The death of Mr. Brigden, which took place under tragic circumstances on November 18th, removes yet another of our older friends. He was actively a~sociated with the W. H.S. from the beginning. Of late years he has been unable to help, but in his active period he was a tower of strength. For some time he was responsible for editing the Pmceedings, and throughout a long period its pages were enriched by articles written by him on various subjects, all marked by painstaking accuracy. Mr. Brigden was a life-long student of the life and literature of the eighteenth century, especially in relation to the Methodist revival. He was a skilled collector ot books and prints relating to his favourite subject. • He was a helpful collaborator with Bishop John Fletcher Hurst in the elaborate History of Methodism issued in 1902. In the preface, Dr. Hurst says that Mr. Brigden's studies contributed largely to the substance and form of the three volumes constituting the British section, and that his antiquarian knowledge and zeal provided the material on which its illustration was based. In the preface to the Standard Lette1·s the Editor says, "To the Rev. Thomas E. Brigden our debt is very great. He has supplied notes which light up the Oxford and Georgia letters, and has put his unrivalled knowledge of Wesley's life and times at our service." Often consulted by American and Continental scholars and research students, he was very generous in making his material and knowledge available for inquirers.

    FOOD AND DRINK AWARDS 2010 The Cornwall Life Food & Drink Awards 2010 are being held at The Headland Hotel in Newquay on Tuesday 28 September 2010, where winners will be treated to a drinks reception and a three-course lunch, followed by an Awards Ceremony. Lostwithiel Market – Best Farmers’ Market Joy Cheeseman (right) is from Lostwithiel Farmers’ Market. “Since the 2008 Cornwall Life Food & Drink Awards we opened a shop called Taste Cornwall in Liskeard, which sells only local food and locally made skincare products. The shop celebrated its second birthday in February this year.” We consider that Cornish produce is the best, sourced from local producers, whether on the land and in small fields, in the kitchen and in small quantities, or specialising in artisan products for the niche market.” Our favourite places to eat: “We prefer to eat amongst our friends, using the best ingredients Cornwall has to offer and ensuring that the skills of home cookery are alive and well to pass on to another generation.” Rosevine – Best Restaurant Tim Brocklebank (left) is the owner of The Rosevine on the Roseland peninsula. “We love Cornish produce because it is the freshest. The warmer weather ripens fruit better than elsewhere. The clear waters produce seafood of the best quality refreshed by the Atlantic swells.     PROCEEDINGS. ONE Of WESLEY'S UNPUBLISHED ABRIDGMENTS. I have a volume in which appears in Wesley's handwriting, " The gift of Mr. Turner, JJ1arch 9, 1788." It belonged to him. It is entitled: "The Triumph of Faith over the World, the -Flesh and the Devil, exemplified in the Life, Death, and spiritual Experiences of that burning and shining light, Mrs. Joanna Turner, who departed this life on the 24th of December 1784, in the 53rd year of her age. Rev. xiv., r3. Bristol: T. Mills, in Wine Street. 1787." It has been revised throughout in Wesley's characteristic style, the title being reduced by his pen to-" The Life and Death of Mrs. Joanna Turner." She is referred to in Wesley's Journal, Sep. 12, q8o: "At the invitation of that excellent woman, Mrs. Turner, I preached about noon in her chapel at Trowbridge." A letter from her to Wesley was published in the Anninian J.Vfagazine, qg8, p. 47, in which she says: "I am not, my dear Sir, one of your Society, nor do I see in all things as you do; But I dare not think lightly of you on that account." Evidently Wesley did not think lightly of her. The memoir of her is by Mary Wells. Mrs. Turner was one of the daughters of Mr. John Cook, " Clothier." Dr. A dam Clarke married one of her nieces, and Joseph Butterworth, M.P., another. In her early days she was " the ringleader in all the vain amusements of the Town." She visited London, Bristol, and " many places of public pleasure, such as Tunbridge Wells, White-conduit-house, Vauxhall, &c." In London she heard Mr.
