Last season the Cardinals posted a 30-21 record which was the fourth 30-win season under Combs. Offensively Jewell led the GLVC with a .326 batting average (school re- cord), hits per game (9.31), doubles per game (1.57), and run’s scored per game (5.96). Three players werer named to the All-GLVC teams including Rachel Potvin, Madi Giles, and Faith Song. Potvin and Song were also named to the All-Region team. Song also received a third team All-America honor. In 2014 Jewell recorded a 29-23 record and finished fourth in the GLVC tournament. 2013 marked the most successful season in program history with a record of 32-15 and 21-6 in the GLVC, which was good enough for second place in the west division. Jewell fin- ished fourth in the GLVC tournament just missing a bid to the NCAA Division II regional tournament. The team set several program records in 2013, including 53 homeruns (1.12 per game), which ranked first in the GLVC and eighth in the nation. With winning streaks of ten and 13 games the team won 24 of its last 28 games. Jewell placed five players on the 2013 All- GLVC First Team. Three were also named to the All-Region team and Rachel Hayden became the first softball player to be named All-America, earning Honorable Mention honors. Under the direction of Coach Combs the program has won 287 games averaging 29 wins a season, has produced 12 Aca- demic All-Americans, 22 HAAC All-Conference Selections including the Conference Freshmen Player of the Year in 2009. Six GLVC First team selections and three All GLVC Second Team selections and one All-GLVC Third Team selection. Six Players have also been name to the NFCA Louisville Slugger All-Region Team. In 2011 Offensive production set new program records with 314 Runs Scored, 488 Hits, 45 Homeruns, 291 RBI, .301 batting avg., and a .962 fielding % while setting the new school record for wins with 38. Over the last three years Jewell has averaged 39 homeruns a season. The 2011 Cardinals pitching staff led the Heart of America Conference in batters struck out 437 (4th in the Country), ERA with 1.84 (19th in the Country) and opponents batting avg. .217 (20th in the Country). In 2009 the Cardinals infield turned 25 double plays which ranked them in the top 10 at all collegiate levels. Defensively, the Cards finished the season with a .953 fielding % including First Basemen Kristen Marshall that led the Nation in fielding percentage (.998) of players with 400 plus chances. Combs has spent the past two summers in Akron, Ohio as he served as the Assistant Field Manager of the Akron Racers. The Racers finished the 2014 regular season 24-24 and for the first time since 2005 played for the league championship v. the USSSA Pride. The success of the 2014 season earned Combs the recognition of the NPF Coaching Staff of the Year honor. The team had five All-NPF selections including the Offensive Player of the Year, Nerissa Myers and Kelley Montalvo who also received the Jenny Finch Award. The Akron Racers are the oldest existing team in the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league. Combs also served seven seasons as the Head Coach of the Glendale High School softball program in Springfield, Mo. He, was hired in 2000 to lead the program in its first season of state-recognized competition. Under Coach Combs the program compiled 108 wins, currently the all-time leader in wins for a softball coach in Springfield Public Schools history and the only coach to amass over 100 victories. In seven seasons the program won Class 4 District Championships in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2005 and was runner-up in 2006 and made back-to-back State Quarterfinal appearances in 2001 and 2002. In three different seasons his teams earned Academic All-Conference and Missouri State High School Athletic Association Out- standing Scholastic Achievement. Combs served as the Glendale H.S. Assistant Baseball Coach for seven years. In the summer of 2003, was named the Glendale American Legion Head Varsity Baseball Coach. He spent three summers leading the program. In the summer of 2006, Combs assisted with the development of the Missouri Baseball Club, an 18-and-under select baseball program based out of Republic, Mo. In 2004, Combs received recognition from the National High School Baseball Coaches Association as District #5 “Grounds Keeper of the Year,” and was a finalist for National Grounds Keeper of the Year through his work on the Glendale High School baseball field. Combs is a native of Commerce, Okla., and a 1993 graduate of Commerce High School. He attended Northeastern A&M College in Miami, Okla., for two years while playing baseball for the Golden Norsemen. Combs graduated from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Okla., in 1998 with a bachelor’s of science degree in physical education and business education. Received his Master’s Degree in Secondary Administration from William Woods University, in Fulton, Mo. He resides in Kansas City, Mo., with his wife Susan and sons Cruze (5) and Brecken (1). His responsibilities on the coaching staff include the development of outfield- ers. Coach Bower also works in softball game day promotions, travel logistics and is the program’s recruiting coordinator, which includes scheduling of official and unofficial visits. He also serves at the Director of Athletic Events and Operations for the Cardinals. For the last 18 years Bower has had the privilege of working with two great organiza- tions in the National Football League (NFL). Providing him a multi-faceted experience in the realm of comprehensive coaching techniques, targeted competitive scouting, prospective player recruitment and logistics.
