The Fish Fauna of Brokopondo Reservoir, Suriname, During 40 Years of Impoundment

Ouboter*** and Shamita Sahdew*** We investigated long-term changes in the fish fauna of Brokopondo Reservoir, Suriname, the first large reservoir (1560 km2) that was created in tropical rainforest. Before closure of the dam in 1964, the fish fauna of Suriname River had 172 species, high diversity and high evenness. The riverine fauna was dominated by small-sized species, but no single species was dominant in numbers. Large catfishes were dominant in biomass. Species were evenly distributed over riverine habitats: rapids, tributaries and main channel. Four years after closure of the dam, only 62 fish species were collected from Brokopondo Reservoir, but the composition of the fish fauna was still changing. The reservoir fauna in 1978 was very similar to the reservoir fauna in 2005, indicating that a stable equilibrium had been reached 14 years after closure of the dam. The reservoir fauna had 41 species, low diversity and low evenness. Most species of Suriname River and its tributaries with strict habitat requirements did not survive in Brokopondo Reservoir. Fish community structure was different among four habitats of Brokopondo Reservoir. The open- water habitat (10 species) was dominated by the piscivores Serrasalmus rhombeus, Acestrorhynchus microlepis and Cichla ocellaris and their prey Bryconops melanurus and two Hemiodus species. B. melanurus fed on zooplankton, Culicinae pupae and terrestrial invertebrates. Hemiodus fed on fine flocculent detritus, demonstrating that the detritus-based food chain was still important in late stages of reservoir development. -

Floristic and ecological data on the lianes of the Brokopondo district, Surinam J. van Donselaar Instituut voor Systematische Plantkunde, Utrecht. SUMMARY Lianes, defined as woody climbers and (facultatively) straggling shrubs, were collected in an area of about 1900 square kilometres of the Brokopondo District, in the interior of Surinam. Ten different habitats were distinguished only one of which was intensively sampled, viz. the so-called “high forest”, the most luxuriant climax vegetation type in the area. A total of 132 species were distinguished, 80 of which could be determined with certainty and 15 nearly so. Among the identified species one was new (described since as Dicranostyies guianensis A. Mennega, Conv.), and 5 were new records for Surinam, viz. Sparattanthelium aruakorum Tutin (Hern.), Abuta obovata Diels, Abuta splendidaKruk. et Mold., and Sciadotenia sagotiana (Eichl.) Diels (all Menisp.), and Mimosa micracantha Benth. (Mim.). The distribution of the species over the 10 habitat types is shown, and the ecology of some of them is discussed more in detail. 1. INTRODUCTION During his various sojourns in Surinam since 1963 the author, together with his Surinamian assistants, collected lianes in the Brokopondo District, in the interior of the country. This collecting was possible due to the Biological Bro- kopondo Research Project, but without forming part of it. The collections made A. were primarily to provide Dr. W. M. 136 The small nation of Suriname, on the northern rim of South America, has become a favorite destination for traveling birders. This summary of recent discoveries will aid the visitor in knowing what to look for. Additions to The Birds of Suriname THOMAS H. DAVIS In 1968 Francois Haverschmidt published Birds of Surinam (now spelled "Suriname"). This book presented a modern account of a little-known avifauna, graced with numerous, lavish illustrations by Paul Barruel. In 1968 a 'modern' account of the Suriname avifauna detailed mainly the coastal and savanna habitats within 60 kilometers of the coast, and what I regard as "transitional forest" along the Afobaka highway from Phedra and Brokopondo south to Afobaka Lake. This transitional forest contains elements of savanna and interior forest types, as well as coastal species inland along the broader rivers. At that time only scattered specimen reports existed for much of the interior, and virtually nothing from elevations exceeding 200 meters. In 1968, 600 species were listed for Suriname. Birds of Surinam attracted much attention from amateur and professional ornithologists. Notable among the latter was Gerlof Mees; his widespread investigations and subsequent publications form the backbone of my summary below. The avifauna of the Sipaliwini savanna on the Brazilian border, the Voltzberg - Raleigh Falls area, and Brownsberg at 500m elevation are now reasonably well known. Yet there are still fertile fields for investigation - higher elevations ( exceeding 1000m at Tafelberg), Brazilian border forests, and the offshore shelf waters. This report presents a summary of 56 species additions to Haverschmidt's work. These include published and unpublished specimen and sight records through 1979 segregated into two categories. -

The collaboration of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) was crucial in all stages, including the development of the idea of a socio-economic impact assessment, the provision of financial and logistical support and commenting the draft report. This mission took place thanks to the drive and conviction of Minister Michel Felisi of the Ministry of Regional Development and Ms. Inyang Ebong-Harstrup, Coordinator of the United Nations System in Suriname. The mission comprised: Rudolf Buitelaar, Coordinator; Michael Hendrickson, ECLAC, Macroeconomist/Agriculture; Asha Kambon, ECLAC, Social Sector/Sustainable Livelihoods; Erik Blommestein, ECLAC Consultant, Tourism/Environment and Salomon Emanuels, local UNDP consultant. Many people have made crucial inputs both in the training session that took place in September and the final field mission of November 2006. Chief among them was Mr. Anches from the Ministry of Regional Development as coordinator of the counterpart support. We acknowledge the critical contributions of the whole counterpart team that the Ministry of Regional Development managed to assemble. -

It summarizes the Project description, results of baseline social and environmental studies that were completed, impact and cumulative effects assessments, and Environmental and Social Monitoring and Management Plans (ESMMP) for the Project. Project Introduction Newmont presently operates the Merian gold mine in eastern Suriname. Newmont is now considering the development of Sabajo, approximately 30 kilometers (km) to the west of Merian and 100 km south of Paramaribo, as an extension to the Merian operation (Figure ES-1). Newmont holds a Right of Exploration where the Project is located. Figure ES-1 Project Location -2- Newmont engaged a consulting team led by Golder Associates Inc. (Golder) to Introduction to the ESIA complete this ESIA. The team includes specialist local Surinamese consultants Process who completed the majority of baseline studies. The Project is being proposed within a legal and institutional framework that has been established in part through agreements reached for the Merian mine.
