    GENDER REPRESENTATION IN SPORTS: A PERSPECTIVE THROUGH INDIAN SPORTS FILMS Amaljith N.K1 Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, India Abstract The women sports players in India have to face many challenges to cross the borders of glory. Firstly, most of the family are conservative and their traditional way of thinking about women playing sports and they lack supports and encouragement from the family and society and from the government. The social taboo on women in participation in sports is still there in many parts of the country. And if she succeeds in the sports, the next steps maybe they have to face is gender inequalities and discriminations in the name of caste, creed and sex.Indian film industry is one of the largest cinema hubs in the world and the Indian film stars are renowned for the astounding performances in the Indian films and the foreign films. Apart from the dominated Bollywood films there are many regional language films also across the country such as Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, and Marathi etc. Tamil film industry centred at Chennai, Tamil Nadu is India’s second largest film industry in terms of films produced and distributed. This study aims to analyze how gender and women are portrayed in Indian regional sports films aka Tamil films and how they act and survive the social stigma and stereotypes and succeed their goal. The study also explores the representation of gender in films and women empowerment through sports. Mixed methodology is used for the study. Qualitative scene by scene analysis and quantitative content analysis with coding is applied.

Abstract In Tamil movies centered on mass heroes, rapid editing helps the Filmmaker to make the audience believe the completely unrealistic action sequences into realistic presentation by engaging them. In action packed movies except few action sequences, which are in real, majority of the action sequences are built with intensified continuity editing with rapid cuts. In Tamil Cinemas in most of the movies, traditional Hollywood continuity style of storytelling are employed in representing space, time, and narrative relations in sequences. Largely action packed Tamil movies adhere to the premises of Classical Continuity with the intensification in Editing. Factors, whichfavour the intensified continuity editing, are the availability of NLE Softwares and tactics of different styles of camera work. To achieve this Continuity editing rules are strictly followed to hide the cuts and to give more emphasize on expression of the actors involved in action. Recent films, in particular, the Asuran, Bigil, Ratchasan, Kala, Vada Chennai, and Psycho movies were taken into the study. Also, the characters in the films were subjected to content research. This research demonstrates that the above movies have more violent scenes. The above movie’s heroes and main characters have criminal backgrounds. Such movies have stressed the fact that violence is the only solution to all social problems. In addition, the fact that film heroes with criminal backgrounds create negative and violent thoughts in the minds of those who watch it. It is an offense that young children should be shown to be involved in crime. Psychological impacts due to the recent changes in contemporary cinema are pointed out from this research article. The violent scenes of these films affect the minds of the people. Especially young children are affected. Although such movies contain good ideas, the high prevalence of violence in them can be considered avoidable. Cinema is not only an excellent entertainment medium but it is also a reflection of society.
