MEN’SBASKETBALL 1 MEN’SBASKETBALL 1 CRUSADEROATH The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) developed a Student-Athlete Oath for the 2009-2010 academic and athletic year. The oath outlines the expectations accepted by all UMHB Student-Athletes and also details the pride those student- athletes feel to be a part of Cru Athletics. Student-athletes began using the oath for the first time in the fall of 2009 and it became a prominent and permanent part of the UMHB Student- Athlete experience. MEN’SBASKETBALL 3 MEN’SBASKETBALL 3 COACHDEWEESE Ken DeWeese just completed his 20th season as the Men’s Basketball coach at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor. UMHB has advanced to the NCAA Division III National Championships six times in the last 12 seasons and became the first American Southwest Conference program to advance to the NCAA Division III National Championship Game in 2013 under DeWeese’s direction. The Cru set a new school single season record for victories and the team’s final ranking of #2 in the country also represented a new high-water mark for the program that year. DeWeese was named National Coach of the Year by D3hoops.com, DIII News and CaptainU. DeWeese has guided the UMHB men to a pair of ASC Championships (2008, 2010) and six NCAA Division III National Championship appearances. The Cru also advanced to the NCAA Division III “Sweet 16” for the first time in program history during the 2010-11 season. DeWeese is 364-178 overall at UMHB and he has guided the Cru to postseason berths in 19 of his 20 years in Belton. Coach DeWeese reached a pair of coaching milestones in 2006-07 as he won his 100th game at UMHB and also topped 500 career head coaching wins as a collegiate head coach. He passed Richard Herbst to become UMHB’s all-time leader on the career coaching victories list that season and is now the only head coach in the history of UMHB men’s basketball to top 300 career wins at the school. He also went over 700 combined collegiate head coaching victories during the 2013-14 campaign. DeWeese was voted ASC West Division Coach of the Year in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013. DeWeese, who left MCC to become an assistant at Georgia State University in 1996, is only the third men’s bas- ketball coach in UMHB’s history. Before leaving for Georgia State, he compiled an impressive 404-105 record in 16 years as MCC’s head basketball coach from 1980-1996. During this time his team won 11 conference championships and he was named North Texas Junior College Conference Coach of the Year 11 times. In the 16 years that DeWeese was at MCC, they qualified for the playoffs 15 times. In 1992 and 1994, DeWeese was named the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Junior College Coach of the Year. Coach DeWeese began his coaching career at Smiley High School in 1969. From there he coached at Aransas Pass High, Sinton High, and Thomas Jefferson High in Port Arthur before breaking into the collegiate ranks at The University of Texas at El Paso. DeWeese served as an assistant at UTEP from ‘75-’80 before taking the head job at MCC. Ken and his wife Ann have a son, Kenny, and a daughter, Kelsey, and three grandchildren. Kenny and Kelsey are both graduates of UMHB. Coach DeWeese is also a contributor to BetterBasketball.com and the Basketball Coaches Journal. He is also a Review Board Member for the Applied Research in Coaching and Athletics Annual (ARCAA).

ASSISTANT COACH ZANE JOHNSTON Zane Johnston was named assistant coach for the UMHB men’s basketball program in May of 2012.

Johnston spent the 2011-12 season as a graduate assistant coach for the UMHB men and helped guide the Cru to a school-best 24-1 regular season record. The Cru was ranked as high as #5 in the country during the season. Johnston is a 2010 graduate of UMHB with a degree in exercise and sport science. He was a four-year letterman for the Cru and still holds the Ameri- can Southwest Conference record for career games played with 114. John- ston was a three-time ASC All-West Division selection and also earned ASC Academic All-Conference honors three times during his career. He played for two ASC Championship teams and three NCAA National Championship qualifiers with the Cru. Johnston has been involved with four UMHB’s five NCAA Tournament appearances as either a player or coach. He is currently working on his Master’s Degree in exercise and sport science at UMHB. Johnston also spent one year coaching in the Wylie Independent School District before returning to his alma mater as a graduate assistant. Johnston and his wife, Emmy, have two children, twins Max and Sloan.

Byrale also played collegiate basketball at Eastern New Mexico University and Northlake College, where he earned Newcomer of the Year and all-region honors. Byrale is the son of James Carter and Anthony and Avis Robinson.

DR. RANDY O’REAR, UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

Randy O’Rear became the 22nd president of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor when he assumed the office on June 1, 2009. O’Rear was named President and CEO of the university in a unanimous decision by the school’s Board of Trustees in September 2008. Dr. O’Rear is the first of president of UMHB who is also an alumnus of the university. He graduated from UMHB with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1988 and earned an MBA from UMHB in 1997. O’Rear earned a doctoral degree in Higher Education from Baylor University in 2004.

O’Rear has served at UMHB since 1988, most recently as executive vice president and chief operating officer. For more than 18 years, O’Rear has been actively involved in fundraising for the university. Under his leadership, gifts and grants dramatically increased, numerous endowed scholarships were established and major capital projects were completed, including the construction of the Parker Academic Center, the Mayborn Campus Center and the new Meyer Christian Studies Center.

O’Rear has also strong ties to the UMHB athletic department. He was also a two-year letterman for the UMHB baseball program as a right-handed pitcher. O’Rear held the school record for wins in a season for five years before that mark was broken in 1992. He also spent one year as a student assistant coach and two years as a full-time assistant coach for the Cru baseball team.

Originally from Waco, O’Rear is a graduate of Robinson High School. He and his wife, Julie, have three children, Ryan, Taylor and Reed. They live in Belton and are members of First Baptist Church, Belton, where O’Rear serves as deacon.

RANDY MANN, VICE PRESIDENT FOR ATHLETICS

Randy Mann was promoted to Vice President for Athletics in May of 2012 after serving as full- time Associate Athletic Director for four years. He spent the previous eight years serving as head men’s coach and associate AD. Coach Mann guided the Cru to the American Southwest Conference championship in 2008 and closed out his coaching career by guiding the Cru to the first NCAA Division III National Tournament berth in the program’s history. Mann also led the Cru to ASC championships in 2005 and 2001. The first conference championship was the first conference title in the history of the UMHB men’s golf program. The Crusaders never fin- ished lower than fourth in the ASC Tournament during Mann’s tenure in Belton. The Crusaders also narrowly missed earning the first NCAA Division III National Championship berth in the program’s history in the spring of 2004, although Dillon Gooch qualified as an individual to become the first UMHB men’s golfer to compete in the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

Coach Mann came to UMHB from Temple High School, where he spent the seven years as head coach of the boys and girls golf teams. Coach Mann spent a total of 19 years teaching and coaching in the Temple Independent School District. He took the Temple boys golf team to 4 district titles and 2 district runner-ups finishes in his 7 years as coach. In that same time, Coach Mann took the girls team to 3 district titles and 3 district runner-up finishes. The teams only missed the regional tournament once each during Coach Mann’s tenure.

Randy Mann is a 1980 graduate of Tarleton State University in Stephenville, and he received his master’s degree from Tarleton in 1998. He and his wife, Caroline, have three sons, Mitchell, Michael, and Marshall.
