Mary, Joseph’s fiancée was pregnant but not by him. Joseph contemplated breaking off the engagement but prevaricated out of concern for Mary’s reputation. Eventually, he married her after heeding the voice of God. Then Joseph took his wife to his ancestral – natal – town, Bethlehem, to be counted in a census that was ordered by the Emperor and put in motion by the Governor. It was here that Mary gave birth to Jesus. Joseph allowed his wife to sleep in an animal barn. That is the shortened version of the Christmas story; but it holds many messages for us as we go into 2020. Here are some of them. First, Joseph though deeply about things. He considered all the angles of all possible action. He prayed about it, listened to the voice of God (of rea- son) and then eventually kept his promise to Mary. He married her. There was no knee jerk reaction to Mary’s pregnancy. Second, he was law abiding. The law required him to go “home” and although his wife was heavily pregnant, and that is what he did. Third, he showed humility. Although of royal blood, he didn’t argue with the Innkeeper when he was told that there was no room available. He didn’t flout his lineage, he didn’t demand special treatment. Instead, he humbly accepted what was available and made the most of it. Fourth, he showed an uncanny sense of timing. They left Nazareth at the right time and arrived at Bethlehem in time to get the last space in time for Mary to give birth. In the year 2020, we resolve to strive for the perfection that 2020 eyesight purveys. For that perfection to happen, we must exercise the four traits that Joseph showed: deep thinking with prayer, obedience, humility and timing. Perhaps the most important event of 2020 will be the general election.
