  • One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and Their Fans
One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and their Fans Annie Lyons TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin December 2020 __________________________________________ Renita Coleman Department of Journalism Supervising Professor __________________________________________ Hannah Lewis Department of Musicology Second Reader 2 ABSTRACT Author: Annie Lyons Title: One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and their Fans Supervising Professors: Renita Coleman, Ph.D. Hannah Lewis, Ph.D. Boy bands have long been disparaged in music journalism settings, largely in part to their close association with hordes of screaming teenage and prepubescent girls. As rock journalism evolved in the 1960s and 1970s, so did two dismissive and misogynistic stereotypes about female fans: groupies and teenyboppers (Coates, 2003). While groupies were scorned in rock circles for their perceived hypersexuality, teenyboppers, who we can consider an umbrella term including boy band fanbases, were defined by a lack of sexuality and viewed as shallow, immature and prone to hysteria, and ridiculed as hall markers of bad taste, despite being driving forces in commercial markets (Ewens, 2020; Sherman, 2020). Similarly, boy bands have been disdained for their perceived femininity and viewed as inauthentic compared to “real” artists— namely, hypermasculine male rock artists. While the boy band genre has evolved and experienced different eras, depictions of both the bands and their fans have stagnated in media, relying on these old stereotypes (Duffett, 2012). This paper aimed to investigate to what extent modern boy bands are portrayed differently from non-boy bands in music journalism through a quantitative content analysis coding articles for certain tropes and themes.

Exploring C lass, Nation, and Xenocentrism in Indonesian Cassette Retail O utlets1 Jeremy Wallach Like their fellow scholars in the humanities and social sciences, many ethnomusicologists over the last decade have grown preoccupied with the question of how expressive forms are used to construct national cultures. Their findings have been consistent for the most part with those of researchers in other fields: namely that social agents manufacture "national" musics by strategically domesticating signs of the global modern and selectively appropriating signs of the subnational local. These two simultaneous processes result in a more or less persuasive but always unstable synthesis, the meanings of which are always subject to contestation.2 Indonesian popular music, of course, provides us with many examples of nationalized hybrid 1 1 am grateful to the Indonesian performers, producers, proprietors, music industry personnel, and fans who helped me with this project. I wish to thank in particular Ahmad Najib, Lala Hamid, Jan N. Djuhana, Edy Singh, Robin Malau, and Harry Roesli for their valuable input and assistance. I received helpful comments on earlier drafts of this essay from Matt Tomlinson, Webb Keane, Carol Muller, Greg Urban, Sandra Barnes, Sharon Wallach, and Benedict Anderson. Their suggestions have greatly improved the final result; the shortcomings that remain are entirely my own. 2 Thomas Turino, "Signs of Imagination, Identity, and Experience: A Peircean Semiotic Theory for Music," Ethnomusicology A3,2 (1999): 221-255. The use of figurative language is making rich the lyric meaning, so the listener can have different interpretation for each lyric depend on the background of the listener or their knowledge. Figurative language according to Perrine (1997: 61), is language using figures of speech that cannot be taken literally. It is used by the poets because they can say what they want to say more vividly and forcefully by figures rather than they say it directly. Figurative language causes a poem becomes more imaginative and it adds the intensity of the poets‟ feeling for poetry to convey their attitude. Not even in the poetry, this can be applied in the song lyric too. 1 2 The benefit of figurative language or speech contains images. The writer or speaker describes something through the use of unusual comparisons, for effect, interest, and to make things clearer.
