O God, the protector of all who trust in you, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: increase and multiply upon us your mercy; that with you as our ruler and guide we may so pass through things temporal that we lose not our hold on things eternal; grant this, heavenly Father, for our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Notices

Sanctuary Sunday: On Sunday 24 June at 1.30pm, a special service will be held at the cathedral to celebrate the end of Refugee Week. The theme for this first Sanctuary Sunday is: ‘Different Pasts, Shared Future’ to emphasise the mutual desire for hope and peace. Revd Dr Inderjit Bhogal (former Methodist President and founder, Cities of Sanctuary) will be preaching. A variety of community representatives will also contribute to the service in keeping with the theme and as a reflection of Birmingham’s vibrant diversity.

Divine Beauty Concert: On 7 July at 5pm, the cathedral choir perform a musical treat as part of Birmingham Civic Society's centenary – The City Beautiful – celebrating the remarkable Burne-Jones stained- glass windows. A programme of great cathedral anthems inspired by each of the four windows, including Parry’s I Was Glad, Mendelssohn’s Hear My Prayer and O For the Wings of a Dove, Ireland’s Greater Love, music by Finzi and Wesley and several pieces written for Birmingham Cathedral Choir.

Christian Aid Week 2018. The following totals are now on their way to Christian Aid. Bucket collection 2797 Cathedral collection 1033 Concert 407 Pubs, shops and sundry 106 Total £4344

Many thanks to all who collected, gave, counted, played in the concert or helped in whatever way. The total is down on last year but all we can do is provide the opportunity for people to give, and this we did with more collector-time on the Square than in previous years. Many thanks again.

Cleaning volunteers: As recently reported at the APCM, the number of Cleaning Volunteers at the Cathedral has decreased over the past year – we’re now down to just two regular helpers! If you can spare as little as 2 hours a month to help then please contact Stephen Brooker, Head of Facilities on 0121 262 1850.

Divine Beauty: The website dedicated to the Cathedral’s Divine Beauty project also contains a blog. Blogs are short written accounts, generally with personal perspectives and the cathedral community are warmly encouraged to contribute. Vivienne Arnold has written a very lovely piece on the role the windows have played in her life. www.divinebeautyproject.com Please get in touch with Jane McArdle if you would like to contribute.

Winchester Cathedral Flower Festival: There is a major ‘Festival of Flowers’ inspired by the Winchester Bible taking place 5-9 September 2018 in Winchester Cathedral. The Birmingham Cathedral Flower Team is proposing a visit, by train, on Thursday 6 September. Other members of the congregations are welcome to join us. It will enable us to see more of Winchester’s wonderful building than most of us managed at Catherine’s installation. There will also be a large ‘trading area’ outside the cathedral and ‘afternoon tea’ can be booked. Tickets to the flower festival are £12 (£10 if we have a party of 15+); Afternoon Tea is £14 (menu can be provided); day return train fare is £48.40. (There may be reductions for group travel) For those wishing to stay longer in Winchester, the Holiday Inn is offering B&B on 6 September only for £134 for two persons sharing, including two tickets for the festival. Firm expressions of interest should be made to Canon Terry Slater by Sunday 24 June.
