The motivation for H the research arises from problems detected in the remote 1 4 2 interaction with embedded devices over dynamic wireless networks in such systems. The selected approach is based on the application of the small- world paradigm to cyber-physical systems. It is here assumed that the concept of small world, "six degrees of separation", can be expanded to also cover communication with wireless embedded devices in cyber-physical systems context. The main contributions are the technical enablers referred to as dynamic communication spaces, dynamic M2M service spaces, configuration and remote use of services, communication overlay, access systems selection, integrated mobility, secure ad hoc networking, situated opportunistic communication, hierarchical networking for small-world networks, and short-cuts for network optimization. The enablers have been evaluated as separate technical methods and means by means of experiments and/or simulations. According to the evaluations, the enablers seem to work well as separate building blocks and that they can be combined to expand the concept of small world to also cover communication with embedded devices. Wireless short-cuts can improve the scalability and efficiency of dynamic wireless networking and weak links are essential in the neighbour discovery process. -

The tips are fun and the hope of discov- ering hidden gems makes it a worthwhile task. John Southern Former editor of Linux Magazine I enjoyed Ubuntu Kung Fu and learned some new things. I would rec- ommend this book—nice tips and a lot of fun to be had. Carthik Sharma Creator of the Ubuntu Blog (http://ubuntu.wordpress.com) Wow! There are some great tips here! I have used Ubuntu since April 2005, starting with version 5.04. I found much in this book to inspire me and to teach me, and it answered lingering questions I didn’t know I had. The book is a good resource that I will gladly recommend to both newcomers and veteran users. Abstract. Ubuntu is an operating system with Linux kernel based on Debian and distributed as free and open-source software. It uses Unity as its default desktop environment, which results in more difficulties of usage for Microsoft Windows users. In this paper, we present a lightweight desktop environment named UKUI based on UbuntuKylin, the official Chinese version of Ubuntu, for Linux distribution. It is designed as a pluggable framework and provides better user experience during human-computer interaction. In order to evaluate the performance of UKUI, a set of testing bench suits were performed on a personal computer. Overall, the results showed that UKUI has better performance compared with Unity. Introduction Linux is a freely available operating system (OS) originated by Linux Torvalds and further developed by thousands of others. Typically, Linux is packaged in a form known as a Linux distribution for both desktop and server use. Some of the most popular mainstream Linux distributions are Red Hat [1], Ubuntu [2], Arch [3], openSUSY [4], Gentoo [5], etc. There are several desktop environments available for nowadays modern Linux distributions, such as XFCE [6], GNOME [7], KDE [8] and LXDE [9]. -

'Building' Architects and Use of Open-Source Tools Towards Achievement of Millennium Development Goals
'Building' Architects and Use of Open-source Tools Towards Achievement of Millennium Development Goals. Oku, Onyeibo Chidozie Department of Architecture Faculty of Environmental Sciences Enugu State University of Science and Technology Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were established by the United Nations to improve the well-being of humans and their habitat. Whether they are the target beneficiaries or amongst the parties administering services for achieving the MDGs, humans must carry out these activities in a physical environment. Hence, the Seventh Goal of the MDG has an indirect and far-reaching relationship with the others because it deals with the sustainable development of the built environment. Architects deliver consultancy services that span the design, documentation and construction supervision of the built environment. This study sought to determine the extent to which these professionals can do this, with respect to the Seventh Millennium Development Goal, using mainly open-source tools. The study draws from literature reviews, end-user feedback or reports, interviews with developers of applicable open-source products, and statistics from a survey, launched in 2011, for capturing how architects use ICT in their businesses. Analysis of popular open-source technologies for the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry show a concentration of resources in favour of the later stages of the Architect's role, rather than the design and contract-drawing stages. Some of the better-implemented tools are either too cryptic for professionals who communicate in graphical terms, or heavily biased towards software engineering practices. The products that promise Building Information Modelling (BIM) capabilities are still at an early developmental stage. -

Eng. @ SUSE since 2018, working on Xen, KVM, QEMU, mostly about performance related stuff ● Daily activities ⇒ how and what for I use my workstation ○ Read and send emails (Evolution, git-send-email, stg mail, ...) ○ Write, build & test code (Xen, KVM, Libvirt, QEMU) ○ Work with the Open Build Service (OBS) ○ Browse Web ○ Test OSes in VMs ○ Meetings / Video calls / Online conferences ○ Chat, work and personal ○ Some 3D Printing ○ Occasionally play games ○ Occasional video-editing ○ Maybe scan / print some document 2 ● Can all of the above be done with an immutable OS ? Immutable OS: What ? Either: ● An OS that you cannot modify Or, at least: ● An OS that you will have an hard time modifying What do you mean “modify” ? ● E.g., installing packages ● ⇒ An OS on which you cannot install packages ● ⇒ An OS on which you will have an hard time installing packages 3 Immutable OS: What ? Seriously? 4 Immutable OS: Why ? Because it will stay clean and hard to break ● Does this sound familiar? ○ Let’s install foo, and it’s dependency, libfoobar_1 ○ Let’s install bar (depends from libfoobar_1, we have it already) ○ Actually, let’s add an external repo. It has libfoobar_2 that makes foo work better! ○ Oh no... libfoobar_2 would break bar!! ● Yeah. It happens. Even in the best families distros -
A Training Programme for Early-Stage Researchers That Focuses on Developing Personal Science Outreach Portfolios
A training programme for early-stage researchers that focuses on developing personal science outreach portfolios Shaeema Zaman Ahmed1, Arthur Hjorth2, Janet Frances Rafner2 , Carrie Ann Weidner1, Gitte Kragh2, Jesper Hasseriis Mohr Jensen1, Julien Bobroff3, Kristian Hvidtfelt Nielsen4, Jacob Friis Sherson*1,2 1 Department of Physics and Astronomy, Aarhus University, Denmark 2 Department of Management, Aarhus University, Denmark 3 Laboratoire de Physique des Solides, Université Paris-Saclay, CNRS, France 4 Centre for Science Studies, Aarhus University, Denmark *[email protected] Abstract Development of outreach skills is critical for researchers when communicating their work to non-expert audiences. However, due to the lack of formal training, researchers are typically unaware of the benefits of outreach training and often under-prioritize outreach. We present a training programme conducted with an international network of PhD students in quantum physics, which focused on developing outreach skills and an understanding of the associated professional benefits by creating an outreach portfolio consisting of a range of implementable outreach products. We describe our approach, assess the impact, and provide guidelines for designing similar programmes across scientific disciplines in the future. Keywords: science outreach, science communication, training, professional development Introduction Recent years have seen an increased call for outreach and science communication training by research agencies such as the National Science Foundation -
