BBBC Spring Royalty Program_REV.indd 14 5/8/18 10:47 AM T he Midwest Clinic Chicago, IL On Wednesday, December 20, 2017, the Brass Band of Battle Creek had the distinct honor to perform the opening concert at the prestigious Midwest International Band and Orchestra Conference at the McCormick Place in Chicago, IL. The concert began at 8:00 a.m. and the BBBC rose to the challenge of such an early morning start on a chilly winter’s morning in the Windy City.

Photos courtesy of Ralph Durham, Midwest Clinic Staff Photographer

Here’s what the Brass Herald had to say about the BBBC performance: “Early night tonight and an early start in the morning. Exhibits Hall opens at 9:30 am, but before that the Brass Band of Battle Creek is performing at 8:00 am. Now that’s a very early start for a brass band concert! I take my seat at 7:55 am, just behind composer Philip Sparke. The band takes to the stage and what a band it is: trombone section, Joseph Alessi, Scott Hartmann and Mark Frost; Steven Mead, principal euphonium; Jens Lindemann, soprano cornet; Rex Richardson, flugel horn. A cornet section which includes Chris Jaudes, principal cornet, Scott Thornburg, Mike Baker and Beth Cooper-Malovance; a dream team of baritones comprising Gail Robertson and Demondrae Thurman and a great tuba section which includes Marty Erikson. The horn section is led by virtuoso tenor horn player Owen Farr, with Phil Randell and Lisa Bontrager on 1st and 2nd horn respectively. What a band and what a fine performance in front of a very large audience. The morning starts with Midwest Fanfare, especially composed for the occasion by the man in front of me, Philip Sparke. As one would expect the opening gets off to a spectacular start. Then Steven Mead performs Karl Jenkins’ Benedictus, beautiful playing, so musical and worth the early morning start on its own. Chris Jaudes of Paul Anka fame gives us a breathtaking rendition of Maria from West Side Story. Then what is always certain to be a winner and has been since band programmes began – the xylophone solo – Xylophania performed by the entire percussion section of John R. Beck, Alison Shaw, Dave Coash and David Hardman. The final item I am able to hear is a pearler, Joe Alessi and Rex Richardson performing A Night in Tunisia, also featuring Terry Lower on piano. What virtuoso brass playing by two of the very best. The whole show expertly directed by the acclaimed conductor Michael Garasi. Bravo to the musicians of Battle Creek!” Richard C. Crain, The Midwest Clinic Board of Directors President, had this to say about the Brass Band of Battle Creek and their performance: “Once again, thank you for providing one of the most exciting events in the history of the Midwest Clinic! The concert by the Brass Band of Battle Creek was absolutely stunning. The performance was Spectacular and was a terrific opening for the 71st annual Midwest Conference.” The Brass Band of Battle Creek has been invited back to perform at The Midwest Clinic’s 75th Anniversary in 2021. The BBBC wishes to thank all of the generous donors and supporters who made The Midwest performance possible. We could not have made this happen without you!

BBBC Spring Royalty Program_REV.indd 22 5/8/18 10:47 AM In Memoriam Dr. Stephen Jones On Wednesday, April 25 the Brass Band of Battle Creek lost a great friend. Dr. Stephen Jones had been a regular member of the band for the past two years. Steve joined the BBBC after completing 42 years as professor of trumpet at Western Michigan University. His place in the trumpet world was legendary. He was a lifetime member of the International Trumpet Guild and a past two term president. Dr. Jones was well known for his meticulous work and for his lifelong mentoring of students. Steve was very proud of his colleagues and students. Even though he came to the BBBC late in his career, he had a huge impact on all of us. The BBBC was pleased to have three wonderful members from the Western Michigan trumpet faculty. Scott Thornburg has been a member for over 20 years. Robert White, who came to Western Michigan after Dr. Jones’ retirement, has been with the BBBC for two years. Our thoughts and prayers are given for his wife, Linda, and his son, Peter. Dr. Jones was 70 years old.

Pres Kool Pres was born in Holland, MI in 1931. He attended Holland Christian Schools and graduated from Calvin College with a teaching degree. He and Marge DeNooyer were married in 1954 and 2 years later they moved to Marge’s hometown, Battle Creek. In 1959, Pres purchased Brown Oldsmobile and operated that until 1969. During this time, Pres developed a great love for his new hometown, and the couple began their legacy of community service and philanthropy. Pres played a significant role in making his community a better place, including serving as mayor of Battle Creek from 1967-1969. He provided steady leadership to Battle Creek during challenging times. After spending 13 years in Byron Center, Pres and Marge returned to Battle Creek in 1982 when he purchased DeNooyer Chevrolet. He also returned to community service, and served as a co-chair of the 1982 merger of the City of Battle Creek and Battle Creek Township. He later purchased and sold dealerships in Sturgis, Plainwell, Okemos, and Marshall, as well as two out of state stores. Pres' strong Christian faith led him to be committed to making the world a better place, and he did that in many ways. He was a generous man; Pres and Marge were recognized for their philanthropy. He combined his love of golf with his charitable work, forming Battle Creek Golf Charities, raising over $400,000 for local charities through pro-am golf events. He dearly loved the Brass Band of Battle Creek. Pres served many organizations, including Battle Creek Christian Reformed Church, Calvin College, Burnham Brook, and Battle Creek Christian School. Pres' greatest legacy, beyond his love for his Lord, his love for Marge and his love for his family, is the impact he had on all he met. He touched many lives, reflecting Christ in all he did. His larger-than-life personality endeared him to people in all walks of life; from the waitresses and patrons at Bob Evans restaurant to the many dealership employees he got to know. His list of friends included well known people like author Chuck Colson and golf pro Chi Chi Rodriguez. He was always optimistic and always friendly, even during the last difficult years.
