The Study on the Integrated Rural Development of Former Sugarcane Plantation Area and Final Report the Pilot Project of La Luisa Area, Monte Plata Province 5.4 Model Area of Group C : Esperanza III Area 5.4.1 Natural Conditions (1) Topography and Geology Esperanza III, which belongs to Valverde Province in the northwest of the Dominican Republic, is located at the 12km northeast of Mao where is the seat of the provincial office and at the 33km northwest of Santiago where is the second largest city in the country. The area is at longitude 71°12’ W and latitude 18°27’ N. The farmland of the area is situated between the Yaque del Norte River and Northern Mountains and declines gently from north to south within 80m to 100m in altitude. The area mainly consists of fluvial deposits such as muck, limy sand, clay and gravel in the Quaternary by the Yaque del Norte River and its tributaries. (2) Meteorology Esperanza III is located in Cibao that is a granary of the Dominican Republic, and is 12-km far from Mao where meteorological data are collected. In Mao where is in the middle of Cibao Valley, annual rainfall records about 700-mm but Esperanza III is supposed to have more rainfall, more than 1000 mm, since the area is at the foot of Septentrional Mountains. A vegetation map shows that Esperanza III is a part of subtropical dry forest as the same as Tamayo. The meteorological data in Mao indicate that there are two rainy seasons (from May to June and from September to October) but more than six months have less than 5 rainy days. -

SUMMARY Islands represent interesting biogeographic features often defined by unique and dynamic geological and biological components. Such systems serve as examples of the basic fundamental units of biogeographical analyses: areas of endemism. The island of Jamaica is recognized as possessing a unique biota with a large number of herpetofauna species persisting only within the island. Further, Jamaica exhibits a dynamic geologic history characterized by an easterly migration and repeated inundation, resulting in a contemporary biota formed through dispersal. Here, we infer areas of endemism across Jamaica based on 57 amphibian and reptile distributions using Parsimony Analysis and Endemism (PAE). -

UK Overseas Territories Conservation Forum Championing UK’s most special species: the wildlife of UK’s Overseas Territories (UKOTs) and Crown Dependencies (CDs) FACT-SHEET ON: Galliwasp lizard Diploglossus montisserrati UK Overseas Territory: Montserrat The Montserrat Galliwasp lizard is endemic to (found naturally only in) Montserrat and was discovered and described formally as recently as 1964. However, sightings are very infrequent, and it was thought to be extinct, with no sightings from the time of its formal description in 1964 until 1998. The species is thought to have suffered further from loss of its woodland habitat and ash-fall resulting from the Soufrière Hills volcanic eruptions from 1995. It is classified as Critically Endangered and may be one of the most endangered lizards in the world. Animals can reach 180 mm snout-to-vent, or 40 cm (15 inches) overall, and have short legs. With very few sightings, their distribution, population size and behaviours are largely unknown, though they are All Galliwasp photos taken at the Montserrat home of Dr Bridget Beattie, in early 2019 by believed to prefer moist woodland habitats, Bridget’s daughter Emma and son-in-law Stuart. The habitat of the Hispaniolan Solenodon (Solenodon paradoxus) was investiga ted in the Dominican Republic in relation to particular environmental parameters (geomorphology, geologicalstructure, soil type, elevation, life zone, vegetation, rainfall, and temperature). Results are discussed in relation to relevant species environment interactions, particularly habitat preferences and life history patterns of the species. Comparisons on the habitat, ecology and life history are made bet ween S. paradoxus and the Cuban Solenodon (S. cubanus), the only other living member of the genus.
