THURSDAY, 23 MARCH, 2017 BRIGHT FUTURES: PROMISING MAIDEN ARROGATE IN NINE FOR WINNERS IN IRELAND By Tom Peacock DUBAI WORLD CUP In this brief series, TDN will be catching up with the progress of some of last season=s more promising maiden winners from Ireland, France and Britain. Ger Lyons had another solid domestic season by putting 57 on the board, and no horse in his County Meath yard looked more exciting than Glastonbury Song (Ire) (Casamento {Ire}), who was sent off a 4-6 favourite on his debut for a seven-furlong event at Dundalk on Sept. 30, and took it by a stylish 2 1/4 lengths. He is entered in the G1 Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas. AHe=s quite a light, leggy colt and I didn=t want to run him on soft ground but I wanted him to have one run before I put him away for the winter,@ said Lyons. AWe chose Dundalk and it wasn=t a surprise that he won as we had him in our top three and Psychedelic Funk (GB) was third in the Coventry S. and Medicine Jack (GB) won a Group 2.@ Cont. p2 Juddmonte=s Arrogate on track at Meydan | DRC/Mathea Kelley By Emma Berry Dubai, UAE--AI think it was a six,@ joked Bob Baffert as he upturned a golden falcon at the Dubai World Cup post position draw to find the number nine on its base. THURSDAY, MARCH 23, 2017 AMERICAN LONGSHOTS NEW APP SEEKS TO STREAMLINE SHIPPING PROCESS by Brian DiDonato IN DUBAI The best ideas and inventions are usually born out of the necessity to fix or improve a situation, and the new horse transportation app EQUIRIDE seeks to do just that. The Alightbulb moment@ for the founders of EQUIRIDE came when trainer Stephen Lyster voiced his frustrations to Chris Woodside, a college friend and fellow graduate of the University of Kentucky. AStephen and I had always played around with ideas of starting companies together, and one day out of frustration dealing with horse shippers, he said, >We just really need to come up with a service where we can connect trainers to van drivers,=@ recalled Woodside, a Chicago-based commercial banker. AI laid in bed and thought about it for a long time and decided I really liked the idea.@ Cont. p5 Hoppertunity joins top-rated stablemate Arrogate in the G1 Dubai IN TDN EUROPE TODAY World Cup starting gate Saturday | Sarah K. Trainer and co-owner Rodolphe Brisset was eager to stretch the dark bay filly out around two turns and selected the 8 1/2-furlong Indiana Oaks at Indiana Grand outside Indianapolis, about a three- hour van ride from her home base at Keeneland. OVERVIEW the Field for This Year's Kentucky Derby Is
OVERVIEW The field for this year’s Kentucky Derby is unusually strong. The winners of all of the major prep races---- Arkansas, Florida, California, Kentucky, New York, Louisiana and Dubai---were dominant. Two key angles this year: two horses, including race favorite Justify, are trying to break the “Curse of Apollo,” named after the last horse to win the Derby without having raced as a two-year old. The last time it happened was 1882! The other theme is the dominance by big time trainers. Four of the most renowned trainers in the world, Bob Baffert, Todd Pletcher, Chad Brown and Aidan O’Brien train all of the major contenders and it would be a surprise if a horse from somebody else’s barn won. Rain is in the forecast for Friday but Saturday is expected to be dry so track conditions are not likely to be a factor. I’ll assess every horse in the field, in post-position order. THE FIELD #1 FIRENZE FIRE - The post position is awful and the horse is too slow. #2 FREE DROP BILLY - Lousy post position but the horse is training well and could come from off the pace for a lesser placing. #3 PROMISES FULFILLED - He’s the likely pacesetter and may be on the lead for most of the race. But the pace is likely to be torrid and I doubt he’ll last. #4 FLAMEAWAY - Not likely but not impossible. He should be close to the pace and ran a good second to Good Magic in the Blue Grass at Keeneland. -

MSHAWISH MSHAWISH – STALLION SYNOPSIS “A remarkably tough, adaptable and consistent performer, Mshawish has captured seven black-type events, scoring on dirt and turf, and on three different continents, his triumphs including the Donn Handicap (gr. I) and Gulfstream Park Handicap (gr. I). Mshawish is a son of Medaglia d’Oro, who is one of the world’s most important sires, and who has also achieved the unique feat of siring Champion Two-Year-Olds in the U.S., Europe and Australia. On the distaff side Mshawish comes from the immediate family of Champion U.S. Two-Year-Old Filly Halfbridled.” Mshawish is a product of the hugely successful cross of Medaglia d’Oro and his sons over Mr. Prospector line mares, one that has produced no less than 29 stakes winners. The dam of Mshawish is inbred to Mr. Prospector, but these crosses will be in the fifth and sixth generation of his foals, and we can also note that there are already more than 30 grade one winners who carrying three cross of Mr. Prospector, so reintroducing this strain should not cause concern. -
