Finnegan 1 Mitchell Finnegan Trudy Lewis English 4995 – Honors Thesis Research Portion 13 August 2016 Parody and Media Literacy in Nathan For You The premise of Nathan For You isn’t very different from other television shows. It follows Nathan Fielder around the greater Los Angeles area as he searches for struggling businesses in need of his marketing expertise. The only problem is, Fielder doesn’t exactly qualify as a marketing “expert.” At least, not in the conventional sense. He relies on legal loopholes, logical fallacies and publicity stunts as the primary foundation for most of his ideas. Essentially, he starts by identifying an indisputable truth about a market segment (e.g. people share snacks when they go to the movies); then he makes a logical observation about that truth (e.g. movie theatres would make more money if customers didn’t share snacks); and finally, he somehow convinces business owners to go along with an absurd scheme to exploit that truth in order to make money (e.g. install security cameras in theatres to enforce a no-sharing policy). To be clear, the no-sharing policy is an actual pitch Fielder brought to a movie theatre in one of his episodes. Some of his other ideas include “poo” flavored frozen yogurt, real-estate aimed at people who believe in ghosts and the sale of liquor to minors on a layaway plan that withholds the alcohol until they come of legal age. In one episode from the Comedy Central series, Fielder opens with a speech explaining how some viewers criticize him for pushing businesses to take risks Finnegan 2 without ever taking any risks himself. -

Next up this week: another Thorn fascinating New Yorker, John Wilson. Wilson is the host and creator of a new show that just premiered on HBO a couple months ago. It’s called How To with John Wilson. It is—and I don’t think I’m exaggerating here—one of the best shows to come out in the last year. And I have to say that I think it is my absolute favorite. How To with John Wilson centers around John, but you don’t ever actually see him on camera. He’s behind the camera for pretty much every frame. He takes you through his apartment, his neighborhood, around New York, sometimes points even further than that. Each episode of How To focuses technically on teaching you something. How to put up scaffolding or improve your memory or make the perfect risotto. But it is profoundly discursive. As John wanders down a street with his camera, you see whatever catches his eye: a weird smiling security robot at a grocery store. A guy sitting on a “walk, don’t walk” sign. Or, you know, there’s an extended shot of Kyle MacLachlan from Twin Peaks fussing with his metro card in a subway station. -

While studying for the SAT, this character is given his first beer by Homer, which turns him into an alcoholic. -

IN FOCUS: What’s So Funny about Comedy and Humor Studies? Introduction by MAGGIE HENNEFELD, ANNIE BERKE, and MICHAEL RENNETT, editors guy walks into a bar. No, wait. Three guys walk into a bar. No. Let us start over. Twenty-some professors, graduate students, contingent lecturers, and independent scholars walk into a gray-toned hotel conference room, arrange the chairs into a makeshift semicircle, and energetically debate the future of com- Aedy and humor studies as an academic fi eld. It might not sound like the start of a promising joke, but if it’s any consolation, it only gets funnier from there. The essays that follow have been borne out of our annual meet- ings of the Comedy and Humor Studies Scholarly Interest Group at the Society of Cinema and Media Studies Conference.1 Across the essays in this section, our goal is to highlight the exciting schol- arship in our fi eld while also drawing attention to its limits and blind spots. We argue that comedy studies has been widely marginalized, deployed only to consider conventional genre comedies or identifi - able comedic performers. Yet comedic issues have crucial bearing on nearly every aspect of contemporary life, media culture, and interdisciplinary humanities scholarship. Above all, this section is a springboard for exploring many of these untapped intersections of comedic modes, social politics, and critical media scholarship. The Opposite of Comedy Is . “Comedy” used to mean the opposite of “tragedy,” but now laughter sprawls out everywhere. The project begins as a one-off invisible theatre performance but quickly morphs into an See table of contents experiment in the possibilities and limits of theatre of the real when Fielder re-stages the initial event with actors so the production can be repeatable, and thus marketable as a consistent product. In the “Smokers Allowed” episode, Publisher(s) Fielder’s comedic attempts to painstakingly recreate events highlight the inherent ridiculousness of reality-based performances. This Nathan for You Graduate Centre for the Study of Drama, University of Toronto episode brings together two related approaches to performance—reality television and reality theatre—that are linked through their focus on reality, ISSN but which tend to diverge in content and reception. In doing so, he reveals a double standard in the cultural valuation of reality television and theatre of 1196-1198 (print) the real—one that ironically relies on an anti-theatrical bias towards televisual 1913-9101 (digital) forms. At a time when there is heightened anxiety about what constitutes reality and an increasing concern that all realities are constructed, Fielder’s Explore this journal satire raises a number of pressing questions related to performance and the real, including: How might a satirical, comedic approach to theatre of the real help us understand omissions and biases within this form?
