4 from the president Since 1988, Capital Rowing Club has offered quality rowing opportunities and a sense of community and connectedness to residents of the greater DC Metro area. Capital has grown from a small group of dedicated individuals to an organization serving over 400 rowers in 2017. As a volunteer run organization, that is an incredible a feat, and while this past year was a busy one, we can see the fruits of this labor paying off. Capital’s Board of Directors used2017 to lay the groundwork necessary for the club to engage in an in-depth strategic planning process as well as celebrate our milestone 30th Anniversary year during 2018.

2017 Accomplishments • The Finance Committee launched a2 -year process of reviewing and evaluating our current financial controls, benchmarking against best practices, and making adjustments where needed to ensure the financial stability of the club for years to come. • Capital had its most successful fundraising year ever- shattering the $50,000 goal for the Ready All, Row! Fleet Fundraising Campaign and raising just over $70,000 for fleet improvements. • The organization hired9 coaches, including 2 head coaches while formalizing processes for hiring and recruitment. • The Safety Committee established a launch driver training program and began reviewing and revising the Club’s safety policies and manual. • In order to start the process of bringing the club current with its boat replacement plan, the board authorized the purchase of 8 boats to directly benefit every Capital program. All boat purchases were made without financing.

Looking into 2018 • Capital’s 30th Anniversary Steering Committee is leading the club in a year of celebration, which started with a special kick-off event in early March! • The Board of Directors is undertaking an intensive strategic planning process to lay out a road map for bringing Capital into the next phase of organizational life. • Capital Sprints Regatta has been renamed the Robert E. Day, Jr. Capital Sprints Regatta, to honor the memory of Bob Day, long-time Capital member who was instrumental in bringing rowing to the Anacostia River. • Over the spring season, the board began piloting a tiered, stipend pay system for coaches across the organization.

5 • The Finance Committee continues work on shoring up the club’s financial controls. • The board established a short-term working group to examine and make a recommendation for addressing the issue of multi-club rowing and racing. • Capital planned for the purchase of 5 boats in 2018 in order to continue bringing the club current in its boat replacement plan. In addition to the 5 boats purchased, CARP will receive one boat from US Rowing.

In addition to the many achievements we have had on the water, I hope you will be just as proud of all Capital has accomplished off of the water. I look forward to our continued work together and celebrating Capital’s milestone 30th year with you throughout 2018!

Sincerely,

Kirsten Peterson President, Board of Directors

6 membership and programs In 2017, Capital Rowing Club had 290 members and served over 400 rowers across 11 programs.

Competitive Sweep Coaches: Guennadi Bratichko, Elena Bratichko

Comp Men The competitive men’s program had a strong year, with 14 active rowers consistently winning events in local, regional, and national regattas. The men along with the women won the Sweep Trophy at the Regional Championship Diamond State Regatta for the second year in a row.

The men did exceptionally well at the 2017 US Rowing Masters National Championships. With only ten men participating, they placed 9th out of 70 programs in the team standings medaling in 6 of 7 events that including winning the very competitive Club E8+ for the second year in a row. Comp Men’s 4+ at Masters Nationals The Comp Men program ages span 23 to 77 years of age with varying degrees of rowing experience from former elite collegiate rowers to natural athletes who progressed up from the Learn to Row and club programs. The primary requisites for the Comp Men program are prior rowing experience, good physical condition, and a solid understanding of rowing technique.

7 Comp Women The competitive women’s sweep team had a fantastic 2017 racing season, and participated in a range of local, regional, and national events. During the sprint season our 20+ rowers and coxswains entered 9 events at the Diamond States Masters Regatta (DSM) and earned a respectable 5 medals. At the US Rowing Masters Nationals Capital Rowing Club placed 5th in points overall with the women’s sweep team earning 2 gold and 4 bronze medals out of 11 events entered. The head season culminated with the Head of the Charles Regatta, and the women rowing in the masters 8+ event. Year after year our masters women’s entry improves, and in spite of some stiff competition made it into the top5 finishers. After taking a few months off to recover and train over the winter we are ready to dive in to racing season 2018!

Club AM Coaches: Ben Sproule and Zoe Gentes

ClubAM had a really good year. It was a bit of a transition for us, as our long-time coach, Jon Clark, retired from full-time coaching. Ben Sproule and Zoe Gentes took over and were wonderful additions to the program and CRC. As usual, Club AM was something of a transition point for many, taking in new rowers from INR and out of town, and passing others on to the competitive team. We are not just a

8 club and racing program, but a training program for developing rowers.

We sent boats to 9 regattas, won several medals, and all got stronger, fitter, and better. In addition to the races where we medaled, our women’s 4+ seemed to constantly be pushing the Comp Women. At Stonewall, for example, they were second overall, just 4 seconds behind the comp women. Our mixed 8+ at DSM finished4 th overall, and 2nd in their heat, 2 seconds behind Comp and 0.5 seconds ahead of Club PM.

We interacted more with Club PM this season (and Comp and SAW as well), both socially and with mixed boats at regattas. We contributed a rower to a winning Club PM boat at one regatta and they contributed to a winning Club AM boat at another. We also reborrowed Joaquin to fill out our medal defending mixed 8+ at Head of the Occoquan (HOTO). We hope to continue all that in the 2018 season.

Club AM was probably the most active program, per capita, in supporting Learn to Row, Juniors, CARP, etc. We take pride in our volunteer work. We also led three “learn to cox” days.

9 Club PM Coaches: Nathan Ballou, Steve Neumann, Jane Wang

Club PM welcomed a new head coach, Nathan Ballou, and returning assistant coaches Steve Neumann and Jane Wang for a very successful year. The spring season was spent learning a new stroke in preparation for sprint and head races in the summer and fall. The team benefited both from returning rowers and new members from INR.

Highlights from the summer include a dominant win by our women’s novice 4+ at Stonewall in June and mixed 4+ duels at VBC, Charm City, and Capital Sprints; and strong performances at DSM. A small group traveled to Oak Ridge, Tennessee for Masters Nationals, where 16 rowers in 12 lineups won 6 medals.

Club PM attended the usual head races in the fall. A small group traveled to Wilmington, Delaware, for the Head of the Christina for the first time. The highlight of the fall season for the PM women was the Head of the Charles, where two women’s 4+s in the club category took 27th and 37th place. The men headed

Club PM women’s 8+ at the Head of the Christina

10 up to Philadelphia the following weekend for the Head of the Schuylkill, where one of the men’s 4+ finished3 rd and the men’s 8+ finished2 nd, earning two of our novices their first medals. The season culminated in the Head of the Hooch in foggy Chattanooga, Tennessee, where performances in the mixed open 4+ and mixed masters 8+ events earned all 9 rowers medals.

Finally, we’d like to highlight our volunteer MVPs: Rob MacTurk, Chris Donnely, and Jamie Mullan, who volunteered the most of PMers with Learn to Row this year, and who were also active volunteers at regattas.

Senior and Weekend (SAW) Coaches: Joe Spruill, Lisa Saladino

In 2017, SAW averaged 34 members across the 3 seasons, and were lucky to continue to have our 2 wonderful coaches: Lisa Saladino and Joe Spruill. We entered a men’s masters 8+ at Stonewall for the first time in many years, along with a women’s masters 8+. SAW had a few folks that participated in the scrimmage, three entries for Capital Sprints—a women’s 8+, a men’s 8+, and a mixed 8+—and had entries at Head of the Anacostia (HOTA) and HOTO.

As in past years, SAW members Mary Ellsworth and Jim Smailes continued to do an amazing job with the montly bioswale work sessions.

SAW athletes at Capital Sprints

11 SAW celebrated the arrival of a future Capital Junior in training. Just prior to the holidays we capped the year off with our end of year party, and presented the annual SAW awards and coaches gifts. Tim Heidel and Christina Samuels received the 2017 Coaches awards, Andy Sohn and Susie Allen-Sierpinski received the 2017 SAW MVP awards.

Sculling and Small Boats Program Coaches: Bob Reichart, Olivia Duckworth, Jason Johnson

Our sculling and small boats program consists of rowers of all ages and abilities. We have rowers ranging from 13 to 80 and those who have sculled for years to brand new rowers. We have a competitive and club team as well as independent scullers who are certified by our coaches to take out boats on their own. Our competitive program meets 5 mornings a week, and we have 2 club programs, which each row 2 nights a week and on Saturday mornings.

We saw increased participation in our club and independent sculling programs in 2017, with between 25 and 30 rowers between club programs and an average of 15 independent scullers. Our competitive program remained strong and constant, with 5 to 8 people over the 2017 season. In addition, we have over 30 people with their own boats. Including our juniors, we have well over 70 scullers in CRC as a whole.

In 2017, CRC introduced sculling to a number of new people through private

12 lessons from our coaches and a Learn to Scull introductory course that was followed by an intermediate and novice sculling program in the fall.

Many of our scullers put their talents on display at regattas. Scullers participated in 13 local regattas, Masters Nationals, and Head of the Charles. They raced every type of sculling boat: single, double, and quad. CRC had a very good showing locally, winning in the Head of the Anacostia women’s single, women’s double, and mixed double; Capital Sprints men’s masters single; Diamond States men’s lightweight single and mixed quad; Head of the Christina women’s single; Head of the Potomac women’s double and men’s single; and the Occoquan Chase men’s single.

We also had a great showing at Masters Nationals with a gold in the men’s lightweight single, third place in the women’s lightweight single, and a third place with our women’s double. Finally, we placed 4th in the men’s double and 15th in the men’s single at the Head of the Charles. If all of that were not enough, a number of our scullers also raced and won in sweep boats.

We continued to improve our fleet by adding two doubles and a coxed quad. Above all, the 2017 season brought together a diverse group of people who share one very common passion—sculling.

Capital Adaptive Rowing Program (CARP) Coaches: Jai Mitchell, Brandon DuBois, Susie Allen-Sierpinski, Meagan McAllister, Michele Woolberg

CARP had an excellent year in 2017. We added practice sessions to accommodate our continuously growing team. The increase in equipment and practice times allowed us to better structure practices in order to support athletes in their recreational and competitive goals (an ongoing challenge).

In the spring, Dammie Onafeko won gold and Shannon Franks silver in the World Rowing Virtual Indoor Sprints. In the summer, we had 6 athletes compete at both Stonewall and Capital Sprints, and 3 at VBC. Moving into the fall, 8 athletes competed at HOTA, and 4 traveled to Chattanooga, Tennessee, for the Head of the Hooch. Finally, at Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints and World Indoor Rowing Championships in February 2018, Shannon and Kenny Marrs won bronze medals, and all 6 rowers who raced achieved personal bests.

The competitive highlight of the year was Bayada Regatta. In August, 10 athletes— our greatest number of participants at Bayada to date!—medaled in every event they entered. Over 12 events, our athletes won 8 gold, 4 silver, and three bronze

13 Capital Adaptive athletes at the Bayada Regatta medals. Dammie, our 100% visually impaired rower, was able to compete in a 1x event for the first time ever at Bayada. His guide boat was raced by one of the Capital Juniors men. It was a phenomenal pairing and we are so grateful!

We received the VA Freedom Rows Grant for the second year in a row. The grant supported the purchase of a small trailer, launch motor, additional sets of oars, a new fixed seat, and an additional2 x boat.

We collaborated with the Navy Wounded Warrior—Safe Harbor adaptive athletics program, hosting a 2-hour erg session with severely wounded, ill, and injured Navy sailors at the Anacostia Community Boathouse. Capital and CARP coaches led the session.

14 Capital Juniors Coaches: Nathan Ballou, Steve Neumann, Brandon DuBois, Nicole Iribarren, Kate Hall, Michele Hill

Capital Juniors is a year-round after-school rowing program for middle and high school students in the DC area. The novice and varsity teams compete at the regional and national levels. The team emphasizes teamwork, fitness, and friendship. Its mission is to make rowing safe, affordable, and accessible to as many DC-area students as possible.

The 2017–2018 Juniors roster included over 60 students from seven of eight DC wards, from Maryland, and from Virginia. They represented over16 area schools that do not offer scholastic rowing. For these students, Capital is their introduction to the sport of rowing. On the novice team, some of rowers learned to row as recently as winter 2018; on the varsity team, some learned to row with Capital as many as six years ago.

On the novice team—coached by Brandon DuBois, Nicole Iribarren, and Michele Hill—the rowers primarily worked in eights and fours and focused on building their rowing technique and fitness. The varsity team—coached by Nathan Ballou, Steve Neumann, and Kate Hall—worked in small and big boats and trained to prepare for competition across the year. In the fall, both crews raced at Head of the Anacostia, Occoquan Chase, Head of the Schuylkill, and a friendly ACBA scrimmage.

In spring 2018, the teams will compete at Anacostia Sprints (Capital’s first juniors-only regatta), Cooper Cup, Baltimore City Championships, and Upper Merion Regatta. In the summer, Capital Juniors is excited to once again offer its free learn-to-row summer camp, Capital Juniors crew at scrimmage with Bishop which comprises four separate weeks Ireton in fall 2017 of instruction. We look forward to

15 introducing the campers to the sport, hoping that many of them continue with us in the fall season. Also this summer, Capital Juniors will offerfor the first time a competitive rowing program, whose goal is to instruct athletes in all aspects of rowing (sweep and sculling) and coxing in order to prepare them for high-stakes racing at the national level.

Bioswale Work Sessions Led by Mary Ellsworth and Jim Smailes, bioswale work sessions take place on the last Sunday of each month. The bioswale—the buffer between the boathouse and the river—is a first line of defense, soaking up stormwater runoff and filtering pollution before it enters the Anacostia. Volunteers at work sessions collect trash and recyclables, remove invasive species, clear and mulch around shrubs, plant new trees and shrubs, and remove driftwood.

Community Programs In 2017, Capital participated in the following community outreach activities:

• Anacostia River Festival, April 9 • Earth Day Cleanup, April 22 • National Learn to Row Day, June 3 • H Street Festival, September 16
