McGrail and Ewa McGrail In this chapter, we analyze and critique the film Bad Teacher (Miller & Kasdan, 2011). In our view, it cynically panders to the worst aspects of contemporary pessimism toward educational outcomes in the US (Beck, 2012; Thomsen, 1993; Vandermeersche, Soetaert, &; Rutten, 2013). We argue, however, that Bad Teacher is actually consonant with Hollywood’s well-known narrative memes of redemption of the fallen (Carter, 2009; Reyes & Rios, 2003). -

Los Angeles Education Films and the Rhetoric of Nation at Risk, No Child Left Behind, and Race to the Top
Los Angeles Education Films and the Rhetoric of Nation at Risk, No Child Left Behind, and Race To The Top Bernie Sapir The perception of Los Angeles’s public school system reflects the predominant way our populace views public schools—negatively. Urban schools, such as the Los Angeles Unified School District, acknowledge that public education is struggling with key problems: high dropout rates, overworked teachers, and underperforming students. At the same time, public school teachers and administrators are attempting to accomplish more and more with less and less resources. While public school representatives—such as the Los Angeles public school teachers—would argue for reform efforts that would garner greater funds being allocated to the school system, others—including Republican George Bush and Democrat Barack Obama—argue that the increase of charter schools and a voucher system is a better resolution. I argue that part of this debate has been shaped on the federal level, and this federal rhetoric has influenced not only the public, but also popular culture. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan’s Secretary of Education, Terrel H. Bell, alarmed the American public with the Nation at Risk Report (NAR), putting our educational system under scrutiny and adopting rhetoric critical of the public education system. Subsequent federal educational policies have adopted its ideology, beginning with President George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind Law (NCLB) followed by President Obama’s Race To The Top Program (RTTT). This paper argues that these federal educational policies influence Americans’ perspectives of public education, and these presidential mandates’ impact is acutely evident in the Los Angeles Greater Metropolis’s school system, where the UTLA—the United Teachers of Los Angeles— has been the target of the public’s angst. -

Issue 135 December 2016/January 2017 A NEWSLETTER OF THE ROCKEFELLER UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY Memories of the Golden State O WEN C LARK Armed with a DSLR camera, travel guitar, two Haight and Ashbury-acquired shawl- cardigans, and three of my oldest friends, I left the perpetual fog of the San Francisco Bay. Having played out the scene a thousand times in my head, I had romanticized the drive down California’s scenic Pacific Coast Highway to levels approaching cliché. But despite trading the flashy convertibles of Entourage’s Vincent Chase or Californica- tion’s Hank Moody for a grey Hyundai So- nata rental car, it still failed to disappoint. /NATURAL SELECTIONS Practically every bend on that winding road greeted me with a stunning scene of pure, rugged beauty. California’s jagged cliffs are lined with earthy hues of bright red and orange, while each inlet of the vast Pacific OWEN CLARK Ocean contains a perfectly balanced array of turquoise and green pastels that one might have found on Winslow Homer’s palette. Despite navigating hairpin turns sur- rounded by 300-foot drops under cover of by All Photos total darkness, we made it safely to Big Sur. A smokestack towers above Mono Lake. My friends liked to joke that being the ob- Though I had fallen in love with the Cal- Tuolumne Meadows area of the park. After sessive ball of neuroses that I am, I had al- ifornia coast, we had to move on to the next returning to my friends relaxing by the lake, ready lived out the entire trip through the stop on our long list. -

‘I LEARNED ALL ABOUT LIFE WITH A BALL AT MY FEET’: COACH CARTER AS A REFLECTION ON THE SPORTS – ACADEMICS DEBATE AND EDUCATION HO MANH TOAN 11413016 ‘I learned all about life with a ball at my feet’: Coach Carter as a reflection on the sports – academics debate and education ABSTRACT How does Coach Carter (Carter, 2005) reflect the debate between sports and academics in reality? The research examines the case of a sports movie Coach Carter, which possesses many characteristics of the education film genre but has often been excluded from the academic realm. This exclusion reflects a debate on sports versus academia and the priority of academics in an education system. The film follows formulas of a conventional sports film but creates its main conflict around sports – academics tension with the spirit of an education film. In conclusion, Coach Carter denies supporting the myth that success can be easily found in sports and advocates for a balance between sports and academics. Though Hollywood has shunned the value of mathematics in the past, a trio of excellent films have recently been made with mathematics as an integral character. This paper examines the math topics discussed in three of those movies: Good Will Hunting, Rushmore, and Pi. The mathematics used in each film is analyzed for validity. For more information, please contact [email protected]. CASTING MINORITY GIFTED STUDENTS: THE PEDAGOGICAL IMPACT OF CINEMA ON THE CULTURE OF SCHOOLING by DEBORAH F. BURNETTE (Under the Direction of John Weaver) ABSTRACT African American students are significantly underrepresented in gifted education programs. This dissertation creates a space where gifted education, African American students, media literacy, and teacher perceptions intersect in the field of curriculum studies. Media literacy will be utilized to critique popular films by gifted endorsement teacher-students and myself. Due to the low number of states that require pre-service teachers to study gifted characteristics of children it is left up to gifted teacher endorsement programs to train teachers. By using media literacy to examine films in gifted teacher endorsement programs, I assert that the under-representation of African American students in the referral process for gifted education programs can be positively impacted.
