Both readings seem to stress that prophets must rely entirely on God. So too in our own lives, we sometimes find our- selves in the midst of tasks for which we feel completely unprepared. We can feel overwhelmed or in over our heads. But if we believe that these are tasks to which God has called us and for which God has sent us, then we ought also to believe that God has equipped us with what we need to accomplish them. Faith is the only provision that we need. Of course, faith is not as easily attained as food or a sack or money. You can’t buy it in a store or borrow it from a friend, but must receive it as a gift from God. We should have confidence, however, that, as the Letter to the Ephesians says, we who have been chosen in Christ to exist for the praise of God’s glory have also been provided with what we need to fulfill that calling: “every spiritual blessing in the heavens.” This is given to us in our baptism and we can rely on it fully.
