  • How an Illusionist Used Copyright Law As a Patent, 14 J. MARSHALL REV
THE JOHN MARSHALL REVIEW OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME: HOW AN ILLUSIONIST USED COPYRIGHT LAW AS A PATENT SYDNEY BECKMAN ABSTRACT Teller is a famous illusionist who, in recent years, has been performing a stage act with Penn Jillete in Las Vegas, Nevada. Teller’s signature trick, known as “Shadows,” was copied by a magician in Belgium who offered to sell the method. The Belgian’s trick, titled “The Rose and Her Shadow,” was virtually identical to Teller’s illusion. That which we call a rose by any other name . Teller wanted the Belgian magician to stop offering the trick for sale. After an unsuccessful attempt to negotiate, Teller took his dispute to federal court. His goal? To protect that which cannot be protected — at least not by Copyright law — the secret behind his trick. This paper discusses how a court used Copyright law to do just what Teller sought: To protect the secret behind a copyright protected magic trick. • Sealed Vision
SEALED VISION The X-Ray Eye Act Written by Will Dexter eBook Version TRICKSHOP.COM About the cover: The gentleman pictured is Kuda Bux. During his lifetime, Kuda’s outstanding technique and showmanship helped him earn international acclaim with the X-Ray Eye Act. The following brief bio is from an article by Bill Larsen, Jr. in Genii Magazine. The Man With the X-Ray Eyes Kuda has just returned to the Magic Castle from a tour of Canada with Peter Reveen. He was a sensation and will again join the Reveen Company, if plans work out, to tour Australia later in the year. As near as I can make out from the clippings (and I don’t want to ask Kuda as this is to be a surprise) Kuda must be either 69 or 70 years old having been born in Aknmur, Kashmir, Pakistan in either 1905 or 1906. Early in his life he realized he had an ability not shared by many. This was concentration. We are all aware of the five senses but Kuda was to develop within himself a sixth sense or inner sense. Through his successful years of performing he has been headlined in papers around the world as: “The Wonder of the Century;” “One of the most famous ‘Makers of Magic’ who ever came out of the East;” and the “8th Wonder of the World.” In the thirties he made headlines in England (which were to be repeated in the U.S. in the forties) with his fire walking. A fire trench 25 feet long and six feet across was filled with seven tons of logs and a ton of charcoal.

  • Magical Thinking: How Learning to Act Like a Magician Can Make You a Better Physician Michael B
Magical Thinking: How Learning to Act Like a Magician Can Make You a Better Physician Michael B. Pitt, MD For most of history, the line between magic and medicine was blurred. Before there was a pathophysiologic understanding of disease, there was little distinction between a magician and a physician. Both may wave their hands, utter some Latin-sounding words, produce a potion, and promise to make something (a coin or an ailment) disappear. Still today, providers who have successfully reduced a nursemaid’s elbow or who have made vertigo vanish with a canalith repositioning maneuver have borne witness to the healing power of medical sleight of hand. Recently, the use of magic at the bedside has seen a renaissance of sorts. In a 2017 review, Lam et al1 described many ways providers are incorporating magic in medicine, ranging from teaching patients magic tricks for physical therapy2 to its use as humor therapy as a prophylactic anxiolytic for patients.3,4 As a professional magician and a pediatrician, I have seen how magic and medicine intersect. Whereas I occasionally use a trick to calm an anxious child before an examination, I use the skills of how a magician approaches an audience in every patient encounter. Over Department of Pediatrics, M Health Fairview University of Minnesota the last decade, I have taught over 3000 providers how learning to think Masonic Children’s Hospital, Minneapolis, Minnesota and act like a magician, even without doing a magic trick, can improve DOI: https://doi.org/10.1542/peds.2020-0420 their ability to connect with patients.

EXHIBITION GUIDE & EVENT HIGHLIGHTS STAGING MAGIC A warm welcome to Senate House Library and to Staging Magic: The Story Behind the Illusion, an adventure through the history of conjuring and magic as entertainment, a centuries-long fascination that still excites and inspires today. The exhibition displays items on the history of magic from Senate House Library’s collection. The library houses and cares for more than 2 million books, 50 named special collections and over 1,800 archives. It’s one of the UK’s largest academic libraries focused on the arts, humanities and social sciences and holds a wealth of primary source material from the medieval period to the modern age. I hope that you are inspired by the exhibition and accompanying events, as we explore magic’s spell on society from illustrious performances in the top theatres, and street and parlour tricks that have sparked the imagination of society. Dr Nick Barratt Director, Senate House Library INTRODUCTION The exhibition features over 60 stories which focus on magic in the form of sleight-of-hand (legerdemain) and stage illusions, from 16th century court jugglers to the great masters of the golden age of magic in the 19th and early 20th centuries. These stories are told through the books, manuscripts and ephemera of the Harry Price Library of Magical Literature. Through five interconnected themes, the exhibition explores how magic has remained a mainstay of popular culture in the western world, how its secrets have been kept and revealed, and how magicians have innovated to continue to surprise and enchant their audiences.
