Elvin Charles Rose (who married Camilla Viola Johnson) was the son of Charles Leonard Rose, and grandson of John M. Rose and Nancy (Baldwin) Rose, and great-grandson of Sirland/Sherland Rose. (One generation was missing in the mentioned item.) Our thanks to Jane Quade for the correction.     Newsletter No. 4, July 2016 Dear Diploma Alumna/us Greetings from London where the mood is very sombre following the result of the EU referendum. It is very hard for those of us who voted to remain in the EU to see the country turning its back on our neighbours and allies and the larger European project. We will have to work harder to maintain connections and contacts. Since the last newsletter in May 2015, another group of ten students has graduated and we welcome them to the Diploma Alumni Group. This brings the number of people who have been awarded the Diploma since 1963 to over 500 (including those who have since died). But this has also been a year of losses. I am sorry to report the death in Japan on November 9, 2015, of Tetsuko Abe Am.S.Dipl ’67, at the age of 82. In addition, two professors who were involved with the Diploma program Daniel Aaron on the steps of Tyler Annex, in its early years have passed away. Smith College, Daniel Aaron died on April 30, 2016, aged 103. He taught May 1999 at Smith, where he was the Mary Augusta Jordan Professor of English, for thirty years from 1939. Having received one of the first doctorates in American Civilization from Harvard in 1943, Dan was among the group of faculty who introduced a pioneering American Studies undergraduate program at Smith, and then led the committee (of which Peter Rose was a junior member) that inaugurated the Diploma in American Studies in 1962. Members of the Diploma classes from the 1960s, such as Lien Guidon Am.S.Dipl ’65, recall with gratitude the role he played in recruiting them to the program.

    Eve Blau Pedagogy and Politics: Making Place and Learning from Las Vegas In the late 1960s the Yale School of Art and Architecture was one of the key sites at which the trajectories of political activism and Postmodern critique intersected, generating a cultural landscape and political subtext for the cultural radicalism that followed in their wake. At Yale that collision generated a series of projects, the most influential of which was the studio / seminar Learning from Las Vegas, or Form Analysis as Design Research, taught by Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, and Steven Izenour in the fall of 1968. But there were many others. After Yale pres- ident Kingman Brewster brought in Charles Moore to chair the Department of Architecture in 1965, architecture students became increasingly involved in urban research, experiments with film, video, and communications technology, “intermedia” installations, new methods and materials of construction (includ- ing foam and inflatable structures), and building projects in remote and impoverished parts of rural Appalachia, all of which held the promise of new directions for the discipline. 1 This con- text is critical for understanding both the milieu in which Learn- ing from Las Vegas took shape and the currents that shifted the 1 Charles W. Organized by the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), this travelling exhibition examines the physical and social space of the contemporary city, as seen by some of today's most innovative architects, urban designers, and planners, including Diana Balmori, Andres Duany, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, Michael Sorkin, Diana Agrest and Mario Gandelsonas, Robert Mangurian and Mary-Ann Ray, Hani Rashid and Lise Anne Couture, Alex Krieger, Pierre-Luc Dumas, Peter Rose, Jacques Rousseau and Melvin Charney. Through plans, drawings, models, and photographs, the exhibition focuses on projects embodying a wide range of social, cultural, economic, political, technological, and ecological concerns, while examining planning and urban design in North American cities such as Boston, New Haven, St. Louis, Des Moines, and Montréal, as well as the Swiss city of Esslingen. The projects included in the exhibition are divided into three thematic sections highlighting fundamental issues of contemporary urban design and planning: Transportation Corridors as Urban Fabrics: Creation and Reclamation; New Neighbourhoods in Urban and Exurban Contexts; and Rethinking the Master Plan. A Fresh Approach Over the past ten years, the trend in urban design has shifted from the global planning approach exemplified by the urban master plans of the 1950s and 1960s to a sector-based approach favouring gradual change rather than the rebuilding of cities.
