The Benefice of St John’s Hartley Wintney with Elvetham, St Mary’s Winchfield and All Saints’ Dogmersfield

The Institution as Vicar of

The Rev’d Angie Smith by

The Rt Rev’d David Williams

& Induction by The Ven Richard Brand in

St John’s Church, Hartley Wintney 9th December at 7.30pm

This page would usually contain a biography of the person being instituted and installed, but I think most of you reading this will have heard enough stories about me, scattered through my preaching to stitch together a biography yourselves! If there are any gaps you could refer to the excellent article in Contact magazine by Irene Airton in November 2017 or ask a member of Revive or Naomi’s Watch who might remember a few stories I told them or disks I chose for my desert island.

Instead, I thought I would just explain my musical choices for the service this evening because I think they say everything you need to know about me:

I love the seasons in nature and the Christian calendar. The autumn falling of the seed to the ground and its springing up from the dark earth illustrates for us death and resurrection, supremely of Jesus, but also for so many things in our own lives, things we cling onto but have to allow to die for new life to come in their place. The Christian calendar ensures that we journey through the darkness and into the light, that we mourn and grieve and also rejoice and sing. We are in Advent now, a beginning, a waiting time, full of promise and hope. And so for this beginning, I chose an Advent hymn to start the service tonight.

‘Hills of the north, rejoice’ describes the compass points of the world. It reminds me that we are part of a worldwide church and evokes the beauty of our planet home. One of my parents’ gifts to me through some early years in Africa was a curiosity and ease in other cultures. Though I love to travel and return, being with Jesus is where I feel truly at home.

It was when I was 10 years old I realised for the first time that Jesus had died for me. God spoke through the words of a West End musical and I knew it was real and personal and that I needed to follow him. Isaac Watt’s words perfectly describe the conversion of my heart as I survey the wondrous cross. It is both terrifying and also consoling, full of unimaginable pain and yet demonstrates the depth of his love. How else could I respond but to ask the Holy Spirit’s help each day to make my life cruciform?

And so, I find myself here, in obedience to God’s word, knowing only the next step and the next season. My daily task is to watch for signs of the Kingdom and pray for it to come here. It is only to carry the yoke Jesus gives me to bear and, as Paul says to the Corinthian church, ‘to know nothing with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.’

The Processional Hymn (Sung by Claudia Birney) Hills of the North, Rejoice

Hills of the North, rejoice, river and mountain-spring, Hark to the advent voice; valley and lowland, sing. Christ comes in righteousness and love, he brings salvation from above.

Isles of the Southern seas, sing to the listening earth, Carry on every breeze hope of a world’s new birth: In Christ shall all be made anew, his word is sure, his promise true.

Lands of the East, arise, he is your brightest morn, Greet him with joyous eyes, praise shall his path adorn: Your seers have longed to know their Lord; to you he comes, the final word.

Shores of the utmost West, lands of the setting sun, Welcome the heavenly guest in whom the dawn has come. He brings a never-ending light who triumphed o’er our darkest night.

3

Shout, as you journey home, songs be in every mouth, Lo, from the North they come, from East and West and South: In Jesus all shall find their rest, in him the universe be blest.

The Call to Worship Bishop Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you; All and also with you.

Bishop Brothers and sisters, we have come together to worship Almighty God, who has called us into the fellowship of his universal Church, to Institute the Reverend Angie Smith as the Vicar of this parish. God has given us the gifts of word and sacrament and entrusted us with the work of mission and service. Let us rededicate ourselves to build up the Church of Christ here and throughout the world, and pray for grace to be instruments of God's love, in the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Collect Bishop Heavenly Father, we praise you for the continuing witness of your Church in this place, for all who have been raised up in times past to minister here, and for your servant Angie now called by you to serve as Vicar. Guide and strengthen all your faithful people, that we may give ourselves in love and service to one another and to you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Bishop I thank you for this Presentation and I will gladly admit her.

Angie stands before the Bishop. Bishop Angie, I greet you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and welcome you. Do you believe that God has called you to serve in this parish as Vicar?

Angie I do so believe.

The Bishop addresses the people of the parish.

Bishop People of God, is it your will that Angie should serve with you in this Benefice? All It is.

Bishop Will you support and uphold her in this ministry? All With the help of God, we will.

The Bishop then invites the congregation to pray, using these or other words:

The care of the people of a benefice is a solemn trust. I therefore call upon you now to pray to God for Angie for this parish and for yourselves.

Silence is kept Sit or kneel

Music: Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire

The Bishop stands and faces the congregation.

The Declaration and Oaths Angie stands before the Bishop. Sit

Bishop In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, I shall now institute Angela Smith, Clerk in Holy Orders, to the cure of souls in this parish, but first let the Archdeacon ensure that the Oaths be taken and the Declaration of Assent be made and subscribed, according to law.

Archdeacon Angie, the is part of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church worshipping the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It professes the faith uniquely revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds, which faith the Church is called upon to proclaim afresh in each generation. Led by the Holy Spirit, it has borne witness to Christian truth in its historic formularies, the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion, the Book of Common Prayer and the Ordering of Bishops, Priests and Deacons.

In the declaration that you are about to make will you affirm your loyalty to this inheritance of faith as your inspiration and guidance under God in bringing the grace and truth of Christ to this generation and making him known to those in your care?

Angie then makes the Declaration of Assent.

I, Angela Smith, do so affirm and accordingly declare my belief in the faith which is revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic creeds and to which the historic formularies of the Church of England bear witness; and in public prayer and administration of the sacraments, I will use only the forms of service which are authorised or allowed by Canon.

Turning to face the congregation, Angie, holding a Bible in her hand, makes the Oath of Allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen.

I, Angela Smith, do swear by Almighty God that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, her heirs and successors, according to Law: so help me God.

Turning to face the Archdeacon, Angie makes the Oath of Canonical Obedience.

I, Angela Smith, do swear by Almighty God that I will pay true and canonical obedience to the Lord and his successors in all things lawful and honest: so help me God.

The Archdeacon and Angie sign the legal documents. 6

The Institution Angie kneels before the Bishop. Taking the Deed of Institution in her hands the Bishop reads the Deed of Institution and then gives it to Angie, saying:

Angie, receive this Cure of Souls which is both mine and yours; in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Angie answers: Amen.

The Bishop stands and blesses Angie saying: God give you the spirit of holy discipline, of faithfulness, and of love for all his people; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always. All Amen.

The Induction Stand

The Bishop hands the Mandate of Induction to the Archdeacon, and says:

Archdeacon Richard, by this Mandate I authorise you to induct Angela Smith into this church and benefice, and thereby provide her with the means to carry out her ministry here.

A video plays of the church wardens of All Saints’ and St Mary’s with Angie at the door and stall of the churches

The Churchwardens and the Archdeacon lead Angie to the church door. The Archdeacon lays Angie’s hand on the door handle, and says:

By the authority of the Bishop, I, Richard Brand, Archdeacon of Winchester, induct you, Angela Smith, into the real and actual possession of the churches of the Benefice of St John’s Hartley Wintney with Elvetham, St Mary’s Winchfield and All Saints’ Dogmersfield with all the rights and responsibilities belonging to them.

The Churchwardens present the keys of the churches to Angie saying:

Angie, receive these keys in token of the responsibility which we share; and may the Lord preserve your going out and your coming in, now and always.

The procession moves to the belfry, Angie tolls the church bell as a sign of the start of her ministry in the parish. The procession then returns to the chancel step. The Archdeacon leads Angie to her stall and says: 7

Angie I install you as Vicar of this Benefice. May God the Holy Trinity make you strong in faith and love, defend you on every side, and guide you in the ways of truth and peace. All Amen.

Angie stands with the Bishop facing the congregation.

Bishop People of this Benefice, I present to you Angie as your new Vicar, and invite you to greet her and her family in the name of Christ. I commend her to your love and prayers. All We welcome you! May the Lord bless you and make you a blessing among us.

Re-dedication of the People of God Stand Area Dean Brothers and sisters in Christ, as fellow servants we share in the task of proclaiming the Gospel, celebrating the Sacraments, making new Christians, building up each other in the life of faith and caring for all, especially those in need. Let us commit ourselves afresh to the ministry to which God calls us.

During the following hymn people of this Benefice will bring to their new vicar symbols of ministry, which she will place on the altar. A jug of water for Baptism; a Bible to proclaim the message of the Gospel; a Prayer Book to unite God’s children in prayer and fellowship; Olive Oil for forgiveness and healing; and Bread and Wine for Holy Communion.

The symbols of ministry are presented during the following hymn.

Angie Eternal God All the light of the minds that know thee, the joy of the hearts that love thee, and the strength of the wills that serve thee. 8

The Bishop says: Almighty God, who has given you the will to undertake this ministry together, give you also grace and strength to perform it; in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All Amen.

Confirmation The Liturgy of Initiation: The candidates come forward and the Bishop asks them: Have you been baptised in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit? Candidates: I have.

Are you ready with your own mouth and from your own heart to affirm your faith in Jesus Christ? I am.

The Bishop says to the congregation: People of God, will you welcome these candidates and uphold them in their life in Christ? All: With the help of God, we will.

The Bishop says to the candidates: In baptism God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life in him. Therefore, I ask:

Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God? Candidates: I reject them.

Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil? I renounce them. Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour? I repent of them. Do you turn to Christ as Saviour? I turn to Christ. Do you submit to Christ as Lord? I submit to Christ. Do you come to Christ, the way, the truth and the life? I come to Christ. May God, who has given you the desire to follow Christ, give you strength to follow in the Way. Amen. 9 The Profession of Faith: Please stand as the Bishop addresses the congregation: Brothers and sisters, I ask you to profess, together with these candidates, the faith of the Church.

Do you believe and trust in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe and trust in his Son, Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Confirmation:

Bishop: Our help is in the name of the Lord, All: who has made heaven and earth. Bishop: Blessed be the name of the Lord, now and for ever. All: Amen.

The Bishop extends his hands towards the candidates and says: Almighty and ever living God, you have given these your servants new birth in baptism by water and the Spirit and have forgiven them all their sins. Let your Holy Spirit rest upon them; the Spirit of wisdom and understanding; the Spirit of counsel and inward strength; the Spirit of knowledge and true godliness; and let their delight be in the fear of the Lord. Amen.

The Bishop addresses each candidate by name. N, God has called you by name and made you his own.

He then lays his hands on the head of each, saying: Bishop: Confirm, O Lord, your servant with your Holy Spirit. All: Amen. 10

Once all have been confirmed, the Bishop says: Defend, O Lord, these your servants with your heavenly grace, that they may continue yours for ever, and daily increase in your Holy Spirit more and more, until they come to your everlasting kingdom. Amen.

The Peace Stand Bishop We are all one in Christ Jesus. We belong to him through faith, heirs of the promise of the Spirit of peace.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. All And also with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

The Bishop exchanges a sign of peace with Angie, the candidates and their families and together they greet members of the congregation.

The Prayers of Intercession

Sit or kneel

Angie Let us pray to God through Christ who is our light and life.

Response: Amen, come Lord Jesus

As our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name; your kingdom come; your will be done; on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

11

Angie makes any necessary announcements and invites the people to join with her when she presides at the Holy Communion at each church in her care.

Hymn

Forth in thy name, O Lord I go

Forth in thy name, O Lord, I go, My daily labour to pursue; Thee, only thee, resolved to know, In all I think or speak or do.

The task thy wisdom hath assigned O let me cheerfully fulfil; In all my works thy presence find, And prove thy good and perfect will.

Thee may I set at my right hand, Whose eyes my inmost substance see, And labour on at thy command, And offer all my works to thee.

Give me to bear thy easy yoke, And every moment watch and pray, And still to things eternal look, And hasten to thy glorious day;

For thee delightfully employ Whate’er thy bounteous grace hath given, And run my course with even joy, And closely walk with thee to heaven.

At the back of the church there will be a retiring collection. This collection will be split between the Bishop’s Ordination Candidates' Fund as is customary at Installation services, and the ’s Companion links, as is customary at Confirmation services. Both are areas of mission close to Angie’s heart. The Diocese of Winchester is privileged to have Companion Links with the Anglican provinces of Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Uganda, Myanmar and Chile. Learning alongside our sisters and brothers in Christ in different cultures and contexts we find mutual encouragement and challenge to live the mission of Jesus and make a difference in God’s world. The donations will be used to strengthen our engagement in world mission through these Companion Links. For example, as a Diocese we have pledged to provide £30,000 over three years to improve the stipend levels and hence the well-being of clergy and their families in Myanmar. Your donations are very much appreciated, and will enable us to support the plans our Companion Links and the Church in this country has for growing the Church and bringing God’s generous love and life to all people. Donations are welcome as cash in envelopes or by contactless giving on the ‘Goodplate’. Thank you for your generosity.
