While considered relatively small by Chinese standards - boasting a population of around 6 million - it is large enough to have a growing metro system and an airport and is well- connected by fast trains to other parts of China. The local government has moved its headquarters to near the school and as such there has been a significant boom in the surrounding infrastructure. The area is full of parks and very green. Most of our staff live within a 5km radius of the school and hence a real community feel is building amongst staff after hours. Nanwai King’s College School Wuxi 7

The school consists of four distinct sections with a shared pedagogical approach, enabling Chinese and expatriate students to benefit from cross-cultural exposure:

• A kindergarten for pupils aged 3 to 5 years catering for Chinese and expatriate children and offering a bilingual programme based on international and Chinese curricula.

• A Chinese elementary and junior high for Chinese students in Grades 1 to 9 who will study the mandatory Chinese curriculum delivered with a modern pedagogical approach in a bilingual environment.

• An international school for expatriate students from Grades 1 to Grade 9 offering the English Key Stage curriculum leading to IGCSE.

• A high school for both Chinese and expatriate students, providing a wide range of A-level courses with the option of the IB Diploma Programme being implemented later. Nanwai King’s College School Wuxi 9

Pastoral Happy, healthy students do better at school and the goal of the pastoral team is to provide individual support to every student. Tutors and co-tutors have an overview of how a student is doing both academically and socially. The aim is to maximise students’ potential in all areas of school life and to develop the skills required for success in the future.

All of our students have the opportunity to mix with students from their sister schools. This happens through our daily vertical tutor groups from Grade 6 and up, weekly vertical tutor periods for Grades 1 to 5, and through our mixed CCA activities each evening. Our pastoral coordinators promote monthly PSHE topics that are delivered through the homeroom and tutor groups – these include topics such as organisational skills, anti-bullying and healthy lifestyles.

We have 24-hour nurse provision and a full-time psychological counsellor while our university counsellors take an active role in student wellbeing.

Co-curricular Education goes beyond books and the classroom, and fosters the emotional, social and academic development of the whole child. This is achieved through individual support and a comprehensive co-curricular programme.

A broad and varied provision is integral to the school’s success, bringing all sections of the school together and giving pupils the opportunity to develop their own interests in the expressive arts, wider academic activities, sport and community service. On the last count we offer 89 different activities each week. The programme is options focused, enabling students to select the activities that they have firm interest or ability in. This ensures teachers work with motivated, enthusiastic and ambitious students, who work hard throughout their enrichment time.

Our co-curricular programme is built around the interests and expertise of our amazing staff, ensuring high-quality provision, maximum engagement and genuine opportunities to build lasting rapport with students. Staff make a commitment to the programme through leading or supporting at least two co- curricular activities. Many of our staff go above and beyond this expectation and actively seek more opportunities. This is testament to the ethos created here at Nanwai King’s.

The programme is further enhanced through a wealth of opportunities for competition and performance, across all key areas. It benefits from the engagement of high-quality local providers, who offer further activities for our students, such as horse riding, American football and golf, to name but a few. As If you are passionate about co-curricular education a result, Nanwai King’s College School Wuxi students will be and believe that education should not be confined well-rounded individuals, supported by an exceptional range of to the classroom, then Nanwai King’s is the school opportunities in sport, drama, music, outdoor pursuits, school for you. exchanges and in community service. The Kindergarten The kindergarten offers an open, fluid learning environment where lessons and activities are held both inside and outside of the classroom. It is a vibrant and exciting space for young learners.

Classes operate in pairs for each age group with each staffed by one Chinese teacher and one international teacher with additional assistant support. This allows the teachers to support each other in planning, delivery of the curriculum and the development of each child’s English and Chinese language skills.

The open-plan design of the kindergarten allows a fluidity in delivery that is essential in an excellent early years programme. The open plan nature of the building not only supports flexible and progressive learning but also fosters a sense of real belonging to the whole kindergarten.

The outdoor environment at the kindergarten is as exciting as If you have energy, drive and want to be part of something inside. Elementary and junior high school In the elementary and junior high school sections, students undertake the Chinese National Curriculum delivered via modern, international pedagogy with content delivered by Chinese- and English-speaking teachers to foster bilingualism as students progress. The aim is to supplement the national curriculum and to meet the needs of each child by giving a breadth of educational experience and academic depth in all areas of studies from core subjects to co-curricular activities. This paired bilingual teaching model is instrumental in ensuring high quality educational delivery, encouraging students to explore, discover and excel. Nanwai King’s College School Wuxi 17

International school Expatriate students entering the international school follow the English National Curriculum along with the study of Mandarin to encourage cross-cultural themes and experiences. The curriculum instils the breadth and depth required to prepare for success at IGCSE and A-level.

Our international school offers teachers the opportunity to work with a diverse range of students with a variety of backgrounds. Dynamic, adaptable and enthusiastic educators will fit in well with the ethos of the school and the needs of the students. Our end goal for all students is success in iGCSE and A-level examinations. Balancing this objective with differing nationality and language backgrounds, as well as the movement of expatriate families in and out of the school, requires strong educators with the skills to quickly and effectively create working relationships with their students.

Our faculty is as diverse as our student body and the experience that our teachers bring to the school is a key reason that parents choose us in a relatively small, but highly competitive local market.

Matthew Conn Head of International Nanwai King’s College School Wuxi 19

High school The international curriculum centre caters for Grades 10 to 12. Grade 10 Chinese students study a foundation year of five to six IGCSE courses to support their integration into the English National Curriculum and development of English language skills. International students take the standard wider range of IGCSE courses. In Grades 11 and 12, students take A-level courses together.

What we are looking for in academic staff: • We are seeking to appoint highly talented individuals for all areas of the school who share our ethos, enjoy working collaboratively and cross- culturally, and who have the passion to contribute to the development of an outstanding school.

• We are building a diverse, enthusiastic and highly supportive community of teachers with a commitment to academic excellence.

• We are looking for academic staff who are fully committed to the teaching process and who want to make a real difference to children's lives.

• Every teacher has both academic and pastoral responsibilities and will be expected to contribute actively to the pastoral and co-curricular programmes of the school.

• As the school develops, there will be many opportunities for staff to take on responsibility - promotion from within of those who are committed and talented will be a focus. Nanwai King’s College School Wuxi
