WILLIAM JEWELL ATHLETICS DR. DARLENE BAILEY DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Darlene Bailey, Ph.D., a member of the William Jewell College class of 1982, enters her sixth year as Athletic Director at William Jewell College. Bailey comes to William Jewell after serving as the Associate Commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference.

“We are thrilled to have an individual of Dr. Bailey’s caliber to assist us at this pivotal moment in the history of athletics at William Jewell College,” said Wil- liam Jewell president Dr. David Sallee. “Her solid background in sports admin- istration and in the academic arena will serve the institution well as we continue the process of realigning our athletic affiliation from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics to the National Collegiate Athletic Association.”

Bailey managed the NCAA governance process for the Denver-based WAC’s nine member institutions and worked directly with the WAC presidents/chancellors, athletic directors, senior woman administrators and facul- ty representatives on implementation of the conference’s strategic plan. She was also the primary liaison to the WAC’s women’s basketball, volleyball, softball and tennis coaches. She oversaw the championship, compliance, and business operations for the WAC, a process that involved more than 2,500 student athletes.

Prior to being named to the WAC Associate Commissioner’s post in 2006, Bailey served for eight years as Asso- ciate Director of Athletics at Missouri State University in Springfield.

“I am happy to be given the opportunity to return to my alma mater to serve in this important role,” Dr. Bailey said. “The College has a long and rich tradition of achievement, both on the playing field and in the classroom. I look forward to being a part of that tradition on a daily basis. The decision to move to the NCAA is exciting. The mission and goals of Division II are consistent with Jewell’s philosophy regarding the integration of intercol- legiate athletics within the College as a whole. ”

Bailey is currently on several boards and task forces including the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) Committee on Women’s Athletics and the Women’s Basketball Champion- ship Committee. She was named the 2006 Division I-AA National Administrator of the Year by the NACWAA.

Prior to her tenure at Missouri State, Bailey held various positions at Wichita State University, University of Idaho, Eastern Washington University, University of South Alabama, Ohio University and Chaminade University. She has supervised coaches in more than 20 different men’s and women’s sports and has served as the primary budget officer for intercollegiate athletics at two institutions.

Bailey received a master’s degree in Sports Administration and a doctorate in Higher Education Administration, both from Ohio University. She received her B.A. in history in 1982 from William Jewell, where she served as a part-time Sports Information Director. SOFTBALL SUPPORT STAFF

2015 IN REVIEW Although the 2015 William Jewell College softball team completed their fourth 30 win season under head coach Dustin Combs, the season ended with disappointment. The Cardinals failed to qualify for the Great Lakes Valley Conference postseason tournament for the first time since joining the league in 2011. Overall Jew- ell finished with a final record of 30-21 and 16-14 in the GLVC. The Cardinals endured a tough first month of the season due to inclement weather and multiple cancel- lations. After going 3-1 at the Eight-State Classic in Bentonville, Ark. the team went 21 consecutive days with- out seeing competition, having 12 games cancelled. Despite the long layoff, the Cardinals went 4-0 when they finally did return to the field as they swept double-headers from Upper Iowa and Lincoln University. The GLVC season got off to a slow start as Jewell went 1-3 with a split at Bellarmine and two losses to Southern Indiana. Splits with Indianapolis and Saint Joseph’s, followed by a sweep of Maryville, and two losses to UMSL brought the Cards to 17-10 overall and 5-7 in the GLVC. Another rough stretch of games from March 31-April 8 saw the Cardinals drop six of eight contests including four GLVC losses to Rockhurst, Missouri S&T, and Drury. A dominant sweep of Quicy University helped Jewell begin to turn the year around and make one final push towards the GLVC Tournament. Despite finishing 7-3 over the final stretch of conference play, the midsea- son deficit was too much to overcome as the Cards finished 16-14 in the league, and just short of a ninth con- secutive appearance at a postseason conference tournament. Like many teams, the Cardinals played their best softball on their home field as they went 18-8 at the Spratt Sports Complex, On the road Jewell career went just 9-12 along with 3-1 on neutral dirt. In non-confer- ence play the team went 14-7 with sweeps over Upper Iowa, Lincoln, and Northwest Missouri State, along with splits with Emporia State, Newman, Missouri Southern, and Lindenwood. As a team the Cardinals led the GLVC with a .326 average and was second with 475 total hits. Jewell was also third in slugging percentage (.472), on base percentage (.382), runs scored (281), RBI (269), at bats (1455), and total bases (687). On average, Jewell totaled over nine hits per game, which led the league, along with 1.57 doubles and 28.53 at bats per contest. Senior Faith Song, capped off her elustrious William Jewell by leading the team in batting average (sev- enth in the GLVC), home runs, and was third in RBI, as she started all 51 games. For her work she was named first team All-GLVC, first team Daktronics All-Midwest Region, and third team Daktronics All-America. She also received the prestigious Meredith Laraman Landry Award for the William Jewell College Female Athlete of the Year. Two other players received postseason honors as senior centerfielder Rachel Potvin, who led the GLVC with 69 hits, along with a team-high 44 runs scored, and ten stolen bases while hitting .366, was named second team All-GLVC. Meanwhile, freshman Madi Giles emerged as a mid-season bloomer and went on to earn third team All-GLVC, after hitting .388 and set the new Jewell record with 20 doubles. Established in 1978 with a commitment to the purposes, fundamen- tal policies and basic principles of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) has grown to embody the vision established by the founders of the organization and has melded athletic and academic excellence for 35 years.

The GLVC, which at one point over the past decade grew to 17 members and was the largest athletic conference in the country in any division, has fully embraced NCAA Division II. Although formed and developed as one of the nation’s premier NCAA Division II basketball conferences, the GLVC now sponsors 20 championship sports, which includes the addition of football in 2012 and men’s and women’s swimming and diving in 2013-14. JIM NAUMOVICH Commissioner The conference headquarters are located in downtown Indianapolis, one of the many major Midwest media markets in which the league maintains a presence. The GLVC has schools in Milwaukee/Northern Illinois (UW-Parkside), Chicago (Lewis), Indianapolis (Indianapolis), Louisville (Bellarmine), Evansville (Southern Indiana), Springfield, Ill. (Illinois Springfield), Springfield, Mo. (Drury), Kansas City (Rockhurst, William Jewell) and St. Louis (Maryville, McKendree, Missouri-St. Louis).
