Burke An annotated list of the Curculionoidea (Coleoptem) (excluding Anthribidae, Platypodinae, and Scolytinae) is presented for the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) of Texas. The list includes species that occur in Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, and Wigacy counties. Each of the 23S species in 97 genera is tteated according to its geographical range. Lower Rio Grande distribution, seasonal activity, plant associations, and biology. The taxonomic atTangement follows O' Brien &, Wibmer (I og2). A table of the species occuning in patxicular areas of the Lower Rio Grande Valley, such as the Boca Chica Beach area, the Sabal Palm Grove Sanctuary, Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park, and the Falcon Dam area is included. -

Twenty-seven species are found in the Paleocene, 442 in the Eocene and 94 in the Oligocene. The greatest diversity of Curculionoidea is described from the Eocene of Europe and North America. The richest faunas are known from Eocene localities, Florissant (177 species), Baltic amber (124 species) and Green River formation (75 species). The family Curculionidae dominates in all Paleogene localities. Weevil species associated with herbaceous vegetation are present in most localities since the middle Paleocene. Insects are one of the Main components of both extinct and recent ecosystems. Marvaldi' ABSTRACT Larvae of 16 species of Entimini are described and illustrated, 10 of them for the first time. Larval descrip- tions or redescriptions are given for the South American genera: Cylydmrhinus Guérin, Entimus Germar, Malvinius Kuschel, Pororhynchus Schoenherr, Naupactus Dejean, and Platyaspistes Schoenherr. Larvae of species assigned to Naupactus and allied genera {Asynonychus Crotch, Atrichonotus Buchanan, and Eurymetopus Schoenherr) do not show differences at generic level. The larvae herein studied are compared with those known from other regions, and the taxonomic or phylogenetic implications of certain characters are discussed. We performed Bayesian and Maximum Parsimony combined phylogenetic analyses with the main objective of testing higher-level relationships and the naturalness of the major Neotropical and Southern South American (Patagonia and Andes) tribes, including some members from other regions. We compiled a data matrix of 67 terminal units with 63 Entiminae species, as well as four outgroup taxa from Cyclominae, by 3522 molecular (from nuclear 18S rDNA and 28S rDNA, and mitochondrial 16S rDNA and COI gene sequences) and 70 morphological characters. The resulting trees recover a clade Entiminae with a monophyletic Cylydrorhinini and Premnotrypes branching off early. -

Development of new biocontrol agents of Bellyache bush and Parkinsonia Abstract This project pushed the prospects for biocontrol of the weeds bellyache bush and parkinsonia to a higher level. Previously, a significant amount of survey work had been done in Central America looking for potential biocontrol agents but the species resulting from those surveys had not been identified or prioritised. Our MLA funded project surveyed new areas of South America, identified the entire insect fauna and assessed their potential for release in Australia. Before this project, we had not identified any high potential agents, now we have three agents for parkinsonia that have a high probability of being suitable for introduction into Australia. We have been less successful with bellyache bush but at least we now know with certainty that this target weed has few prospects. -

CURCULIO EDITORIAL COMMENTS Last issue I commented on a new program being considered at the museum which recognized patrons of a fund in support of systematics with a species name in their honor. This fund and program will be launched December 16, 1998 at the Canadian Museum of Nature. We’re looking forward to seeing the impact it will have on how the public perceives and appreciates taxonomic work. This brings me to an important point….just how important is what we do as systematists. I am of the opinion that very few people actually understand and appreciate what we do. To most, we are viewed as ‘stamp collectors’; certainly we don’t do real science. Real science requires lab coats, chemicals, experiments, lots of expensive equipment and lots of money. How do we change this view and demonstrate that taxonomic work has societal relevance and should be of general community interest and utility. Frankly, I think we spend too much time ‘preaching to the converted’….most of our products are technical scientific publications prepared for a very small and limited audience. This audience is generally our taxonomic colleagues! I won’t suggest we abandon this approach entirely, but I do think we need to give more consideration to providing the community at large with information that can be seen as immediately valuable and pertinent. -

Field Efficacy of Two Commercial Preparations of Entomopathogenic Nematodes Against Larvae of Diaprepes Abbreviatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in Alfisol Type Soil

NGUYEN2 1University of Florida, IFAS, 700 Experiment Station Road, Lake Alfred, FL 33850 2Department of Entomology and Nematology, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL 32611 ABSTRACT Spring and fall field trials were conducted to determine the efficacy of two species of ento- mopathogenic nematodes for the control of larvae of Diaprepes abbreviatus in a citrus grove with alfisol type soil (sandy clay loam). Both Steinernema riobrave (Bio Vector 355) as a wa- ter-dispersible granule and Heterorhabditis indica (Grubstake™ 100) as a paste on sponge at rates from 22-108 IJ’s/cm2 failed to reduce larval populations in the tree rhizosphere at 25 d post-treatment. Larval parasitism by entomopathogenic nematodes in baited screen cages was sporadic over time, with the only significant treatment effect occurring at the highest rate (108 IJ’s/cm2) of S. riobrave in the fall at 7 d post-treatment. Possible constraints to nem- atode efficacy are discussed. Las dos es- pecies, Steinernema riobrave (Bio Vector 355) en la forma granular dispersable en agua, y Heterorhabditis indica (Grubstake™ 100) en la forma de una pasta puesta encima de una es- ponja al porcentaje de 22-108 IJ’s/cm2, no redujeron la población de larvas en la rizosfera a 25 d después del tratamiento.
