RESEARCH. REQUESTED The following letter was received from: Mr. Mike A. McCoy District Fisheries Officer Marine Resources Division Ponape, Eastern Caroline Islands U. S. Trust Territory of the Pacific 96941 The Marine Resources Division of the Trust Territory government in Ponape would look favorably on proposals from qualified persons wishing to do inter-disciplinary research in a number of socio-economic areas affecting the subsistence and commerical fisheries of the district. While the department cannot offer cash stipends·or salaries; other forms of support including on-island transportation, office facilities and secretarial services could be made available to persons working on projects deemed of significant value to the district. At present, the projects which would be given consideration would include those which dealt with artisanal and subsistence fi~heries such as presently exist in the district; consumption patterns and preferences for seafood and seafood products in the district; the potential effects of increased commer~ialization of certain segments of previously subsistence fisheres; and other similar topics. The department realizes the importance of research into areas dealing with past and future utilization of the ·renewable marine resources of the district, but does not have sufficient funds to undertake comprehensive studies on all facets of their uti lization. In conjunction with the Community College of Micronesia the Marine Resources department might be able to provide some measure of direction and support for such projects from qualified applicants. Proposals should be directed to either the Director of the Community College or the District Fisheries Specialist for their consideration. · -2- SPC SPONSORS LAGOON SURVEY IN GILBERT ISLANDS A Team of experts sponsored by the South Pacific Commission and led by Dr. Robert E. Johannes of the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology is to spend four weeks in the Gilbert Islands undertaking a survey of Tarawa lagoon. Funds were made available for the survey by the South Pacific Commission under its grant-in-aid scheme, following a request for assistance from the Gilbert Islands Government. The team departed from Honolulu September 23rd. Tarawa lagoon is becoming increasingly polluted because of the progressive closure of sea-water passages by causeways constructed to improve communications between the various islets of Tarawa atoll. Also, human wastes and domestic rubbish are entering the lagoon because of the increasing density of population on South Tarawa. The pol lution of the lagoon may discourage.·entry of certain species of fish which are essen- . tial to the local diet. Also, it could lead to outbreaks of disease, including fish poisoning. The team wi 11 : 1. Assess the present extent of pollution in the lagoon 2. Investi~ate the effects of the in-flow of water from the ocean 3. Advise on methods of reducing pollution, and 4. Draw up plans for a long-term monitoring.system to warn against any increases in pollution levels.
