Shrovetide 2021 Family names that remind us of Shrovetide

Many family names of the residents of Slovenia, when we see them for the first time, can be associated with Shrovetide (pust in Slovenian). On 1 January 2020, 308 residents of Slovenia had the family name Kurent, 354 Pust, 36 Krof and 8 Šema.

Although the traditional figure of kurent comes from Ptuj, a city in the Podravska statistical region, on 1 January 2020 most Kurents lived in the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region (57% of all residents whose family name is Kurent). There were only 10 Kurents in the Podravska statistical region. Carnival and birthday on the same day? Double joy!

Many people look forward to the Shrovetide carnival because of the carnival goodies, which do not run out during the carnival time. The most famous carnival delicacy in Slovenia is certainly doughnuts. How much would it cost us to buy the ingredients for them in the store and prepare this fried delicacy at home?

From January to November 2020, Slovenia imported almost EUR 6 million and exported a little over EUR 1.3 million of festival, carnival and other entertainment articles (including conjuring tricks and the like). Our main trading partner for such items was Italy: 22% of total imports of such products and 42% of total exports.

The value of imports of carnival and other entertainment products (including magic tricks and the like) has greatly exceeded the value of exports in all the years since 2000.

Shrovetide festivities end with Ash Wednesday, when Christians begin 40 days of fasting before . During this time, they are restricted, among other things, in the consumption of food, especially meat. So here are some meat statistics:

 In 2019, a resident of Slovenia consumed on average 91 kg of meat, most of it pork and the least horsemeat.  The self-sufficiency rate in fresh meat (and processed meat products) in 2019 was 81%. From 2000 to 2019, it was never 100%.  Slovenia is most self-sufficient in horsemeat, poultry meat and beef (which are being exported), and the least in pork.  In 2020, a kilogram of beef on the bone cost on average EUR 6.27, a kilogram of boneless pork EUR 5.82 and a kilogram of boneless chicken EUR 7.92.
