In Oregon, we have a long history of protecting reproductive rights and removing barriers to accessing abortion because we know abortion is healthcare. "If SB 8 remains in effect without intervention from courts, any abortion providers who remain operational are facing a crushing wave of lawsuits that they will likely be unable to litigate. This back-door ban presents harm to people facing severe restrictions on important health care protections. "BIPOC communities are most often forced to resort to unsafe abortions due to reproductive healthcare restrictions, a symptom of institutionalized white supremacy and patriarchy. SB 8 once again disproportionately takes away our constitutional right to make decisions about our own bodies as a worst case scenario, and forces those with the resources to travel across state lines for healthcare access as a best case scenario.

August 17, 2021 The Honorable Governor Kate Brown, Governor of Oregon 900 Court St NE Salem, OR 97301 Dear Governor Kate Brown: As Oregon state legislators, many with ties to refugee communities, we are compelled to speak out after seeing the chaotic scenes in Kabul this weekend. We join together to affirm that Afghan families are welcome in Oregon. We are calling for the safe passage for people from Afghanistan who are facing immediate threats to their lives and the lives of their families. What we are facing now is a humanitarian crisis, and we must meet this moment with the urgency it demands. Together, we call on the Biden administration to lift the refugee admission caps and take other emergency humanitarian actions that will save lives at this pivotal time. As a state, we must also take all the necessary steps to be prepared to resettle families when they arrive. Events in Afghanistan echo the departure of the United States from Saigon following the end of the Vietnam War. In 1975, the United States lifted refugee caps to allow more than 125,000 families to resettle in communities across the country. Since then, the United States has admitted more than three million refugees who have resettled in this country. Though refugees and immigrants have faced and continue to face significant barriers, they continue to demonstrate their dedication to serving the public and they add immense value to our communities. They are students, small business owners, neighbors, and community leaders. They are our friends and family. As Oregonians, we welcome vulnerable and displaced families seeking refuge from violence and oppression.

Nearman to Resign Following Criminal Charges SALEM, OR—Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) legislators, including Rep. Khanh Pham, Rep. Ricki Ruiz, Rep. Mark Meek, Rep. Andrea Valderrama, Rep. Andrea Salinas, Rep. Wlnsvey Campos and Sen. Kayse Jama, issue the following statement regarding the criminal charges brought against Rep. Nearman (R-Polk County) announced this past Friday: “As BIPOC members of the legislature, we call on Rep. Nearman to resign. “When Rep. Nearman opened the Oregon State Capitol door to armed, violent white supremacist rioters, he put every single person in the building in danger. Moreover, the beliefs and values espoused by these rioters put our BIPOC legislators and staff in extreme danger, threatening our livelihoods and existence. “The rioters Rep. Nearman let into the building were not shy about their beliefs. The insurrection on December 21, 2020 was led by hate groups, including Patriot Prayer, a known hate and white nationalist group. Prior to entering the building, the rioters spewed racist, xenophobic rhetoric; they held Confederate flags, a symbol of oppression and violence against Black and other communities of color; they peddled unfounded conspiracy theories about our Presidential election, theories that primarily sought to discredit counties with large BIPOC voter turnout. “There is an adage: ‘When someone tells you who they are, believe them.’ Rep. Nearman has shown us who he is several times now, not just when he permitted white supremacist rioters into the building during the COVID emergency order, but throughout his entire political career.

LWVOR Legislative Action is based on advocacy positions formed through studies and member consensus. The League never supports or opposes any candidate or political party. May 4, 2021 To: House Committee On General Government Representative Marty Wilde, Chair Representative Gary Leif, Vice-Chair Representative John Lively, Vice-Chair Representative Andrea Valderrama, Member Representative Jack Zika, Member Email: https://olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2021R1/Testimony/HGG Re: SB 299 Children’s Service Districts- Support The League of Women Voters of Oregon prioritized several issues for the 2021 session, one of them being to “generate adequate revenue for essential services while promoting equitable and progressive tax policy and addressing revenue needs due to COVID-19.” The League supports a tax system that is based on the ability to pay, but that applies a benefits-received principle wherever reasonable and that recognizes the role of social expediency justice and equity. We support SB 299 because it addresses social needs and a provides for a tax method to support them. SB 299 would establish a children’s special district just as we have for water, parks, utilities, and even irrigation and weather modification. This allows a local jurisdiction, county or a portion of a county to propose a ballot measure to the voters with the possibility of imposing a local levy on property taxes that would be used specifically for the purposes of serving children with before and after school programs and/or with summer programs for kids within that jurisdiction.
