Dagmar’s News We are pleased to announce that Dagmar is to be the next Bishop of Huntingdon in the Diocese of Ely. Please pray for Dagmar as she transitions to her new role and prepares to leave Hexham. We will say farewell on Sunday 7th July. Her consecration will take place before in St Paul’s Cathedral on 3rd July at 11am. Help in the Refectory Café? We are looking for two volunteers, one to help alternate Thursdays, and the other every Friday, both over the busy lunchtime period, helping to wash up, clear tables and to be generally on hand supporting the Café staff. Staff ● The Dales Quartet A number of people who attended the Sunday 10am service in February half term asked, “who is the cellist playing with Jill and Martin Hughes?” Some members of the congregation knew that it was Laurence their son. Laurence is bringing his string quartet back to Hexham Abbey on Saturday 1st June to give a concert in the Great Hall at 7.30pm. Laurence was born in Hexham, was Head Chorister in the Abbey Choir under John Green and received the brilliant musical training and experience of singing which is offered to all Abbey young musicians. He left QEHS for Congregation Congregation Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester for the sixth form ● and then progressed to King’s College, University of London to read Theology and Philosophy. He is currently lay chaplain of the Grammar School at Leeds where he also teaches Theology and Philosophy. Tickets are available from the Abbey Gift Shop at £12 or on the door at the concert. Children and young people can enjoy the concert for free! Please spread the word and come and enjoy some great music in the perfect surroundings of the Great Hall. Lunchtime Live Concerts 2019 Come along and enjoy some varied and inspiring music performances on Volunteers Volunteers occasional Tuesday lunchtimes this summer in the Abbey. Free admission with Hexham Abbey News retiring collection and all proceeds will go to the upkeep of the Abbey. The first Lunchtime Live concert is on Tuesday 28th May from 1pm until 1.40pm and the organ will be played by Tamsin Brown. Quiz Night - With Shared Supper The Social Team at the Abbey have organised a Quiz Night with shared supper on Friday 7th June at 7pm in the Great Hall. Tickets are now available to buy from the Parish Office for £3 per adult or £1.50 per concession. Your ticket will confirm whether you will be asked to bring a sweet or savoury dish for sharing. It promises to be a fun evening, so come along with your friends and test your general knowledge. NEWS Prayers Answered! With thanks to all the team who provide Parish Breakfast and Elevenses, especially new members Roy, Irene, Gail and John, we are pleased to announce that our rotas are complete again. All the team enjoy providing for you - so please stay on - or come early to Parish Breakfast before the 10am service in the Allendale Room. Great News - Have You Got Your Ticket Yet? Many of you will be aware that Lynn Caudwell, member of the Abbey congregation, is undertaking ordination training. She is due to be made a Deacon in Newcastle Cathedral on Saturday 29th June at 11am, and will become a Curate at St Andrew's in Corbridge. Please remember her in your prayers and support her by attending the Cathedral Service. This is ticketed, please contact the Parish Office to book a ticket. Rogation Sunday beckons on 26th May! Dust off those hiking boots or trainers and join the our traditional walk around the boundaries of the parish, with lunch stop at the Dipton Mill Inn, immediately after the 10am service. We have a special guest preacher at 10am, as we welcome the Canon Chancellor of Durham Cathedral, Charlie Allen, who is heading up the regional churches' pilgrimage initiative. It will be good to hear from her what is involved and how Hexham Abbey can be involved. Christian Aid 2019 Bags with envelopes are available in South Transept. Please can all envelopes be returned by 22nd May? There are still some gaps if anyone can help! Leaving Collection - Goodbye to Toni Toni Bush will be leaving her role as Education Manager at the end of May and we will officially say farewell to her at the 10am service on Sunday 19th May. We will be recognising all of her hard work and dedication to her role and have started a collection. If you would like to contribute towards a gift for Toni, then please see Esther in the Parish Office. Online Donations - Did you Know? Monday Afternoon House Group We are trialling a new Discipleship in Daily Life course to start the term. Meetings this week (13th May) and next week (20th May) are at Rye Terrace, and then we alternate between Rye Terrace and Riding Mill. Do join us if you wish. Friday Afternoon House Group Having completed the Lent course we are returning to our study of the Epistle to the Hebrews. We are a friendly and supportive group, meeting weekly at one of three venues in Hexham and would offer a warm welcome to any new members. Contact Elizabeth on 601142. UPCOMING EVENTS Organ Recitals, 18th May St John Lee are having three organ recitals by local organists. The first recital will be by Michael Haynes, Director of Music at Hexham Abbey on Saturday 18th May 2019 starting at 6pm. Entrance is £5 which includes light refreshments. Living Well in Tynedale, 18th May The Living Well in Tynedale event is being held in Hexham Abbey between 1pm and 3pm on Saturday 18th May. The date was chosen as it is on the cusp between Mental Health Awareness Week and Dementia Action Week. The aim is to help people find out more about the activities, support and volunteering opportunities in our area, and is designed to be a fun afternoon that can help optimise physical and mental health. Local organisations, groups and clubs have been invited to host a stand at this event to highlight and share what can be offered. This is a free event with thirty stands, live music & refreshments. Silver Screen Showing, 30th May The May showing of Roman Holiday (1953) stars Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn, shot in and around Rome. It is preserved in the U.S Library of Congress as being ‘culturally, historically and aesthetically significant’. Come along to the North Transept at 2.30pm on Thursday 30th May for a relaxed afternoon of tea or coffee and cake. It is free but donations are gratefully accepted. Now Is The Time to Worship, 1st June An evening of Christian celebration by Churches Together in the Tyne Valley and entitled God on the Move, with guest speaker Rev. Paul Revill. Doors open at 6pm for a 6.30pm start. The evening is expected to finish at 8pm. Hexhamshire Garden Trail, 23rd June People across the Shire will welcome visitors on Sunday 23rd June to the 2019 Hexhamshire Garden Trail. The trail starts at St Helen’s Whitley Chapel where you can obtain tickets and a trail map. There is also a prize quiz with prizes of afternoon tea at the Lord Crewe at Blanchland and a family day out at Otterburn ranges. Each garden has questions so the more you visit the better your chance of winning. The gardens will first open at 11am, homemade soup and a roll will be available at the school for lunch, courtesy of the Hexhamshire WI. As you tour round you will also be able to see wonderful vistas before stopping off for afternoon tea at one of the gardens. In addition there will be plant and cake stalls, yarn bombing and willow sculpture and croquet on the lawn. It should be a wonderful family event.
