Frances Parkinson Keyes Books In Order. Frances Parkinson Wheeler was born in the year 1885 to John Wheeler in Charlottesville. Her father served as the Greek Department chairperson at the University of Virginia. After the death of her father, Parkinson’s mother remarried and then moved to New England with the entire family. Keyes had to split the time she had between Newbury and Massachusetts. Upon moving to New England, Keyes attended private schools in Genève, Switzerland, Boston and Berlin Germany. During her school years, Frances traveled widely across the world. At 18 years, Frances Keyes got married to Henry Keyes and moved to Pine Groove farm which was Henry’s family estate. Frances and Henry had a total of three sons. Henry Keyes got involved in politics and was even elected to the House of Representatives in New Hampshire. Keyes was later elected to the state senate and finally as a governor. Several years later after serving as a governor, Keyes was elected to the Senate where he served for 18 years. After her husband had died in the year 1938, Frances spent most of her time traveling across the United States and Europe before finally deciding to settle at New Orleans, Louisiana. Keyes became a professional writer during the 1920’s when she wrote her very first series, Letters from a Senator’s wife and Good Housekeeping. She also served as a contributing editor between the year 1923 and 1935. Furthermore, Frances also wrote about her life as the wife of a politician in two different memoirs, All Flags Flying and Capital Kaleidoscope.

The Mystery of Paul Morphy, America's First CelebrityBy Patricia A. DuigonAside from Davy Crockett, Paul Morphy was America's first international celebrity--and quite possibly the best chess player who ever lived. During his 1859 visit to Europe, he trounced all the greatest players. To this day, his recorded games delight students of chess. And yet before he had his 22nd birthday, Paul Morphy had already become one of those "What ever happened to...?" ex-celebrities. He gave up chess. After a catastrophic nervous breakdown, he gave up almost everything. He died at the age of 47, apparently due to a stroke brought on by overtaxing himself on a very hot day and then taking a cold bath.Frances Parkinson Keyes set herself two tasks: to revive Morphy's fame, which was well-deserved, and to try to explain the mystery of his anticlimax. These she accomplished by undertaking research whose depth and thoroughness awed me, personally. Why did Morphy give up chess? Why did he turn his back on fame? What did he do during the Civil War? And what caused his extreme breakdown, from which he never really did recover? Some readers may feel that there is more information in this book than they want in a novel--this is a unique novelization of Morphy's life.

Kempf KEMPF-- 1 SHARED LIVES: WOMEN WHO WROTE FOR WOMEN A STUDY OF FOUR FEMALE AUTHORS: JANET LAMBERT, GEORGETTE HEYER, FRANCES PARKINSON KEYES, AND INEZ HAYNES GILLMORE IRWIN BY ANDREA CARON KEMPF I. INTRODUCTION This is a study of women who wrote fiction for women. It is an attempt to locate the points where their lives and works converged and to discover what messages implicit, explicit, and subliminal, were broadcast to the readers at those intersections. It is, simply, a very personal examination of the lives and works of four fascinating women whose fiction, for one reason or another, has mattered to me. In addition, it is not a judgmental study of women‟s fiction. It is a given that tens of millions of American women read pulp fiction every year. Janice Radway, in her wonderful and very academically sound book, Reading the Romance, has thoroughly examined the nature of romance fiction and the act of reading it; and many other scholars of popular culture Kempf KEMPF-- 2 and women‟s issues have drawn their own conclusions about the role of romance fiction in women‟s lives.
