Slightly dished and legend flat in places, otherwise very fine, UNIQUE £4,000-5,000 Provenance: DNW Auction 122, 2 April 2014, lot 306. This is generally believed to be a type issued by Robert de Ferrers, second Earl of Derby (1139-65), in the early 1140s, at a time when royal control had all but broken down. It is clearly related to a group of die-duplicates struck at Derby by the same moneyer [Mack 175(a)-(k)]. The de Ferrers’ family seat was Tutbury Castle and it is therefore not surprising that Walchelin would have been employed there for a short time. Walchelin was actually a family name and it may well be that the moneyer was a family member. Tutbury was unknown as a mint in the reign of Stephen until the discovery of this coin

210 Chester mint, Shilling, mm. three pellets on obv. only, crowned bust left with lace collar, rev. crowned oval shield with lion-skin garniture, 5.69g/6h (Lyall d/vi; Sharp, BNJ 1982, p.246, 2, same dies; SCBI Brooker –; N 2630/1; S 3133A). Struck from oversized dies on a small but full-weight flan, about very fine and excessively rare £6,000-8,000 Provenance: Found in Norfolk 2017. This extremely rare coin would seem to be part of an emergency coinage struck during the siege of Chester in order to pay the troops. Although the correct size and weight for a Shilling, the inner circles on both sides of this coin are larger than normal. With a diameter of 24mm, the obverse die is of unusually detailed workmanship for a silver issue and cut in deeper relief than usual. It may have been intended for the striking of a gold coin and, in fact, the portrait bears a considerable resemblance to the unite illustrated in SCBI Brooker (1110). The reverse inner circle measures 26mm and the die is recorded by Lyall as being used on his halfcrown b/ii. As at other mints during the Civil War, the coins bear direct witness to the extraordinary circumstances under which they were struck

VIRTVS SAEC C, radiate lion left with thunderbolt in mouth, RSR in exergue, 3.66g (Shiel –; RSC –; cf. RIC 591; Sear –). Of fine style and workmanship, extremely fine and extremely rare, an exceptional specimen £7,000-9,000 Although in direct revolt against the Emperor Diocletian in Rome, Carausius went to extraordinary lengths to legitimise the foundation of his break-away empire in Britain and portray it as a new Golden Age. Just as Augustus had done in 17BC, he represented his new power as the fulfilment of a prophecy and the longed-for re-establishment of peace. The Secular Games were celebrated as part of this cyclical rebirth at intervals of 100 or 110 years from Augustus’ date or from the foundation of the city of Rome in 753BC. Thus Claudius celebrated them in 47, Domitian in 88, Septimius Severus in 204 and Philip II in 248. The defeat of Maximian’s fleet around 289 strengthened Carausius’ position in Britain and could be seen as heralding a new age of tranquility and an appropriate moment to celebrate the Secular Games. The striking of an antoninianus (RIC 393) of similar design to those issued by previous emperors dates Carausius’ Games to his fourth Consulship, 289-90. The design of a lion with a thunderbolt in its mouth may refer to a passage in the Thirteenth Sybilline Oracle “Then shall a dread and fearful lion come, sent from the sun, and bearing forth much flame” 447 Julian II, Siliqua, Lugdunum, 360-3, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right, rev. 521 Jean de la Vallete (1557-68), Zecchino, 3.39g/2h (RS p.41, 1; Schembri p.42, 1; F 5). Nearly extremely fine, rare £1,000-1,500 The first stone of the new city of Valletta was laid by Jean de Vallete in March 1566, part of a project to protect Malta from Turkish attack and occupation. The scheme was aided and financed by the Pope and the great Catholic monarchs of Europe including Charles IX of France, Philip II of Spain and Sebastian of Portugal. The Maltese zecchino was closely modelled on its Venetian counterpart which, named the ducato, was introduced in 1284. It soon became the trade coin of preference for the whole of the eastern Mediterranean. The name zecchino (from the Italian word zecche, meaning mint) became established around 1550. The Venetian coin lasted until 1797; the Maltese counterpart was struck at intervals until 1756 when it was replaced by coins of the gold scudo system

As patron Saint of the Order, St John the Baptist is depicted on many of the silver Maltese issues. At a party to celebrate Herod’s birthday, her dancing pleased the king so much that he promised to give her anything she desired. On the advice of her mother, upon whose instructions John had been imprisoned, she is said to have declared “Bring me the head of John the Baptist on a platter”. Although appalled at the suggestion, Herod reluctantly agreed and had John executed
