34 Xavier's Heritage

Xavier was founded in 1831 by Bishop Edward Dominic Fenwick, O.P., pioneer Catholic bishop of Ohio, as the first Catholic institution of higher learning in the Northwest Territory. Known as the Athenaeum, the college's first building, in downtown Cincinnati, was largely financed by European Catholics and particularly by Catholic citizens of Vienna. The first class numbered 60 students. From its beginning, the school was dedicated to the patronage of St. Francis Xavier. The Athenaeum attracted students from as far away as New Orleans, Mexico and Central America, and its educational quality drew many local Protestant students. At the invitation of Bishop John Purcell of Cincinnati. the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) assumed control of the institution in 1H40, ensuring a steady source of faculty. Under John A. Elet, S.L the first Jesuit president, the institution was renamed St. Xavier College. Xavier offered its first evening classes in 1841, and summer courses were introduced in 1914, thus beginning a tradi­ tion of serving the unique needs and schedules of professionals and aspiring professionals in the Cincinnati community. In 1920, the college moved to its present site in Avondale, and in 1930 was renamed Xavier University, reflecting its growth and complexity. While women had been attending Xavier since its early years. Xavier's undergraduate "day" college became coeducational in 1969, and in 1980 Xavier acquired the Edgccliff College programs and integrated them with those at Xavier. By 1987. Edgecliff taculty, staff and students were moved onto the Xavier campus. Xavier University celebrates another milestone in its history this year as the Class of 1988 takes part in Xavier's !50th commencement. Xavier's growth in over a century and a half since its founding reflects its origins as a teaching institution which soundly prepares students t<:1r careers or graduate study or both. A Xavier education, particularly at the undergraduate leveL is marked by an emphasis on liberal arts learning, contained in Xavier's core curriculum. The Seal of Xavier University

The Seal of Xavier University combines three principal ideas: St. Francis Xavier, patron of the university; the Jesuit order of which he was a distinguished member; and the university. The five vertical stripes suggest the coat of arms of the Xavier family. A right arm wearing the Jesuit robe holds aloft the crucifix. signifying St. Francis Xavier preaching Christ crucified. The three sea shells signify the three journeys of Xavier into the Orient. Above the shield is the Jesuit seal, IHS, the ftrst three letters of the name Jesus in Greek. Below is the Jesuit motto, AMDG [Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam}. which translates "to the Greater Glory of God," and the words Vidit Mirabilia Magna which translate "he has seen great wonders."'

The Most Reverend Rembert G. Weakland, O.S.B., Archbishop of Milwaukee

When discussing the ''movers and s.hakcrs" in the Catholic Church in the Unitcd States, oJle. of the people most likely to be mentioned is the Archbishop of Milwaukee, the Most Reverend Rembert G. Weakland. As chairman of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops' Ad Hoc Committee on Catholic Social Teaching and the U.S. Economy, Archbishop Weakland dlsturbed complacent American Catholics. Americans have pointed with pride to the comforts inherent in a largely middle-class society. Rut the Wcakland-lcd bishops have spoken up, suggesting Americans arc in danger of earning the title of 'hypocrite' when they said. ··No one may claim the name 'Christian' and be comfortable in the face of the hunger, home!essness, insecurity. and injustice !()lmd in the United States and the world." Archbishop Weakland is constantly working to move the people of the church from the status quo closer to the harmony God has composed for us in the divine plan. He is active as cochairman of the Consultation between the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, and as advisor to the National ContCrence of Catholic Bishops Committee f(n· Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs. His ability to get things done and thereby effect improvements has been recognized over the years with positions of increas­ ing responsibilities. Father Weakland was elected a coadjutor archabbot of the Benedictine order in 1963. Four years later. the abbots of the world elected Rembert Weakland to the post of abbot primate of the Benedictine Confederation. In 1973. they reelected him to a second term. But on Sept. 20, 1977, Pope Paul VI made Abbot Weakland a man !Or ALL people by appointing him archbishop of Mihvaukce, Wiscom;in. If an effective leader is one who generates ideas by leading discussions on a wid\! variety of topics, Archbishop Wcak\;md certainly qualifies. At Xavier's commencement exercise 35 years ago the speaker said. "the moral fiber of this and other countries have reached an all-time lov..'. Selfishness and corruption have reached into the highest places:· Receiving an hunoro:ny Doctor of Laws degree in 1953 was the new president of the American :\1edical Association. Dr. Edward 1. McCormick. Dr. McCormick\. son attended those commencement exercises. And he is with us again tDday. Jesuit Father Richard A. McCormick is taking his father's place on this commencement program. Since 1957 Father McCormick has been a protCssor of moral theology. Erst at the Jesuit :.eminary in West Baden. indiana. later at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetmvn University. and now as the John A. ()'Brien Protl:ssor of Christian Ethics at the University of Notre Dame. The moral dimensions in mankind's little decisions as well as the larger problems arc all ~erious topics for this prolific author. He has offered stimulating food for thought in the many books and articles he has \Vrittcn. including: Ambiguity in Moral Choice. Doing Evil to Achicv·e Good. "The Problem of Population." "Judaism and the Christian Seminary Curriculum:· "An American Catholic Catechism:· Mora/1"'-i'orms and Catholic Tradition. and "Personal Vulucs in Puhlic Policy." Perhaps his most significant contribution to the continuing concern for greater moral understanding in society was his service as editor of "Moral ~'otcs" publi~hed in Theological Studies magazine. Annually. he exCJmincd the current literature in all areas of moral theology and added a balanced and judicious interpretJtion of comemporary mural issues. Father ~tcCormick has been credited with forming. directly or indirectly. most of today\ Roman Catholic moral theologians. Father McCormick has dared to look beyond the obvious in examining the mmal diml'nsiom of a variety of subjects. But his greatest legacy to us is in his writings on the complex field of bioerhics and the delicate is~uc~ new to the management of life and death. Father McCormick. who has been respectfully called "The Gray Eminence of Roman Catholic Moral Theology." reminds us that in an era of computers and conglomerates, automation and plastic. we must not forget it is ~till the individual person who makes the decisions on how. why, when. or if the conveniences of lechnology· are to be used. Joseph S. Stern, Jr.. grew up in Avondale, ncar the Xavier campus, and was an usher at the Xavier football games. He even remembers the wild times in the student stands when Xavier played the Carlisle Indians. JosephS. Stern, Jr., is a doer <:~nd he loves Cincinnati. And he puts his hands and his heart and his mind on the line to help this city he loves. He is a trustee of the Children's Hospital Medical Center, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and the Cincinnati Historical Society. In the past, he has served as a trustee of Family Service of Cincinnati and as cofounder and president of Friends of the Cincinnati Public Library. He has also served as president of the Cincinnati Musical Festival Association. Mr. Stern enthusiastically identifies the public library as the "universal university .. or the "poor man's university." It is his firm conviction that learning is a basic clement in the answer to some of the world's problems. And the library is there as a part of that answer. ThHt explains why he has been a willing worker. former president, and member of the board of trustees for the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library for the past 28 years. This energetic man retired from his position as president and chairman of the board at U.S. Shoe Corp. 20 years ago. Aut he ha.~ hardly slowed down. He bas written a book, to be published next year, on letters from presidents of the United States; he has researched and written numerous articles on specific Cincinnati landmarks and events for the Cincinnati Historical Society: he teaches a required course on ht1siness policy to business school seniors at the University of Cincinnati; and he works f(Jr our city. Joseph Stern's love fOr the city of Cincinnati has become public knowledge. So the mayor and city council asked him to accept the special responsibilities of chairman of the Greater Cincinnati Bicentennial Commission. Xavier University honors Joseph S. Stern, Jr., with the degree of Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa. because he has personified the Jesuit ideals of unselfish service to others. leadership in action, and continuing efforts to advHnce the level or education in our community.

Honors are awarded on the basis of outstanding achievement in academic study. The student must have com­ pleted at least half of the degree requirements and half of the courses in the major field at Xavier University to be eligible for honors. These honors arc inscribed on the student's diploma. printed in the commencement program and on the student's official university permanent record. Summa Cum Laude Undergraduate students who have earned a quality point average of 3.90 on a 4 point scale in college work will be recognized as graduating Summa Cum Laude. Magna Cum Laude Undergraduate students who have earned a quality point average of 175 on a 4 point scale in college work will be recognized as graduating Magna Cum Laude. Cum Laude Undergraduate students who have earned a quality point average of 3.50 on a 4 point scale in college work will be recognized as graduating Cum Laude.

Academic Apparel History and Significance

The history of academic dress and its significance has its beginnings from the earliest days of the old univer­ sities. As early as the fourteenth century some colleges required scholars to wear long gowns. Specifications of academic apparel became greatly diversified in Europe. American colleges and universities decided it beneficial to have a standardized intercollegiate academic apparel code f(Jr the United States. In May 1895, representatives from interested institutions met at Cnlumbia Univcr~ity and adopted a code for academic dress. The "Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume" was formed in 1902 to serve as the information source in matters pertaining to academic dress. In 1932 the American Council on Education appointed a committee to revise the apparel codes established in 1895. Reviev.' and revisions to the !895 academic apparel codes occurred in 1932 and 1959. Gowns The gown for the bachelor's degree has pointed sleeves and is worn closed. The master's degree gown has oblong sleeves which open at the wrist and is designed with fasteners so that it may be worn open or closed. Both bachelor's and master's degree gowns arc black with no trimmings except for those worn by the students who arc members of the national Jesuit honor society Alpha Sigma Nu. These gowns arc maroon \"-'ith gold trim. Hoods Hoods are worn for the master's degree. The material of the hood must be black and made oft he same material as the gown. The master's hood should be three and one-half tCct in length and lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree. The edging is to be three inches of velvet or velveteen with the color being distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains. The colors that pertain to Xavier's degrees are as follows: Arts...... White Business . Yale Blue Education ...... Light Blue Science...... Golden Yellow M/Hospital Administration ...... Kelly Green Public Administration ...... Peacock Blue Caps Black mortarboards of the same material as the gown are to be worn with the tassel of the color pertaining to the degree fastened to the middle point of the top of the cap.
