“How do we know what Jesus looked like?” They wanted to know “What happened to Veronica’s veil that had Jesus’ image on it?” Kim’s 3rd,4th&5th Grade Answer: There is no reference to the veil of Veronica in the . The apocryphal book of ‘Acts of Pilate’ identi- fies Veronica as the woman with hemorrhage who was healed by touching Jesus in Luke 8:43-48. According to tra- dition, Veronica met Jesus along the way to Calvary and she wiped the blood and sweat off Jesus’ face with her veil and Jesus’ image was imprinted on the cloth. Veronica later travelled to to present the veil to Roman emperor . It was believed that the veil was able to quench thirst, cure blindness and even raise the dead. Actual recording of the veil began in 1199 by two pilgrims visiting Rome, Gerald de Barre and Gervase of Tilbury. Pope Innocent III publicly displayed the veil in 1207. Many artists reproduced the image of the veil during this peri- od. The original veil kind of disappeared in the 17th century. What we have today is copies of the veil that survived. It is believed that the original veil never left St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. There are at least six images resembling the original veil. I was lucky to see the one kept in Hofburg palace in Vienna, Austria in 2007. Jewish tradition prohibited creation of images or portraits of humans, animals, anything on earth or heaven [Exodus 20:4]. So we don’t have any image of Jesus until 300 AD. When began to spread across the Non-Jewish world [Rome, Greece], images of Jesus began to be created according to the artists’ imagination. A mural painting of Jesus with long hair and beard was discovered in the Catacomb of Commodilla, in Rome, a late 4th century origin.
