  • Students, Space, and the State in East Pakistan/Bangladesh 1952-1990
1 BEYOND LIBERATION: STUDENTS, SPACE, AND THE STATE IN EAST PAKISTAN/BANGLADESH 1952-1990 A dissertation presented by Samantha M. R. Christiansen to The Department of History In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of History Northeastern University Boston, Massachusetts September, 2012 2 BEYOND LIBERATION: STUDENTS, SPACE, AND THE STATE IN EAST PAKISTAN/BANGLADESH 1952-1990 by Samantha M. R. Christiansen ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate School of Northeastern University September, 2012 3 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the history of East Pakistan/Bangladesh’s student movements in the postcolonial period. The principal argument is that the major student mobilizations of Dhaka University are evidence of an active student engagement with shared symbols and rituals across time and that the campus space itself has served as the linchpin of this movement culture. The category of “student” developed into a distinct political class that was deeply tied to a concept of local place in the campus; however, the idea of “student” as a collective identity also provided a means of ideological engagement with a globally imagined community of “students.” Thus, this manuscript examines the case study of student mobilizations at Dhaka University in various geographic scales, demonstrating the levels of local, national and global as complementary and interdependent components of social movement culture. The project contributes to understandings of Pakistan and Bangladesh’s political and social history in the united and divided period, as well as provides a platform for analyzing the historical relationship between social movements and geography that is informative to a wide range of disciplines.

What was once a united state of Bengal is now divided into two parts, the sovereign country of Bangladesh and the state of West Bengal in India. The predominant religion in Bangladesh is Islam and that of West Bengal is Hinduism. Throughout history, ideas and identifications of certain elements of culture as ‘tradition’ have played an important role in the construction of notions of identity in this region, where multiple cultures continue to meet. The calibre of the conversations was a rare happening in our region.¨ -Dayanita Singh, DAS 2016 Participating Artist 5 The Dhaka Art Summit (DAS) is an international, non-commercial research and exhibition platform for art and architecture connected to South Asia. With a core focus on Bangladesh, DAS re-examines how we think about these forms of art in both a regional and an international context. Founded in 2012 by the Samdani Art Foundation, DAS is held every two years in a public- private partnership with the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, with the support of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and Ministry of Information of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, the National Tourism Board, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), and in association with the Bangladesh National Museum. Rejecting the traditional biennale format to create a more generative space for art and exchange, DAS’s interdisciplinary programme concentrates its endeavours towards the advancement and promotion of South Asia’s contemporary and historic creative communities.

  • 17Th Graduation Ceremony-2019 1 MILITARY INSTITUTE of SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY (MIST) MIRPUR CANTONMENT
17th Graduation Ceremony-2019 1 MILITARY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (MIST) MIRPUR CANTONMENT INAUGURAL CEREMONY OF MIST ON 19 APRIL 1998 HONOURABLE PRIME MINISTER OF PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF BANGLADESH SHEIKH HASINA UNVEILING THE FOUNDATION PLAQUE 1717thth Graduation Graduation Ceremony-2019 Ceremony-2019 22 MESSAGE Minister I am delighted to know that Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) is going to celebrate its 17th Graduation Ceremony on 19 March 2019. On this day, MIST will cross another milestone of success in the field of technical and knowledge based education. I firmly believe that establishment of MIST on 19th April 1998 by the Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was a milestone in the history of technical education in Bangladesh towards materializing the dream of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to build “Sonar Bangla”. MIST is contributing significantly in building technology and knowledge based prosperous nation. On this day, I would like to congratulate all graduates and wish them all the very best in pursuing their career in future. I would like to convey the message to all graduates that you have worked hard, and your parents, families, faculty members and the institute itself have sacrificed much to get you here, to become a proud engineer. Make them and your institute proud through your contributions, especially by being hard working, innovative, committed and ethical in your profession. I am glad to know that within a short span of only 19 years. MIST has grown into a well-rounded institute with its own campus and 12 departments under four faculties where more than two thousand five hundred civil and military students pursue their study.
