Estos bandidos a caballo eran hombres duros, crueles criminales sin el menor vestigio de cultura como el que en ocasiones animaba las actividades de los bribones, haciendo menor su crueldad. Los kaficho y los galla eran proscritos, la escoria de sus tribus, hombres cuya cabeza tenía un precio. En ese instante no llovía y la estación lluviosa llegaba a su fin, pues eran mediados de septiembre; pero los ríos aún llevaban mucha agua y la tierra estaba blanda tras la reciente precipitación. Los shiftas cabalgaban, buscando botín en los caminantes, caravanas o aldeas, y mientras cabalgaban, los cascos desherrados de sus caballos dejaban una clara huella que se podía ver incluso corriendo. No es que aquello causara preocupación alguna a los shiftas, pues nadie les buscaba. Todos deseaban mantenerse lejos de su camino. Un poco más adelante, en la dirección en la que cabalgaban, una bestia cazadora acechaba a su presa. El viento soplaba desde donde se encontraban hacia los jinetes que se aproximaban, y por esta razón su rastro de olor no le llegaba a su sensible olfato; tampoco el blando suelo producía ningún ruido bajo las patas de las monturas que el cazador pudiera percibir durante el período de concentración y leve excitación inherente al acecho. Aunque el acechador no tenía aspecto de bestia de presa, en la forma que el término sugiere a la mente del hombre, lo era no obstante, pues en sus cacerías naturales llenaba su vientre con la caza y sólo con ella; tampoco se parecía a la imagen mental que uno podría tener de un típico lord británico; sin embargo, también lo era: se trataba de Tarzán de los Monos. Todas las bestias de presa encuentran poca caza durante las lluvias, y Tarzán no era ninguna excepción a la regla. Había llovido durante dos días y, como consecuencia de ello, Tarzán estaba hambriento. Un pequeño gamo bebía en un arroyo bordeado de arbustos y altos juncos, y Tarzán se arrastraba sobre el vientre a través de la corta hierba para alcanzar una posición desde la que pudiera atacar o disparar una flecha o arrojar una lanza. No era consciente de que un grupo de hombres a caballo se había parado en una suave elevación a poca distancia detrás de él, donde permanecían en silencio observándole con atención. Usha, el viento, que transporta el olor, también transporta el ruido. Aquel día, Usha llevaba el olor y el ruido de los shiftas lejos del aguzado olfato y oído del hombre mono. Tal vez, dotado como estaba de facultades perceptivas extremadamente sensibles, Tarzán debería haber captado la presencia de un enemigo; pero «de vez en cuando dormita el buen Homero». Por muy autosuficiente que sea un animal, siempre está dotado de precaución, pues no hay ninguno que no tenga enemigos. Los herbívoros más débiles siempre deben estar alerta por el león, el leopardo y el hombre, el elefante, el rinoceronte y el león nunca pueden relajar su vigilancia contra el hombre, y éste siempre debe estar en guardia contra éstos y otros. Sin embargo, no se puede decir que semejante precaución signifique miedo o cobardía, pues Tarzán, que carecía de miedo, era la personificación de la precaución, en especial cuando se hallaba lejos de su terreno, como ocurría ese día, y toda criatura era un enemigo en potencia. La combinación de hambre atroz y la oportunidad de satisfacerla debió de situar la precaución en suspenso como hacía, a menudo, cierto descuido producto del orgullo de sí mismo; pero, sea como fuere, el hecho es que Tarzán era completamente ajeno a la presencia de aquel grupito de villanos bandidos que estaban dispuestos a matarle, a él o a cualquiera, por unas pobres armas o por nada en absoluto. Las circunstancias que llevaron a Tarzán hacia el norte, hacia Kaffa, no forman parte de esta historia. Quizá no eran urgentes, pues el Señor de la Jungla gusta de vagar por las regiones remotas aún no tocadas por la devastadora mano de la civilización y no precisa más que un leve incentivo para hacerlo. Aún no saciado de aventura, puede ser que los más de novecientos mil kilómetros cuadrados de Abisinia supusieran un atractivo irresistible para él por sugerir un misterioso país remoto y los secretos etnológicos que ha protegido desde tiempo inmemorial. Vagabundos, aventureros, proscritos, falanges griegas y legiones romanas, todos han entrado en Abisinia en las épocas que relata la historia o la leyenda para no reaparecer jamás; e incluso algunos creen que este lugar guarda el secreto de las tribus perdidas de Israel. ¿Qué maravillas, pues, qué aventuras podrían no revelar sus rincones remotos? De momento, sin embargo, la mente de Tarzán no estaba ocupada por pensamientos de aventura; no sabía que ésta se cernía amenazadoramente detrás de él. Su preocupación y su interés se centraban en el gamo al que tenía intención de cazar para satisfacer el hambre atroz que sentía. Avanzó arrastrándose con cautela. Ni siquiera Sheeta, el leopardo, acecha más silenciosamente o con mayor sigilo. Detrás, los shiftas ataviados con túnicas blancas abandonaron la pequeña elevación desde donde le habían estado observando en silencio y descendieron hacia él con la lanza y el arcabuz a punto. Estaban perplejos. Nunca hasta entonces habían visto a un hombre blanco como éste; pero si su mente sentía curiosidad, en su corazón sólo habitaba el asesinato. El gamo levantaba la cabeza de vez en cuando para mirar alrededor, cauto, receloso, y, cuando lo hacía, Tarzán se quedaba paralizado. De pronto, la mirada del animal se centró por un instante en algo en la dirección del hombre mono; luego, giró en redondo y se alejó a saltos. Tarzán miró atrás al instante, pues sabía que no era él quien había asustado a su presa, sino algo que se hallaba más lejos y que los ojos atentos de Wappi habían descubierto; y esa rápida mirada le permitió ver a media docena de jinetes que avanzaban lentamente hacia él, le indicó quiénes eran y explicó su propósito. Al comprender que eran shiftas, Tarzán supo que venían sólo a robar y a matar, y supo también que eran enemigos más despiadados que Numa. Cuando vieron que les había descubierto, los jinetes echaron a galopar en su dirección, agitando sus armas y lanzando gritos. No dispararon, despreciando evidentemente esta víctima armada de forma primitiva, pero parecía que su propósito era derribarle y pisotearle con los cascos de sus caballos o empalarlo con sus lanzas. Quizá creyeron que buscaría la seguridad huyendo, lo que les proporcionaría además la emoción de la persecución; ¿y qué presa podría proporcionar mayores emociones que el hombre? Tarzán no se giró ni echó a correr. Conocía todas las posibles vías de escape en el radio de su visión y los peligros que razonablemente cabía esperar, pues las criaturas de la selva deben saber estas cosas si quieren sobrevivir; y por eso comprendía que no había escape posible de los jinetes mediante la huida; sin embargo, esto no le asustó, y se quedó firme para pelear, listo para aprovechar cualquier circunstancia fortuita que le ofreciera una posibilidad de escapar. Alto, de proporciones magníficas, musculoso más como Apolo que como Hércules, vestido sólo con un estrecho taparrabos de piel de león con la cola del león colgando delante y detrás, ofrecía una espléndida figura de primitiva masculinidad que sugería más, tal vez, el semidiós de la selva que un hombre. Llevaba en la espalda su carcaj de flechas y una lanza corta y ligera, la floja espiral de cuerda hecha de hierba colgada al hombro y en la cadera, el cuchillo de caza de su padre, el que le había sugerido por primera vez a Tarzán niño su futura supremacía sobre las otras bestias de la jungla aquel lejano día en que su joven mano lo clavó en el corazón de Bolgani, el gorila; en la mano izquierda tenía su arco y entre los dedos, cuatro flechas más. Tarzán era tan veloz como Ara, el rayo. En el instante en que descubrió y reconoció la amenaza que le venía por detrás y supo que los hombres habían descubierto su presencia, se puso en pie de un salto y, en el mismo instante, tensó su arco. En aquel momento, quizás incluso antes de que los shiftas que iban delante se dieran cuenta del peligro al que se enfrentaban, dobló el arco y lanzó la flecha. El arco del hombre mono era corto pero potente; corto, para poder llevarlo fácilmente por la jungla y el bosque; potente, para que clavara sus flechas en el pellejo más duro y llegara a un órgano vital de su presa.

The research explores the social and cognitive elements of narrative, and the manner in which structure impacts the understanding and development of narrative. The genre boundaries of medium and content are explored to gain an understanding of reader preference and expectation. The concept of reader expectation is then applied to multiform narrative in order to understand its functionality, before the question of effective combination of these elements is raised in regards to the medium of hypertext. This methodology is then implemented in the piece Natural Habitat, testing the merit of this approach in the resulting work of fiction. 3 Natural Habitat is a story describing the journey four friends make through the Amazon jungle after surviving a plane crash. Isolated and in a hostile environment, the four survivors find themselves slipping into surreal worlds that seem futuristic, fantastic, horrific, and tinged with noir. Some begin to question their sanity, while others adapt to their environs readily, but each faces their darker side as the fears in their minds begin to play out on the landscape around them.

However, it seems to me not unethical to pirate an idea occasionally from one or the other, provided that the subject be handled in such a way as to impart a definite impression of fictionizing. Had the story that I am about to tell you broken in the newspapers of two certain European powers, it might have precipitated another and a more terrible world war. But with that I am not particularly concerned. What interests me is that it is a good story that is particularly well adapted to my requirements through the fact that Tarzan of the Apes was intimately connected with many of its most thrilling episodes. I am not going to bore you with dry political history, so do not tax your intellect needlessly by attempting to decode such fictitious names as I may use in describing certain people and places, which, it seems to me, to the best interest of peace and disarmament, should remain incognito. Take the story simply as another Tarzan story, in which, it is hoped, you will find entertainment and relaxation. If you find food for thought in it, so much the better. Doubtless, very few of you saw, and still fewer will remember having seen, a news dispatch that appeared inconspicuously in the papers some time since, reporting a rumor that French Colonial Troops stationed in Somaliland, on the northeast coast of Africa, had invaded an Italian African colony.

It is my contention that the Tarzan, Pellucidar, and Caspak stories take place in the same universe, a dimension that we will call The Wold Newton Universe (WNU). John Carter and Carson Napier also were born in and start out in the WNU, but their adventures carry them to an alternate dimension, which we shall call the Edgar Rice Burroughs Alternate Universe (ERB-AU). The stories listed on The Wold Newton Universe Crossover Chronology establish that John Carter's Barsoom (from which two invasions, the first Martian invasion against Earth and the second Martian invasion against Annwn, were launched - see Mars: The Home Front) exists in the same alternate universe that contains Carson Napier's Amtor (Venus). It is probable that Zillikian (the planet on the opposite side of the Sun from Earth in Bunduki) is also contained in this alternate universe, the ERB-AU, as well as Thanator (as shown in the Jandar of Callisto series). Humanity's name for their planet in the ERB-AU is Annwn, not Earth (see The Second War of the Worlds), and is called Jasoom by natives of Barsoom. The alternate future described in Burroughs' The Moon Maid and The Moon Men, then, must be the future in store for the planet Annwn.

The Worshop Bestiary depicts a mother ape who is attacked by an archer as she carries her babies, one blue and the other green. The bestiaries explain that if a monkey gives birth to twins, she strongly prefers one over the other. If she is pursued, she holds the one she loves in her arms while the one she detests clings to her back. But when she becomes too tired to run on only her back legs, she must abandon the one she loves and is left carrying the one she hates.
