Box 5689, Addis Ababa, ETHIOPIA SUMMARY The paper reviews information on the White Fulani cattle under the headings: origin, classification, distribution, population statistics, ecological settings, utility, husbandry practices, physical characteristics, special genetic characteristics, adaptive attributes and performance characteristics. It was concluded that the breed is economically important for several local communities in many West and Central African countries. The population of the breed is substantial. However, introgression from exotic cattle breeds as well as interbreeding with local breeds represent the major threat to the breed. The review identified a lack of programmes to develop the breed as being inimical to its long-term existence. RESUME L'article repasse l'information sur la race White Fulani du point de vue: origine, classement, distribution, statistique de population, contexte écologique, utilité, pratiques de conduites, caractéristiques physiques, caractéristiques génétiques spéciales, adaptabilité, et performances. On conclu que la race est importante du point de vue économique pour diverses communautés rurales dans la plupart des régions orientales et centrale de l'Afrique. Le nombre total de cette race est important; cependant, l'introduction de races exotiques, ainsi que le croisement avec des races locales représente le risque le plus important pour cette race. Cet article souligne également le fait que le manque de programmes de développement à long terme représente un risque important pour la conservation de cette race. -

Consequently, correct identifcation of these potential pathogens is crucial to estimate the level of expo- sition, the risk and the detrimental impact on livestock and the human population. Results: Conventional PCR with generic primers was used to identify groups of tick-borne pathogens in cattle breeds from northern Cameroon. The overall prevalence in 1260 blood samples was 89.1%, with 993 (78.8%) positive for Theileria/Babesia spp., 959 (76.1%) for Anaplasma/Ehrlichia spp., 225 (17.9%) for Borrelia spp., and 180 (14.3%) for Rickettsia spp. Sanger sequencing of a subset of positively-tested samples revealed the presence of Theileria mutans (92.2%, 130/141), T. velifera (16.3%, 23/141), Anaplasma centrale (10.9%, 15/137), A. marginale (30.7%, 42/137), A. platys (51.1%, 70/137), Anaplasma sp. ‘Hadesa’ (10.9%, 15/137), Ehrlichia ruminantium (0.7%, 1/137), E. canis (0.7%, 1/137), Borrelia theileri (91.3%, 42/46), Rickettsia africae (59.4%, 19/32) and R. felis (12.5%, 4/32). A high level of both intra- and inter-generic co-infections (76.0%) was observed. -

NFI Institute of Agricultural Research for Development, Bamenda Cameroon Abstract CATTLE PRODUCTIVITY ON SMALLHOLDER FARMS IN THE WESTERN HIGHLANDS OF CAMEROON. A study of the traditional cattle production systems in the Western Highlands of Cameroon was carried out between August 1994 and September 1997. Fifty two cows selected from 14 farms in 4 locations were monitored monthly. Data were collected on calf and dam weight, dam's body condition, milk offtake and forage quality. Reproductive performance was monitored by measuring progesterone levels in milk sampled weekly. Crude protein content of grazed pastures rose from 12.5% in July to 14.5% in October and declined steadily to reach 4.5% in February. With such a decline in forage quality during the dry season, cows are unable to obtain their nutrient needs, thus productivity was low. Body condition score declined from medium (5.6) at calving to upper low (4.5) 4 months after the initiation of milk offtake. Body weight of cows decreased by nearly 14% during the same period. The interval between calving to first progesterone rise, calving to conception, and inter-calving intervals were 172 ± 116, 185 ± 106 and 448 ± 86 days, respectively. Milk offtake averaged 1.29 ± 0.44 kg/cow/day for a lactation length of 10.5 months. A significant effect of season was detected in milk offtake (P <0.001), body condition score (P O.05), body weight of cows (P <0.05), intervals from calving to first progesterone rise (P <0.05), calving to conception (P <0.05) and inter-calving interval (P <0.01). -

chap03_livestock_25 7-02-2008 13:17 Pagina 86 M’Bororo cattle , THE NIGER The M’Bororo zebu is only present in the ) region on a temporary basis, because of N'GUIGMI transhumance, and is found mainly in the ( central-western and southwestern regions of Chad. This animal – whose local names include Bororo, red Peul zebu, red Fulani, Djafoun, Rahadji, Fellata and Foulata – is finely built but very large, measuring between 140 and 150 cm at the withers. The dewlap hangs low and the horns are carried high, in a lyre shape, reaching between 0.8 and 1.2 m in length. The skin is a uniform red colour. At birth, both male and female calves weigh between 15 and 20 kg and, under natural conditions, the adult weight ranges from 400 to 500 kg for males and 350 to 450 kg for females. Weights vary widely according to the seasons and to the amount and quality of fodder available. The M’Bororo zebu is a hardy breed that adapts well to different climatic conditions. In Chad, it can be found in the hot dry regions as well as in the wet regions with trypanosomiasis. The animal is the major capital resource of many herders in the region. M’Bororo cattle have a high value as a form of capital accumulation. Taking mortality into account, and usage to supply household needs, these herds have an annual capital growth of between 3 and 5 percent. -

E-mail: [email protected] *Corresponding author Abstract This article investigated the role of cattle attributes in buyers’ choices and hedonic pricing in Benin. Cross-sectional data were collected on 347 market cattle transactions using the revealed preference method. Both statistical tests and hedonic price models were performed. The results show that the most important criteria guiding cattle buyers’ choices were the health status of the cattle, and their body condition, price, age and category. The most important cattle attributes determining the price were the live weight, the subspecies and the breed, the origin, the category and the coat colour. In contrast to the zebu subspecies, taurine subspecies and related breeds had significantly positive hedonic prices. -
