Letter from the Editor by Jim Furey

Originally, I thought there were a number of things that would bear discussion here. One is how The Biking Life Bike Show turned out and, frankly, it turned out great. Sure there were some things that could have been done better, but I think we established a nice baseline for ourselves. In addition, I thought I could write about integrity and how some people surely lack it, but made the choice to save that topic for the future. Instead, I decided to do a retrospective and recognize those that have once again risen to the occasion to help me.

The Biking Life Magazine is an independent magazine; I answer to none except you, the reader. I do this not to get rich, but because I have a passion for motorcycling, as do you. I thank all of you who pick up our magazine every month and patronize our advertisers; that combination, readers and advertisers, make this all possible. Throughout the magazine’s history, people have come along at various times, become my friends and some have asked if they could do something to help. This year has been truly exceptional in that regard.

It started out early with Dave ‘Monty’ Monachella coming on board and playing a more active role. I don’t know how he found the time to do that with all the charitable work he does, but that is the way Monty is. He always looks to be helpful. Another addition is John Skala who took a more active role as a photojournalist for us and as a friend. While occasionally we disagree, I truly appreciate the fact that he is always ready to help. Robert Barnhill, a talented writer/photographer, became a contributor as did Douglas Kelly. Another blessing was the addition of Betsi Heckencamp, Bob ‘OldSkool’ Bradford, Fuzzy and Fred Zumalt. Then there are more trusted friends who are always there like Kathy Haverstick, who is a veritable powerhouse for The Biking Life Magazine, Killer Miller, Kim Brauch and Cher Petrovic who have been strong supporters for years; Jennifer, my sister; Joy, my wife; David Charles, the webmaster, David Camden, and I’m sure some others I have missed. We are looking forward to hearing more from all of them. If you like what we do, thank these people when you see them out for without them, I could not do this.

I know this month many of you will be busy shopping for and doing the party thing. While you are out and about, I would like to invite all of you to attend one or more of our DVD release parties. The first is the 8th at TJ’s Bar & Grill in Pevely, MO. The second is the 14th at Jack’s Iron Horse on St. Charles Rock Road and the third is the 15th at the Cellar Room on North Broadway in Alton, IL. I have been told by many people that they like this year’s DVD even better than last.

I thank the sponsors of this year’s DVD: Doc’s Harley Davidson, TJ’s Bar and Grill, and Fog Hollow. By the way, the DVD makes a great Christmas gift—don’t tell them, our family will be getting the latest DVD from Santa! Thanks to all of you and may you and yours have all the best of the season.

Bikes, Blues and BBQ Rally Submitted by Fred Zumalt

Held in Fayetteville, Arkansas on October 3-6, 2007, the Bikes, Blues and BBQ Motorcycle Rally was an awesome event. An estimated 300,000 - 400,000 people attended and 50,000-100,000 bikes were there from every state for the 3rd largest rally in the United States.

The weather was great. The crowd was well- behaved enjoying the bikes, food, lots of vendors • Pastor Z from the Biker Church Branson and the wonderful hospitality of the businesses in looking over the crowd • Crowd gathered around West Coast Choppers tent trying to get an autograph from Jesse James. The Fayetteville Police did a super job of keeping things rolling smooth and safe with a smile and great attitude.

new LOWER PRICE HardTail Humor Tonto & Lone Ranger

The Lone Ranger and Tonto went camping in the desert. After they got their tent all set up, both men fell sound asleep.

Some hours later, Tonto wakes the Lone Ranger and Says, “Kemo Sabe, look towards sky, what you see? “

“The Lone Ranger replies, “I see millions of stars.”

“What that tell you?” asked Tonto.

The Lone Ranger ponders for a minute then says, “Astronomically speaking, it tells me there are Millions of galaxies and potentially billions of Planets. Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Time wise, it appears to be approximately a Quarter past three in the morning. Theologically, the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful Day tomorrow.

What’s it tell you, Tonto?”

“You dumber than buffalo shit. It means someone stole the tent. “ BC Cycle Builds a Winner we started taking photos of it with the help of Kasey Cooper who is seen here as well. by Jim Furey The bike has a 2 up, 38 degrees of rake frame and a 200 You’ve probably read here or had your friends tell you how rear tire. Kathy and I were leaving our November CMA meeting. We stopped to talk to our friends, Ray and Linda, as they were suiting up and getting ready to get on their bikes to ride home. Linda told Ray she needed to stop for gas; we were in our car and commented we also needed to gas up. Ray and Linda pulled out on Watson Road behind us and we lost sight of them in the traffic. Later, as I was waiting for traffic to clear and pull out of the gas station, we noticed police lights and emergency vehicles east of us at the intersection of Lindbergh and Watson Road. That small, still voice I have told me to go back – that it could be Ray and Linda. Kathy said she thought we should go back there, but I thought it couldn’t be them; it was late, and we still had a 30-minute drive to get home. (As we now know, Ray had hit a car that ran a red light. God had his hand on Ray as he walked away with just some bad bruises. The bike will have to be replaced, but we can replace the bike – we can’t replace Ray!) Kathy and I wish now we had listened to that still, small inner voice we had both heard. Some people may call it intuition, our conscious, or common sense. Christians feel it is God’s guidance and the Holy Spirit leading us. Before Jesus died, He promised His followers that God would send us a Comforter to guide us, teach us, and lead us in the ways God wants us to live and act. In Psalms 25:9, the Bible tells us, “God leads the humble and teaches him His way.” Learning to listen and obey is something we have to experience and learn. We must learn to ignore distractions and focus on God. God may be guiding us to do something we don’t want to do. That still, small voice also tells us when we are about to do something dumb like riding after we’ve been drinking, showing off on our bikes, or being led by our egos and not common sense. In our everyday lives we are guided by what we know is right. We were taught when we were very young to obey and act right; we have to remember as adults we still need to obey and act responsibly in whatever we do. As an adult, it’s God and His Holy Spirit that’s our teacher. We need to slow down and listen to that voice of God that He has instilled in each of us. If you don’t think God is talking to you or you want to know how to listen closer to his voice, ask any Christian biker at your next event, contact one of the following people, or call me. 31 I was happy to see that the largest group of people participating, other than the WW2 vets, was the biker community. I counted three blocks full of bikes, an excellent turnout if I do say so. If I were better at math, I would have counted them all but suffice it to say there was a b—t load. Thanks to our friends at Doc’s Harley Davidson, Gateway to the West Harley Davidson .and all the other clubs and organizations, like the Vietnam Vets MC and the Patriot Guard Riders, Veterans Parade 2007 all sorts of bikes were in attendance. Every year Saint Louis celebrates Veteran’s Day like so any communities do with a parade. The turnout at this year’s Veterans Day Parade in Downtown St. Louis was upsetting because it seems that too many have little respect for those men and women in our military who put their lives on the line everyday so that we can be free to do as we want when we want. It is because of their sacrifices, we all get to live a better life. I don’t care how you feel about the war; make a statement with your vote, not by disrespecting those that follow orders. The men and women who serve, deserve your respect and gratitude. While sometimes Most of the people I saw at the parade were the it seems like we need to carry more and more older generation; however, I did see a group papers anyway, without our military, we may of younger people who looked to me like they be speaking a different language or perhaps might have just came back from the war, and watching for the secret police. Killer Rides for Charity

During the month of August when it was like riding on the surface of the sun around here, Killer was out doing the charitable thing and riding to go along with it. The first run was for Jerry’s Kids and was put on by the St. Charles HOG Chapter. This ride benefited the MDA, used the unique idea of three different starting places and ended

at the Moose Lodge in St. Charles Mo. I used TJ’s in Pevely, Mo. as my jumping in place and rode the route backwards to get to my destination. It was a great ride with plenty of really nice scenery and winding roads to keep you alert. The route from Washington through the wine country out to our final stop was particularly enjoyable. At the final stop we were treated to music, food and drink (well soda and water anyway). The St. Charles HOG did a good job, but there are always lessons to be learned. This ride is for a truly worthwhile cause so it would be great to see a lot more of you supporting this ride. The following weekend, Kevin and I rode on the Rip BAD (Bikers Against Diabetes) Ride. This is a nationwide ride but it was the first year for our region’s organizers. Both diabetes and MD are badass life threatening ailments that need cures, especially diabetes since as I get older more and more of my friends seem to develop this disease. I have seen firsthand the effects of this disease. While it spread me a little thin, I was more than happy to support both of these. This ride wasn’t nearly as scenic as the MDA ride but the end result was a better organized event with help from 97.1 FM talk radio. The Dave Glover Clover Band provided the music, Hooters the food with those luscious Hooter girls to serve it and the Surdyke family of dealerships also lent their support as a sponsor. The turnout was good, but not great. They went up against Hartbauer/McBride Poker Run and that hurt this run’s attendance, but the games were fun and the band rocked. They even had a group doing covers of ‘70s punk stuff which was good. supporting, use different wristband colors. The charities could split the cost feel free to rip it off and claim it as yours. There are way of hiring some truly killer bands. I think they could charge to many charity events, everyone has got their collective between 50 and 100 bucks per bike. Yeah, it is a lot of hand out, so much so that a hard working man can’t afford money, but when you think of how many times you spend all of them. So here’s the plan, other than the big rides, that anyway and if the T-shirts and pins are included for Bikers for Babies, Bikers helping Bikers, BAD Ride and free at one big Killer event, then it is a pretty good deal. If Bikers for a Badge, I suggest that all the smaller charity you need help, you can reach me at The Biking Life; feel events need to get together, rent a nice, big place and have free to ask.
