Today marks the fortieth meeting and a glance at the names of the thirty-nine f.t.d. title winners on the “ Records” page takes one through a fairly comprehensive slice of the story of British Hill Climbing in the sixties. In the beginning there v/as Tony Lanfranchi with a Climax engmed Elva Mk. 6 taking the first ever Harewood f.t.d. with a time of 51.61 — this afternoon it could be Nick Williamson, Mike MacDowell, David Good, Peter Blankstone, Roy Lane or David Hepworth with, if the weatherman is kind, a time of below 40 seconds for the 1,060 yards. It is interesting to see how the record has come down over the years. Seven months after that first meeting Keith Schellenberg sliced almost two seconds off Lanfranchi’s time and the same September Peter Boshier-Jones trimmed off just over three seconds to 46.72. This was at our first "National” and, of course, the first meeting after the original tar and chipping surface had been replaced by tarmac. In May 64 Tony Marsh took off another I j seconds and the same September Peter Westbury took the Ferguson P.99 up in 44.45 a figure which withstood all assault until September 1967 when Tony Marsh trimmed this to 42.94. A year later Harewood’s own Peter Lawson became the first Yorkshireman to hold the Harewood crown since 1963 with a time of 42.86 which he improved to 41.43 the same September winning his R .A .C . Hill Climb Championship title. This stood until April this year when first David Hepworth, then Peter Blankstone and finally Sir Nick W illiamson all improved upon the time in consecutive runs so that we start this after noon with W illiamson’s name as holder of the Harewood record, although the Pride of Brighouse — David Hepworth did equal N ick’s time in June. So it is in the Shell/R.A.C. British Hill Climb Championship struggle also, David is the man in possesion of the title whilst Nick is leading the field for this year. As explained further in this programme Linda Thornton, Secretary of the Meeting, resting the 1970 Championship battle is more open than for after the exertions of signing-on competitors at the many years and this afternoon could be very instru "Montague Burton" Meeting. mental in deciding the new holder. Finally we have to thank Shell for their interest in It is fitting that we welcome to Harewood today and support of Hill Climbing in Britain. Last year they someone who is almost to be regarded as the father came along and sponsored the British Hill Climb of British Hill Climbing as we know it, Raymond Mays. 500 Owners Association MOTOR SPORT Magazine Clippings - 1940’s Issued: 4th March 2015 Notes on 500 and 500-related references This paper is an attempt to record every single 500-related reference from the entire run of the magazine. It includes articles, references in event reports, For Sale advertisements. It also tries to include details that are relevant to the context of the 500 movement, such as clubs, organisation of the sport, and the development of venues. The only area where it is limited is when covering the careers of 500 drivers before or after their time in the movement Status: All magazines in the time period have been fully catalogued. Notes On : • Magazine issues with no entry & light shading are not available for cataloguing. We would be grateful if you could volunteer to add any missing issues. • Every effort has been made to find references, including references in general and classified advertisements. However, it is quite possible that some may have been missed whether because they are very obscure, apparently irrelevant, or just human error. • Transcription Style: • Text has been transcribed verbatim (including spelling errors), with only modern grammar substituted for contractions (e.g. “S Moss” for “S.Moss”; “ftd” for f.t.d.) • “(sic)” notation may have been used where relevant in text, and is a transcriber’s note rather than the source text. • For longer articles, only pieces of note are transcribed. The ellipsis (“… “) before a sentence indicates that text deemed irrelevant has been skipped (which could run to many paragraphs, e.g. reports of other classes in an event report).

2017 Pendle & DMC : Scammonden Dam Hillclimb Photo Courtesy of Brian Taylor Volume 8 : Issue 9 : September 2017 : Maurice Ellison Chairman's Chat My last event was a great day on the Pendragon Stages on the Warcop ranges, what a cracking venue, and while having a break for stage changes I noted a couple of stickers on my clipboard for the Lombard RAC Rally in 1979 and 1980 and thought, good grief that’s nearly 40 years ago. In those near 40 years the event has changed out of all recognition from when we spent 5 days and nights travelling all around the country to this years event which is effectively over 3 days, with just a couple of stages in the dark for the big boys, spread over just half of Wales plus a short trip into Cheshire for a Mickey Mouse stage. Looking at the latest schedule I don’t envy the marshals on the Aberhirnant and Dyfnant stages as each stage is run twice, first thing in the morning and last thing in the evening so I guess they will be on duty for the best part of 17-18 hours. Well at least the MSA appears to have recognised the extraordinary dedication in the August Marshals Newsletter as I quote “We are looking at how best to provide support for everyone who is making the event run on these particular stages. And while we don't have an answer just yet, it is one of our top priorities”. Far be it for me to say but this sort of scheduling is completely unjustified and with a bit of thought could have been avoided.
