In fact, the Illini were the youngest team in the nation in 2017. COACHING STAFF » Illinois has started more true freshmen than any team in the nation (16): DB Tony Adams, RB Ra’Von Head Coach: Lovie Smith (Alma Mater: Tulsa ’80) Bonner, OL Larry Boyd, DB Dawson DeGroot, TE Louis Dorsey, RB Mike Epstein, DL Isaiah Gay, DB Record at Illinois: 5-19 (2 seasons) Nate Hobbs, LB James Knight, OL Vederian Lowe, OL Alex Palczewski, DL Bobby Roundtree, WR Ricky College Record: same Smalling, QB Cam Thomas, DB Bennett Williams and DL Jamal Woods. Prior to Andrew Hayes-Stoker: Wide Receivers this season, the most true freshmen to start at Illinois in a SEASON was nine in 1980. Thad Ward: Running Backs » 14 of Illinois’ 19 offensive touchdowns (73.7 percent) were scored by true freshmen, including 12 of the Paul Williams: Defensive Backs / CB last 14. Freshman touchdowns were scored by Ra’Von Bonner (4), Mike Epstein (4), Louis Dorsey (3), Ricky Smalling (2) and Cam Thomas (1). Robert Wright: Defensive Graduate Assistant • Punching It Out: The Illini forced 17 fumbles on the season to rank second in the nation in forced fumbles per game (1.42), behind only Wyoming (1.69). The total of 17 forced fumbled tied for fouth-most overall, behind SUPPORT STAFF Wyoming (22), Utah State (18) and Texas A&M (18). Director of Football Operations: Tim Knox » Senior DE James Crawford and sophomore S Stanley Green led the way with three forced fumbles each, Director of Player Personnel: James Kirkland ranking 8th and 24th in FBS and 1st and 5th in the Big Ten, respectively. Director of Player Development: Tre Stallings » Stanley Green has six forced fumbles in his 2-year Illini career which is tied for seventh-most in program Head Strength & Conditioning Coach: Joey Boese history (dating back to 1990), and is T-1st in the B1G (Maryland’s Jermaine Carter, Jr.) and T-10th in FBS Head Football Athletic Trainer: Jeremy Busch over the last two seasons. Director of Football Video: Alex Benizzi • All-American Guy: Freshman safety Bennett Williams was named to ESPN.com’s true-freshman All-America Equipment Manager: Trent Chesnut team. His 64 tackles were fifth-most on the team and the second most in the Big Ten by a freshman. Williams also picked off a team-high three passes, broke up two more, and had 1.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. 2017 ILLINOIS SCOREBOARD • Smalling Coming Up Big: True-freshman WR Ricky Smalling made big plays for the Illini.
