The near-natural habitat types are savannah (sav), lower montane forest (flm), Ocotea forest (foc), Podocarpus forest (fpo), Erica forest (fer) and Helichrysum scrub (hel). The disturbed habitat types are maize field (mai), Chagga homegarden (hom), shaded coffee plantation (cof), unshaded coffee plantation (sun), grassland (gra), disturbed Ocotea forest (fod) and disturbed Podocarpus forest (fpd). Each habitat type is represented by five replicate plots, except for the unshaded coffee plantation, which is covered by four replicate plots. One of these five (respectively four) plots per habitat type is used as ‘focal plot’ (yellow squares) for especially labor-intensive studies like the artificial fruits experiment presented in this study. Oromia is the largest National Regional State of Ethiopia. Here we present the first comprehensive checklist of its birds. A total of 804 bird species has been recorded, 601 of them confirmed (443) or assumed (158) to be breeding birds. At least 561 are all-year residents (and 31 more potentially so), at least 73 are Afrotropical migrants and visitors (and 44 more potentially so), and 184 are Palaearctic migrants and visitors (and eight more potentially so). Three species are endemic to Oromia, 18 to Ethiopia and 43 to the Horn of Africa. 170 Oromia bird species are biome restricted: 57 to the Afrotropical Highlands biome, 95 to the Somali-Masai biome, and 18 to the Sudan-Guinea Savanna biome. -

Side-striped Jackal/Greater Galago/Roan Antelope/Blotched Genet Trip Summary This was our first ever fully comprehensive tour to Malawi and was quite simply a fantastic experience in all respects. For starters, many of the accommodations are of excellent quality and are also situated in prime birding locations with a large number of the area’s major birding targets found in close proximity. The food is generally very good and the stores and lodges are for the most part stocked with decent beer and a fair selection of South African wine. However, it is the habitat diversity that is largely what makes Malawi so good from a birding point of view. Even though it is a small country, this good variety of habitat, and infrastructure that allows access to these key zones, insures that the list of specials is long and attractive. Our tour was extremely successful in locating the vast majority of the region’s most wanted birds and highlights included Red-winged Francolin, White-backed Night Heron, African Cuckoo-Hawk, Western Banded Snake -

Box 332, Bolinas, California 94924 The Oriental Turtle-Dove (Streptopelia orientalis), also known as the Rufous Turtle-Dove (e.g., Cramp 1985) or the Eastern Turtle-Dove (Goodwin 1983), is a widespread polytypic Asian species that breeds from the Ural Mountains to the Pacific coast of the Russian Far East, including Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. It also breeds in Japan (south to the Ryukyu Islands) and on Taiwan. It breeds south to west-central Asia, the Indian subcontinent, Myanmar, and northern Indochina. In the Russian Far East its breeding range extends east to the Sea of Okhotsk and as far north as 64° N in the Lena River valley (Wilson and Korovin 2003). Although the species is resident in parts of its range, it vacates the entire northern portion of the breeding range (e.g., all of Russia) in the fall (Wilson and Korovin 2003). These migratory birds winter mostly within the range of residency farther south. Over large portions of northern, central, and western China, the species is only a passage migrant (see range map in Wilson and Korovin 2003). We report here on two records from California, both in the late fall and early winter: 29 October 1988 at Furnace Creek Ranch, Death Valley National Park, Inyo County, and 9–31 December 2002 at Bolinas, Marin County (California Bird Records Com- mittee 2007); archived photos and a videotape of the latter bird are stored with the record (2003-036) in the files of the California Bird Records Committee (CBRC) at the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology in Camarillo, California. -

Abstract A survey of ectoparasites of the Laughing Dove (Streptopelia senegalensis Linnaeus, 1766) was carried out in Zaria, Nigeria, to determine the prevalence, intensity and mean intensity of infestation. A total of 382 (231 males and 151 females) doves trapped from different locations in Zaria, Nigeria, were examined through plumage brushing. Eighty-eight (23.0%) of the birds were infested by the following six species of ectoparasites: lice – 32 (8.4%) Menopon gallinae Linnaeus, 1758, 37 (9.7%) Columbicola columbae Linnaeus, 1758, and 18(4.7%) Goniodes sp.; flies – 19 (5.0%) Pseudolynchia canariensis Macquart, 1840; ticks – 12 (3.1%) Argas persicus Oken, 1818; and mite: 1 (0.23%) Dermanyssus gallinae (Degeer, 1778). The frequency of single infestations (59 – 15.4%), was higher than that of double (27 – 7.1%) and triple (2 – 0.52%) infestations, though the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The males had a higher prevalence (55 – 23.8%) than the females (33 – 21.9%). However, this difference was also not significant (p > 0.05). Ectoparasites were collected from the birds through out the year, with highest prevalence (60.0%) in November. -

We flew from Delhi to Guwahati, located in the far northeast of India. A long drive later through the hectic traffic of this enjoyable country, we arrived at our lodge in the evening. (Photo by tour participant Robert Warren) We enjoyed three full days of the wildlife and avifauna spectacles of the famous Kaziranga National Park. This park is one of the last easily accessible places to find the endangered Indian One-horned Rhinoceros together with a healthy population of Asian Elephant and Asiatic Wild Buffalo. We saw plenty individuals of all species; the rhino especially made an impression on all of us. It is such an impressive piece of evolution, a serious armored “tank”! On two mornings we loved the elephant rides provided by the park; on the back of these attractive animals we came very close to the rhinos. The fertile flood plains of the park consist of alluvial silts, exposed sandbars, and riverine flood-formed lakes called Beels. This open habitat is not only good for mammals but definitely a true gem for some great birds. Interesting but common birds included Bar-headed Goose, Red Junglefowl, Woolly-necked Stork, and Lesser Adjutant, while the endangered Greater Adjutant and Black-necked Stork were good hits in the stork section. -

Part 2 in a series about the European Turtle Dove 1970-1990 Since the nineties the European Turtle Dove (Streptopelia t. turtur) has been de- clining in numbers in its original habitat. Status and conservation of In 1994 BirdLife International published the reasons why the European Turtle Dove has been decreasing since the 1970’s, namely due to the intensification THE EUROPEAN of agricultural practices on the breed- ing grounds, especially in Western Eu- rope. Secondly due to the hunting of European Turtle Doves on the wintering TURTLE DOVE grounds and during the spring migra- tion. Thirdly due to the droughts on the (Streptopelia turtur) wintering grounds in Africa (BirdLife compilation and photos by Charles van de Kerkhof International, 1994). Apart from the aforementioned specifi- cation of the decline of European Turtle Doves BirdLife International’s Birds in Europe: their conservation status from 1994 also provided solutions, namely to maintain and improve both the breed- ing and wintering grounds, especially reducing the use of agricultural herbi- cides. Secondly the hunting in spring should stop completely and the hunt- ing on the wintering grounds should be better regulated. The reason why little was known about the status of European Turtle Doves in the nineties was that nearly no re- search had been undertaken. Only in Great Britain and France was research conducted on European Turtle Doves.
