Muff Andersson & Elsie Cloete Fixing the guilt: Detective fiction Muff Andersson is a researcher at the and the No.1 Ladies’ Detective University of South Africa’s Graduate School while Elsie Cloete teaches Agency series in the Department of English, Wits School of Education, University of the Witwatersrand. Email: [email protected] [email protected] Detective fiction and the No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series This article examines the emergence of popular detective fiction in Africa as part of a new third wave of literature. While the new wave is a very particular response to conditions on the continent it nevertheless taps into the main streams of detective fiction that have emerged from Britain and in some respects the USA in the last hundred years. In particular this article focuses on the No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith and examines ways in which the postcolony reproduces the colony and how, in some respects the erstwhile empire desires to produce the postcolony. Key words: African literature, detective fiction, Alexander McCall Smith. Introduction To date, two distinct waves in African Literature have been identified. The first wave is defined as writing back to colonialism and includes elite authors such as Ngugi wa Thiong’o and Chinua Achebe while the second wave manifests as post-colonial dis- illusionment, exemplified by Dambudzo Marechera’s writing. Andersson (2005a) has contended that a third wave is emerging from where the second wave left off and can most clearly be identified in African popular detective fiction. This is an organic movement that works with audiences’ own experiences through intertextual refer- ences to political memory, witty word play, reversals, cinema noir and theatre of the absurd techniques, its techniques being a form of resistance to what Andersson calls the “dialogic violence” that arises from the contradictions between the claims of official memory and the experiences of popular memory.

FREE BLUE SHOES AND HAPPINESS PDF Alexander McCall Smith | 256 pages | 01 Feb 2007 | Little, Brown Book Group | 9780349117720 | English | London, United Kingdom Blue Shoes And Happiness : Alexander McCall Smith : According to Precious Ramotswe, proprietor of the No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, it is the small things that make a life - look after the pebbles and the beach will look after itself. Botswana remains relatively crime-free and Blue Shoes and Happiness Ramotsweaccompanied by her owl-like assistant, Mma Makutsiearns her living righting the small wrongs. A strange case of malicious blackmail and the superstition of a group of farm workers are about Blue Shoes and Happiness that troubles the detective agency in this outing. This will be familiar territory for fans of the series. Cases are cracked thanks to her traditional common sense and the consumption of vast quantities of tea, while the main concern of the Blue Shoes and Happiness is the pursuit of that most elusive state of being: happiness. For Precious Ramotswe, happiness comes fleetingly and it should be grasped in two hands and held tightly. It's not hard to see why Alexander McCall Smith's novels have become so successful. They are a paean to a much-loved Africa and it's hard to find fault with such good-natured and pleasurable optimism. Topics Crime fiction The Observer. Alexander McCall Smith reviews. • Alexander Mccall Smith: Reader's Guide
SponsorSponsoreded by by JUST BUFFALO LITERARY CENTER ALEXANDER McCALL SMITH READER’S GUIDE Alexander McCall Smith Like any good writer, McCall Smith focuses on the places he knows well—southern Africa and Edinburgh, Scotland. He was born in 1948 in the city of Bulawayo in Rhodesia, then a British colony and now known as Zimbabwe. He wrote his first story when he was just eight but began seriously writing adult fiction much later in his professional career. Commercial success came quickly with his 1998 mystery novel, The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, which recounts the adventures, trials, and triumphs of Precious Ramotswe, a self-made private investigator in the African country of Botswana—a nation, like its heroine, often caught between traditional and modern values. The book, which has sold 20 million copies worldwide, singlehandedly brought McCall Smith international fame, and in just five years he went on to write five more popular books in the series: Tears of the Giraffe (2000), Morality for Beautiful Girls (2001), The Kalahari Typing School for Men (2002), The Full Cupboard of Life (2003), and In the Company of Cheerful Ladies (2004). More fiction series followed, including the “Isabelle Dalhousie Mysteries” set in an Edinburgh suburb; Portuguese Irregular Verbs, a collection of short stories he self-published in 1997 that parodied academia through their main character, the German philologist Professor Von Igelfeld, and subsequently launched the trilogy “The 2½ Pillars of Wisdom”; and a 2004 serial novel, 44 Scotland Street, which he published in The Scotsman in It could be said that prolific writer Alexander McCall 800-word installments.

The "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" series follows the personal and professional lives of Precious Ramotswe, the first female sleuth in Botswana, as she dispenses wisdom and bush tea to her clients, most of whom are engaged in domestic intrigues. Resembling the novel of manners slightly more than the genre of detective 1 of 6 10/16/2016 11:56 PM Literary Sources - Document - Alexander McCall Smith http://go.galegroup.com.proxy.libraries.uc.edu/ps/retrieve.do?tabID=T0... fiction, this series is almost unanimously described by readers as charming and whimsical in its celebration of everyday events and fundamental human goodness. The moral dimension of the "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency"--and the three series of mystery novels that have followed it--is not surprising given Smith's status as an international ethics consultant and professor of medical law at the University of Edinburgh.
