Welcome to the Marie Curie Hospice, Bradford We’ve put together this folder with information about our hospice that you might find useful such as the services we offer, how we can help and what you can expect from us. We want you to have a really comfortable stay with us, and get the most out of what we can offer. So just let us know if there’s anything that you need or something we can do for you, your family and friends. You can always speak to your nurse if you have any questions or concerns about your care, or have any thoughts or suggestions about our hospice. We’re here to provide you, and those close to you, with our very best care and support. We want you to be as comfortable as possible so let us know if you need any extra blankets, duvets or pillows. Call bell Your room has a call bell which you can use when you want us to know you need help. To activate it, press the orange button on the handset located by your bed and one of our nurses will be with you shortly. If it’s an emergency, press the handset’s red button instead and we’ll respond to you as quickly as we can. Light switches Your room’s light switches are by the door and on the wall behind you. Privacy If you’d like some privacy, you can display the ‘do not disturb’ sign on your door or ask our staff to do this for you. Do note that there may still be times when our staff would need to enter your room to check on you. Handrails We’ve installed handrails to help you move around the bathroom and when you’re using the toilet. We also have handrails along our ward corridors. Wardrobe/bedside locker To keep your room tidy, you can store your belongings such as toiletries, nightwear, underwear, non-slip slippers and day clothes in the wardrobe/bedside locker. Towels and laundry We’ll provide you with fresh towels as and when you need them. As we don’t have laundry facilities at our hospice, please ask your relatives or Hospice information for in-patient care Page 2 friends to take your laundry home. In certain situations, we can arrange to have some of your items washed. Cleaning We clean your room and bathroom every day or more often, if needed. Mobile phone You can use your mobile phone in our hospice. We just ask that you’re considerate of other people when talking on your phone, and that you keep your phone on silent mode. Payphone A payphone is available in our reception area. Newspapers If your visitors are unable to bring you a newspaper, ask our staff if you’d like their help to buy one for you. TV and books There’s a television in all of our rooms. If you’re sharing a room, we’ll provide headphones for you to use when you’re watching TV. Please see page 22 for the TV channels and radio stations guide. We have DVD players and a wide choice of movies that you’re free to use just ask a member of our nursing team to arrange this for you. We also have a small selection of books and DVDs, as well as a TV, DVD player and Nintendo Wii, in our conservatory. Internet access You, and your visitors, can access the internet by using the computer that’s located in the lounge. Wi-Fi is available in public areas of the hospice, including the reception area and conservatory. Select the Marie Curie Wi-Fi to register. Gardens and internal courtyard We have external and internal gardens, and a small courtyard, for you and your visitors to enjoy. Our external gardens and patios are outside your room. For security reasons, an alarm will be activated if you open the doors to these areas between 9pm and 7am. If you wish to go outside during these hours, please use the internal courtyard that’s located next to the dining room you can get there through the door to the right of it. Hospice information for in-patient care Page 3 Our internal garden is located at the rear of the hospice. Please ask us if you wish to use it. Smoking We have a smoke-free policy at the hospice. However we recognise that some people may wish to smoke and we’ll try to make this possible where reasonable. Please note that we don’t allow any use of e-cigarettes in the hospice. For those wishing to smoke, please follow the guidance below: We don’t allow smoking inside, or in front of, the hospice at any time. Anyone who wishes to smoke may do so only if it doesn’t cause discomfort to others. Our staff members are unable to accompany people who wish to smoke. Smoking is only allowed in the locations, and at the times, below. - 9am to 9pm: the smoking shelter - 9pm to 9am: the courtyard (an external area between our dining room and offices) Fire alarm We test our fire alarm every Friday at 11am. If you hear the alarm at any other time, please wait for instructions from our staff. Valuables As we’re unable to take responsibility for the loss or damage of your valuables at our hospice, it’s best not to bring them with you. If you do have valuable items with you, please ask our nursing staff to lock them away while you’re staying with us. Maintenance faults If you notice any room or equipment faults, please let us know so we can get them fixed. Electrical items If you bring any electrical items with you, our maintenance staff will need to test them to ensure they are safe for use in the hospice. Hospice information for in-patient care Page 4 Food and drink Our usual meal times Breakfast: 8.15am – 8.45am, or when you wake up Lunch: 12.30pm – 1.30pm Evening meal: 5.30pm – 6.30pm We serve freshly prepared food, all cooked by our in-house chef. We always try to offer a wide choice of dishes on our menu. We have a three-week menu that you can ask from our chef when he visits you each afternoon. You can also let him know if you have any special requests or dietary needs. If you have any special dietary needs or allergy to certain foods, please let our nursing staff know. They’ll inform our in-house chef who will discuss a suitable menu with you. While we may have our usual meal times, as above, you can still request food at any time depending on when you want to eat. You can choose to eat your meals in your room, or in our dining room or conservatory. Your visitors can also dine with you for a small charge just order their meals in advance with us. We offer a range of hot and cold drinks and snacks. They’re available from our dining room and ward lounge. If your relatives or friends wish to bring food for you, please check with our staff. For health and safety reasons, we’ll need to make sure the food your visitors bring for you can be stored and eaten safely. Refreshments Iced water is always available for you in your room. Every morning and afternoon, our hospice volunteers will come round to offer you a selection of hot drinks. You can also ask us for refreshments as and when you need them. Hospice information for in-patient care Page 5 Medication Please make sure you have with you all the medication that you’re currently taking, and do let our nurse know what they are. Your named nurse will administer your regular medication as and when you need to take them. We can also provide you with any extra medication to help you with your symptoms, such as pain or nausea, so you’re as comfortable as possible throughout your stay with us. Hospice information for in-patient care Page 6 Information for your visitors Our hospice visiti ng hours are flexible as we want your family and friends to feel they’re welcome to visit you at any time. However, you may want to be mindful that lots of visitors and late visits might be tiring for you, or that you might want to have some time on your own. For security reasons, we lock the doors at the hospice between 9pm and 7am. Just tell us if you’re expecting visitors during these hours so that we can inform reception to let them in.
