Cengage and Mcgraw-Hill – Clearance Application
PUBLIC VERSION NOTICE SEEKING CLEARANCE OF A BUSINESS ACQUISITION PURSUANT TO SECTION 66 OF THE COMMERCE ACT 1986 29 October 2019 The Registrar Business Acquisitions and Authorisations Commerce Commission PO Box 2351 WELLINGTON Pursuant to s 66(1) of the Commerce Act 1986 notice is hereby given seeking clearance of a proposed business acquisition. 3921295 1 PUBLIC VERSION 1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1.1 McGraw-Hill Education, Inc. ("McGraw-Hill") and Cengage Learning Holdings II, Inc. ("Cengage") intend to merge their global education publishing businesses (the "Transaction"). The centre of gravity of this matter is in the United States. 1.2 McGraw-Hill and Cengage (together, "the Parties") are publishers of educational resources. Cengage publishes primary, secondary and higher education products, while McGraw-Hill publishes primary and higher education (but not secondary) products. Consistent with the approach taken in the Commission’s decision in Bertelsmann SE & Co. KGaA and Pearson plc, the Parties consider the publishing of education resources to be the relevant market. However, even if the Transaction is assessed more narrowly, no concerns arise: (a) The Parties are not each other’s closest competitors. McGraw-Hill does not curate titles specifically for New Zealand, whereas Cengage does. 1 (b) In the primary sub-segment, the Parties' offerings are complementary (McGraw-Hill offers “teacher led” learning materials, while Cengage’s are “student led”) and McGraw-Hill has a de-minimis segment share of [ ]%. (c) In the higher education ("HED") segment, the Parties are only both present in nine (out of approximately 50) subject areas. 2 Where the Parties are both present, they only have a small number of titles that compete. -

The Case of Harlequin Enterprises and Sweden. Skrifter utgivna av Avdelningen för litteratursociologi vid Litteraturvetenskapliga institutionen i Uppsala. Publications from the Section for Sociology of Literature at the Department of Literature, Uppsala University, 38. 272 pp. Uppsala. ISBN 91-85178-28-4. English text. This dissertation deals with the Canadian category publisher Harlequin Enterprises. Operating in a hundred markets and publishing in twenty-four languages around the world, Harlequin Enterprises exempliıes the increasingly transnational character of publishing and the media. This book takes the Stockholm-based Scandinavian subsidiary Förlaget Harlequin as a case-study to analyze the complexities involved in the transposition of Harlequin romances from one cultural context into another. Using a combination of theoretical and empirical approaches it is argued that the local process of translation and editing – here referred to as transediting – has a fundamental impact on how the global book becomes local. -

A Never Ending Never Done Bibliography of Multicultural Literature for Younger and Older Children
DOCUMENT RESUME ED 407 388 SP 037 304 AUTHOR Walters, Toni S., Comp.; Cramer, Amy, Comp. TITLE A Never Ending Never Done Bibliography of Multicultural Literature for Younger and Older Children. First Edition. PUB DATE 96 NOTE 51p. PUB TYPE Information Analyses (070) Reference Materials Bibliographies (131) EDRS PRICE MF01/PC03 Plus Postage. DESCRIPTORS Adolescent Literature; Adolescents; *American Indian Literature; American Indians; Asian Americans; *Black Literature; Blacks; Children; Childrens Literature; Elementary Secondary Education; *Ethnic Groups; *Hispanic American Literature; Hispanic Americans; United States Literature IDENTIFIERS African Americans; *Asian American Literature; Latinos; *Multicultural Literature; Native Americans ABSTRACT People of all ages are addressed in this bibliography of multicultural literature. It focuses on four major ethnic groups: African Americans, Asian Americans, Latino Americans, and Native Americans. Within each category a distinction is made between those works with an authentic voice and those with a realistic voice. An authentic voice is an author or illustrator who is from the particular ethnic group and brings expertise and life experience to his/her writings or illustrations. A realistic voice is that of an author or illustrator whose work is from outside that experience, but with valuable observations. An asterisk notes the distinction. No distinction is drawn between juvenile literature and adult literature. The decision is left to the reader to make the choices, because some adult literature may contain selections appropriate to children. Two appendices provide: a selected annotated bibliography (14 entries) on multiethnic/multicultural literature references and analyses and sources of multiethnic/multicultural books.(SPM) ******************************************************************************** Reproductions supplied by EDRS are the best that can be made from the original document. -

All rights reserved. Permission to use for any non-profit educational purpose, such as distribution in a classroom, is hereby granted. For any other use, please contact the author. (e-mail: fraknoi {at} fhda {dot} edu) This is a selective list of some short stories and novels that use reasonably accurate science and can be used for teaching or reinforcing astronomy or physics concepts. The titles of short stories are given in quotation marks; only short stories that have been published in book form or are available free on the Web are included. While one book source is given for each short story, note that some of the stories can be found in other collections as well. (See the Internet Speculative Fiction Database, cited at the end, for an easy way to find all the places a particular story has been published.) The author welcomes suggestions for additions to this list, especially if your favorite story with good science is left out. Gregory Benford Octavia Butler Geoff Landis J.
