Bishop Mark is presently the Area Bishop of Shrewsbury in the Diocese of Lich¿eld. Before moving to Shropshire in 2009, he served in this diocese for seven years as our Diocesan Missioner and as a Residentiary Canon of Exeter Cathedral, having previously been Team Rector of the Langport Area parishes in Somerset, and before that a curate and then incumbent in Cheshire. Mark is married to the Reverend Prebendary Mandy Rylands, who during their time in Devon was the Exeter Diocesan Director of Ordinands, Bishop’s Adviser for Women in Ministry, and a Prebendary of Exeter Cathedral. More recently, Mandy has served as Lich¿eld Diocesan Of¿cer for Self-Supporting Ministry and in various deanery and parish roles. Mark and Mandy have two adult children—Frances, who is presently doing postdoctoral research in Dublin and planning her wedding to Freddie at Buckfastleigh in the summer; and Sam, who is married to Lily and currently training for ordained ministry at Trinity College, Bristol. Since leaving Devon, Mark and Mandy have retained a family home on the edge of Dartmoor. Having served as a Bishop for the past nine years, Mark has discerned a call back to parish life for this latest stage of his ministry, and he and Mandy look forward to their return to a part of the country which they know and love very well. Mark will be full- time Priest-in-Charge of the Ashburton & Moorland Parishes, and in addition the Bishop of Exeter has appointed him an honorary Assistant Bishop in the diocese; in that capacity he will be able to give occasional help to the bishops of the diocese in case of need. One of Mark’s abiding passions is cricket, and his return to Devon is good news for our diocesan cricket team! Mark and Mandy will move to Ashburton Rectory during the summer. Subject to the completion of all legalities, Mark’s licensing by the Bishop of Exeter will take place on the evening of Tuesday, July 31st at a service in St Andrew’s, Ashburton to which all are invited. Your prayers are asked for Mark, Mandy and their family as they prepare for this new chapter in their life and their ministries, and for the parishes of the Ashburton & Moorland Team as we look forward to their arrival among us. Although we are very fortunate in having so many people to help us at the moment to take services and assist in pastoral ministry, there has been almost no resource to help us move forward as a Team and to engage more actively with our communities. That’s been pretty much on hold. So we now know that there is an end in sight – July 31st. And we can start planning for a new chapter in our bene¿ce. This will begin in earnest with Mark’s licensing, and then the Widecombe Bene¿ce Service will follow on August 5th so we can all be together to enjoy our ¿rst experience of Mark’s ministry. For me the excitement is about the possibilities that will be opening up – the energy that will come into our thinking and doing. It’s amazing that we will have someone of such experience working with us, a dynamic new leader of the ministry team. But the temptation will be to sit back and relax while he tells us what to do, and perhaps hope that he does it for us? I guess this was what Jesus’ disciples hoped for when they ¿rst got caught up in the excitement of being called by Jesus to “Follow me”. Jesus had all the answers, he was amazing with the crowds, he was charismatic and compelling, and he would change the world. But then the disciples learnt it wouldn’t last, that Jesus only had a short time to be with them – in the event just three years – to teach them all that they needed to enable them to carry on by themselves. contd.     Postbridge September 2019 This settlement profile has been prepared by Dartmoor National Park Authority to provide an overview of key information and issues for the settlement. It has been prepared in consultation with Parish/Town Councils and will be updated as necessary. Settlement Profile: Postbridge 1 Introduction Postbridge lies on the road between Two Bridges and Moretonhampstead, 5 miles east of Princetown. It commands a central geographical location within Dartmoor National Park. It is an important destination for visitors to Dartmoor. It hosts a National Park Visitor Centre, a large car park with room for coaches, and is the base for walks into moorland and forest and for viewing the well-known clapper bridge. There is also a youth hostel operating in nearby Bellever. The village name refers to the pack horse bridge (formed of large dimension clapper stones) over the East Dart River close to the main road. The cottages and inns that grew up around the bridge, along with ancient tenements nearby, came together to form the settlement and community. The turnpike road established in the 1790s, and the granite road bridge that was built in 1792, gave added importance to the settlement. There is a limited range of local services and facilities.     Fresh Expression Pilgrimage From Friday September 4 through to Wednesday September 16, my husband Andy and I made a Fresh Expressions Pilgrimage to England. On our journey we talked to clergy and lay leaders about Fresh Expressions of Church as well as how many traditional Anglican churches are re‐ imaging themselves to bring the Gospel message afresh to those in their parishes and to those who have yet to hear the good news. Following is a brief summary of our travels. This is only a summary so if questions arise please contact us for a more detailed conversation. Note: There are 11 different stories in this document. By Sue Kalbfleisch. Moot: creative and explorative Christian activity in the city The Moot community, lead by Rev’d Ian Mobsby, is located in St. Mary Woolnoth Church, in the heart of London’s financial district. The group meets from 6:30 onward on Sunday evenings beginning with refreshments and then worship begins at 7:00. This area of London is a “ghost town” on Saturdays and Sundays with restaurants and shops being closed, so everyone travels in to Moot. On Sunday evening there were about 25 worshippers at Moot including folk from the area as well as some German youth leaders and a priest from New Zealand. Worship included an adapted Compline service with a time of meditation. Ian joined the participants and Jon Oliver, a pioneer ministry student on a summer placement from Cambridge, led the service. Moot is a safe place for people who have issues in their lives – it is non‐judgmental, inclusive, welcoming, and engaging.

    Dartmoor Accommodation List Lightweight camping is a traditional way of enjoying Dartmoor's remote areas, and if undertaken sensibly is entirely acceptable. Camping in less remote areas, particularly on roadsides, and bad camping practice anywhere, can cause problems of pollution and reduce the enjoyment of others. Under the Dartmoor Commons Act there is a byelaw designed to permit what is harmless, but control what is potentially damaging. It applies to all common land on Dartmoor (i.e. most of the unenclosed moorland), and this should be taken into account. Please ensure that no more than two teams are camped in any wild location to comply with the National Park’s guidance on low impact camping. The National Park also require locations to be separated by at least 100m and be out of sight of roads. Dartmoor National Park camping advice One of the great advantages of coming to Dartmoor is the wide availability of wild and basic campsites excellent for gold level expeditions, providing isolation and solitude key to a successful expedition. The National Park website has an interactive Camping Map showing where you can, and cannot, legally camp wild. It can be found at: http://www.dartmoor.gov.uk/about-us/about-us-maps/new-camping-map We are very lucky on Dartmoor having 50% of the land within the National Park boundary accessible on foot. Some 32,500 hectares is common land which means that on most of this land you are free to wild camp anywhere (subject to local commons byelaws and firing restrictions). On another 7,000 hectares which was opened up in August 2005 under the Countryside and Public Rights of Way Act 2000, camping could be allowed if the landowner gives you permission.
