Paul Language of Instruction: English UO Credits: 6 Contact Hours: 60 Total Hours of Student Engagement (THSE) in all course activities: 180 LONDON, ENGLAND COURSE DESCRIPTION London’s vibrant cultural life and history provide the setting for an immersive three-week course exploring music performed throughout this world capitol. From the serenity of Evensong to the raucousness of a West End musical, students will engage with a wide variety of musical genres throughout the course. Students will learn to listen critically and analytically to music originating from a wide variety of historical eras and born from diverse circumstances. An interdisciplinary approach will encourage students to consider music in relation to the art and culture surrounding its creation. Designed to challenge music majors and non-majors, students will attend concerts, visit historically significant venues, and participate in highly interactive class sessions. Conference Location EUROPHRAS 2017 will take place at the Strand Palace Hotel, in the heart of London’s West End. Many of the city's major tourist attractions, shops, businesses, government buildings and entertainment venues, including West End theatres, the eclectic eateries and bars of Soho, and numerous galleries and museums, are concentrated in the area. The venue is also within walking distance of Covent Garden, an area associated with the former fruit-and-vegetable market in the central square (now a popular shopping and tourist destination) and with the Royal Opera House, which is also commonly referred to as Covent Garden. The Embankment, a path which runs along the River Thames, is also a short walk from the Strand, and the bustling Southbank area is located across the water. STRAND PALACE HOTEL The Strand Palace Hotel is one of the most iconic buildings in London, the history of which starts more than a century ago. With Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs throughout, The Strand Palace Hotel would now be unrecognisable to guests from the Edwardian era. But links with the past still remain: a few Art Deco touches are visible inside and outside the building; guests from the war years still return to relive their memories. Outside, The Strand remains a buzzing focal point of West End life, just as it was in 1909. The hotel was built after Exeter Hall was demolished in 1907. It opened in 1909 and was refurbished in the Art Deco style during the 1930s, but has now been modernised. The twenties saw the Strand Palace Hotel expand, taking over the neighbouring Haxell’s Hotel.

Carnaby, London W1, launches Christmas with decorations co- designed by The Rolling Stones Thousands of shoppers and Rolling Stone fans were in the world famous Carnaby Street, London, W1 on Thursday 8 November to see the launch of the Carnaby Christmas decorations, co-designed by The Rolling Stones. The Christmas decorations consist of huge 3D spheres suspended throughout Carnaby Street containing gold and silver vinyl records emblazoned with the bands iconic artwork and album covers. The Carnaby arches are also dressed with The Stones iconic tongue logo. The outdoor installations tell a visual story from the band’s creation in the 1960s to the present day, and will be in place until 6 January 2013. DJ and presenter Goldierocks Dj’d and rocked the crowds with a live countdown. A high energy dance flash mob by the dancers from D Inc dance company performed to Jumping Jack Flash. Shoppers were also treated to a free limited edition Carnaby Rolling Stones canvas bag. Shoppers queued to get in to the Rolling Stones pop up shop at 10 Carnaby Street to get their hands on limited edition apparel and prints plus exclusive box sets. Carnaby is world famous for its music heritage as well as its fashion history and this year’s Christmas designs are a very special project with the greatest rock’n’roll band in the world. The Rolling Stones / Carnaby relationship started in the 1960s. The band would often frequent the shops in Carnaby Street, and just round the corner in Broadwick Street they rehearsed for their first live shows.
