Last year it was the Eastern Ranges that rose from the bottom of the ladder in 2012 to the premiership in 2013 – such is the transient nature of the competition. Which region will make a similar rise this year, or will it be one of the regular fi nals contenders that can take the next step in 2014? The coaching staff of each of the 12 regions have made the tough decisions in the preseason to cut their lists for their fi nal 2014 squads, and we congratulate all players named this year on a list. Last week previewed all the metro regions, this week we spoke to the country coaches to fi nd out their thoughts on season 2014, revealing some of the players to watch this season as well. It will be a great way to start the season being up in the region, starting in Shepparton (vs Murray), so not too much travel just yet and to stay near home will be a great start to the year. Who will be the players to watch this season?: DN: We have some players that played as bottom age players last year in Jake Maher and Jaden McGrath, who is in the AIS. They are two of the young guys. Billy Evans has had a really good preseason as well and there are three or four other players that played last year as bottom age players and we certainly looking for those players to step up. A real team orientated brand of football as well, so hopefully that is what we will see year for the Stingrays. Who will be the players to watch this season?: CB: We have a couple of the AIS kids in Tom Lamb and Daniel Capiron, and would expect them to be good for us. This year we have a couple of kids that have not been in our program before, in Geurts, Bennett and Dale that all played senior football in the local competitions in grand fi nals last year.

TAC Cup Round 2 TAC Cup Girls Round 3 1 - 2 April 2017 $3.00 Photo: Cameron Grimes Perkins a lesson in persistence Not much knocks the AFL men’s competition off the front page of the paper, especially during the opening round of the season. But the NAB AFL Women’s Grand Final did just that on the weekend, with premier Adelaide – featuring Eastern Devils Swisse VFL Women’s draft ee Sarah Perkins – recognised on the front page of The Age with the headline ‘Making HerStory’. With close to 100 VFL Women’s players draft ed into the AFL this season, just one now has the title of premiership player, with Perkins to be congratulated on being part of the successful Crows outfit. Perkins is a great example to up-and-coming female and male players, having been overlooked at the women’s draft but making the most of the late lifeline thrown to her by Adelaide to live out her AFL dream. The TAC Cup regularly provides over 50 per cent of the talent to the AFL at draft time, but it is only a small percentage of players from the competition that are draft ed. Each weekend almost 300 players take to the field representing their region, with double that amount on TAC Cup lists. While it is the elite talent that is oft en focused on in the competition, we should also recognise the role our clubs play in developing future Peter Jackson VFL and local players. The skills learnt at this level are taken back into the community, as the players become leaders from the education and training provided in the TAC Cup.
