We encourage submissions from members of one to one and a half pages on your Rose family. These submissions should be on generations closer to the present day descendants - perhaps parents, grand- parents, or even remembered great-grandparents. These are not intended to be genealogical in nature but focused on the personalties, occupations, remembrances of holidays, etc. We all enjoy these personalized accounts. Correction: In RFB September 2012 page 5410 under “Descendants of John Rose (Roosa) of Broome County, New York, there is a correction in the generations. Elvin Charles Rose (who married Camilla Viola Johnson) was the son of Charles Leonard Rose, and grandson of John M. Rose and Nancy (Baldwin) Rose, and great-grandson of Sirland/Sherland Rose. (One generation was missing in the mentioned item.) Our thanks to Jane Quade for the correction. Linda Olsen writes: A Rose relative emailed me and pointed out the picture of Timothy Harris Rose, my great grandfather, his children and house that he built says on the front cover in the caption beneath the photo: Hampton, Franklin County, Ohio. It should be Hampton, Franklin County, Iowa. Just thought you may want to mention the error if you already haven’t caught it. Many of you emailed after our last issue, indicating your preference that we work towards putting the issues online in a members’ corner. Some of you for ariousv reasons cannot pick up yours online. We will work towards making an online members’ corner available but want to assure those who cannot access their copy that way, we will make a printed version available that will be mailed to you. More details as we work on these plans. We hope that many of you are planning on attending family reunions of Roses this summer. If so, please take a photo or two and send them to us for publishing. Please add the names of those in the photo, and when and where the reunion took place. Also, for those who may have missed it in the last issue, our address has changed. It is now: 761 Villa Teresa Way, San Jose, CA 95123. Our phone number and email remains the same. (See inside of front page of this issue.) We know many of you are working with new material that appears online. So many good things are available - the federal land patents, the 1940 census, etc. Our only word of “caution” would be in using the online posted family trees. Many are excellent, but many are so full of errors they combine three and four different families with no relationship between them. Family Trees on the web are good to use for clues, but should always be substantiated. Please do have a great summer!

Bedford County, Pennsylvania Rose branch

The Bedford County, Pennsylvania Roses have a very dedicated member of the Rose Association who has spent years chronicling this family. He and his wife Karin, also a member, have made trips to Bedford County and met many of the descedants there. Above: Bob shares a photo of his own branch of this family. Bob tells us that the above picture was taken about 1956 and shows four generations of Rose’s. Left to right are Maj. Luther Irvin Rose who was born in 1881 in Cumberland Valley Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, to George W. and Hannah E. (McFerren) Rose and was the youngest in a family of six boys, Next is Robert I. Rose (our member), born in Seattle, Washington, Luther’s grandson and Luther’s great- grandson, Enrico D. Rose, born in Seattle, Washington, far right is Maj. Irvin Hugh Rose Luther’s son born in Sitka, Alaska. Bob has been doing the Rose Family genealogy since he retired in 1985. He did not know where his Grandfather came from and wanted to find his roots. This has grown into a very sizable tree with a lot of help from many of the Rose’s still in the Bedford area. (Ed. note: Those interested in this family can contact Bob at [email protected]).

ROBERT ROSE OF WETHERSFIELD ADDITIONAL DATA

The following addition should be noted for Christine Rose’s Robert Rose of Wethersfield and Branford, Con- necticut, published 1983. We received an email from Bill Carr at [email protected] on 9/28/2010 who points out that Donald Lines Jacobus, in 1969 (Register, 123:88f) had the elder Samuel Harrington marrying Hannah Barnes who he contended was Hannah Linsley widow of John Barnes. If the younger Samuel had been born 1682, it would be unlikely that he married in 1698 (Jacobus and Branford VR have the Samuel Harrington/Hannah Barnes marriage 27 July 1693 vice 1698). Samuel senior died 1719: Deacon Samuel died 1769 in 82d yeaer which would have him born about 1679. The one head-scratcher is that there was a Samuel junior who died 1729; I can’t work out who he was. [From: Bill Carr, Town of Malta, Saratoga County, NY. Turea Grice of [email protected] tells us that she traces Armetta Rose “Mattie” who was born 6 January 1875 (from Bible). She married David Madison Smith on February 24, 1895 by Rev. Dow Collins. David was born June 19, 1865 (same Bible). Armetta was daughter of a Stephen Rose and Margaret (--? --).Turea thinks Armetta was born in Kansas. Armetta’s chil- dren were: Ada born 1896, Augusta born 1898, and Charles. The 1880 census of Bourbon County, Kansas, lists this family: Armentha is aged 9 with a Smith as step-daughter. Turea also sent some Bible record pho- tocopies which give the above dates.

ROSE, HENRY M. Michigan newspaper man and recognition at Washington. Mr. Rose entered upon his duties as Chief Clerk of the Senate April 1st, 1900. Dennis E. Alward having been Reading Clerk of the House for several years, both being newspaper men. Mr. Rose’s father was Rev. Henry A. Rose, a Baptist minister, who was descended from the Rose family of and Rhode Island. His mother, Zaida A. Martin, was a descendant of John Martin of Massachusetts. The son was born in Hornellsville, N.Y., March 16th, 1868. The family located in St. Johns, Mich., in 1865, where Henry M. enjoyed the advantages of the public schools for the next ten years. In 1875 he took a preparatory course at the Fenton Seminary and in the fall of 1876 entered the Baptist College in Ka- lamazoo. His eyesight becoming impaired, he left college in the junior year and was for a time clerk in a store at Hasty, Gratiot county, and also taught a district school. In 1879 he bought a small job printing outfit and soon after joined forces with Otis Fuller in the publication of the Clinton Republication at St. Johnsons. Selling out his interest in 1860 he purchased the Palladium in Benton Harbor, which he managed for nearly four years. In September, 1864, he became a reporter on the Morning Telegram at Grand Rapids and five months later became its city editor, so continuing until 1887, when he accepted a like position on the Evening Leader, which he held for three yeaers and thereafter was assistant managing editor of the Grand Rapids Democrat for a year. Coming to Detroit, he was state editor of the Detroit Journal for a year, at the end of which time he returned to Grand Rapids. During the legislative sessions of 1887 and 1889 he was engrossing clerk of the Hosue of Representatives at Lansing. Mr. Rose was quite actively connected with Republican politics in Grand Rapids and Kent county during his residence there and was chairman of the Republican county committee during one campaign. His experience as a newspaper worker and in his clerical capacity at Lansing gave him a wider acquaintance in the state and he can probably call as many of the political workers by name as anyone in the state. [The account continues with more information on his career]. Mr. Rose is a member of the Masonic fraternity, of the Knights of Pythias, and of the Michican (Republican) Club. It is said of him that he “loves his friends,” and while it is not presumed that he has any enemies, yet, if he has, no doubt in obedience to the Golden Rule, he loved them also. He married Miss Gertrude Miles, daughter of John Miles of Niles, Oct. 7, 1860. They have one son, Willis S. M. [The photocopy we have is very poor and thus the photo did not reproduce well.]

NOTE: Henry M. Rose was a descendant of Dr. Peter Rose born probably before 1777. He had a wife, whose maiden name may have been Samms. They had among their children a son Jesse Rose born in 1797 who married Sarah Taylor. The latter had a son (Rev.) Henry Arnold born 31 Dec. 1825, Jersey, Steuben County, New York, who died 5 January 1910, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This son married 3 June 1854, Zaida Arminda Martin and were parents of Henry M. Rose, the sub- ject of this sketch. There should be a number of male Rose descendants of Dr. Peter Rose who are in direct line and bear the surname of Rose. DNA testing puts Dr. Rose in Group A which includes the Robert Rose of Wethersfield, Connecticut group. We believe Dr. Rose to be Peter6, Samuel5, Daniel4, 3, 2, Robert1.

Rose Allen and Woodson Counties, Kansas

From: L. Wallace Duncan and Chas. F. Scott, History of Allen and Woodson Counties, Kansas: embellished with portraits of well known people of these counties, with biographies of our representative citizens, cuts of public buildings and a map of each county (Iola, Kans.: Iola Registers, Printers and Binders, 1901): 285-286.

JOSEPH P. ROSE, of Elm township, Allen County, was almost a pioneer to Woodson County, Kansas. He homesteaded a tract of land there, in section eight of Liberty township, and remained a citizen of Woodson till 1895 when he became a citizen of Allen. His farm is the northeast quarter of section 19, town 25, range 19, and in early days it was the Zike property. Mr. Rose was born at Kingston, Ontario, October 30, 1847. In 1853 his father, Stephen R. Rose, left Canada and located at Rockford, Illinois. The latter was a hotel man at Kingston, Canada and followed railroad and carpenter work in Rockford, Illinois. He was married to Elizabeth Adget who died in Rockford, while he died in Fredonia, Kansas, in 1897 at the age of eighty-seven years. Their children are: Sarah J., wife of Lorenzo Bissell, of Winnebago County, Illinois; D. W. Rose, of Detroit, Michigan; Annie, wife of Fred L. Horton, of Chicago, Illinois; Joseph P., our subject, and Cyrus Rose, of the Indian Territory. The Roses were originally from York State. Our subject's father was born in the Empire State and migrated to Canada in early life. In 1866 he came onto the prairies of Kansas and settled in the county of Woodson. J. P. Rose began life as a newsboy. He carried the News and Times in DuBuque, Iowa, and later worked in the lead mines at that place. With the exception of the year 1886 he has resided in Kansas, Woodson and Allen Counties. He spent the year 1886 in Pomona, California, where he was toll-keeper in a mill. But he had lived too long in Kansas to be content with a new place, so he came back to Woodson County and took up farming, where he left off, and is today one of the well known citizens of Elm township, Allen County. In January, 1881, Mr. Rose was married to Emma Crabb, a daughter of Henderson Crabb, who came to Kansas in 1866 and was once the proprietor of the Pennsylvania Hotel in Iola. His wife was Mary Beach, who resides in Pomona, California. Mr. and Mrs. Rose's children are: Albert R., who died in 1897 at the age of sixteen years; Richard; W. Dar- win; George Beach; A. Orville and Lillian V. The Roses are Republicans and Methodists. Our subject is leader of the class in the LaHarpe charge and is otherwise one of the active members.
