first three decades after the invention photography. Strengths of the Lee Library include American, British, and French photography and photographers. The publications on French 19th- century material (numbering well over 100), include many uncommon specialized catalogues from French regional museums and galleries, on the major photographers of the time, such as Eugène Atget, Daguerre, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Marville, Félix Nadar, Charles Nègre, and others. In addition, it is noteworthy that the library includes many small exhibition catalogues, which are often the only publication on specific photographers’ work, providing invaluable research material. The major developments and evolutions in the history of photography are covered, including numerous titles on the pioneers of photography and photographic processes such as daguerreotypes, calotypes, and the invention of negative-positive photography. The Lee Gallery Library has great depth in the Pictorialist Photography aesthetic movement, the Photo- Secession and the circle of Alfred Stieglitz, as evidenced by the numerous titles on American photography of the early 20th-century. This is supplemented by concentrations of books on the photography of the American Civil War and the exploration of the American West. Photojournalism is also well represented, from war documentary to Farm Security Administration and LIFE photography. -
