  • Changes in the Fish Community of a Western Caribbean Estuary After the Expansion of an Artificial Channel to the Sea
water Article Changes in the Fish Community of a Western Caribbean Estuary after the Expansion of an Artificial Channel to the Sea Juan J. Schmitter-Soto * and Roberto L. Herrera-Pavón El Colegio de la Frontera Sur, Av. Centenario km 5.5, Chetumal 77014, Quintana Roo, Mexico; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +52-983-835-0440 (ext. 4302) Received: 30 October 2019; Accepted: 2 December 2019; Published: 6 December 2019 Abstract: Increased connectivity between coastal lagoons and the sea is expected to entail a greater proportion of marine species in the former. Chetumal Bay, estuary of the Hondo river into the Caribbean, had a limited access to the sea until the opening of the Zaragoza Canal. We sought changes in the fish community from 1999–2001 (just after an expansion of the canal) to 2015–2018. The same fishing gear was used, in the same localities, during all seasons. Total fish abundance and mean local richness decreased, although total abundance increased in the polyhaline zone. Diversity was greater in the oligohaline zone in 1999–2001, and in the mesohaline zone in 2015–2018. Three guilds were absent in 2015–2018: Medium-sized herbivores, large piscivores, and medium-sized planktivores. Abundance of small benthivores decreased by decade; medium-sized piscivores and small planktivores became more abundant in 2015–2018 in the polyhaline zone. These changes may be due to the opening of the channel, but illegal fishing outside the bay may explain the decrease in juveniles of large piscivores, and erosion in the innermost part may be destroying important habitats.

  • Green School Tulum
GREEN SCHOOL TULUM TULUM, MEXICO FOUNDING HEAD OF SCHOOL START DATE: FALL 2021 WWW.GREENSCHOOL.ORG The Green School Way We educate for sustainability through community-integrated, entrepreneurial learning, in a natural environment. Our holistic, student-guided approach inspires and empowers us to be green leaders. This is the Green School Way. OVERVIEW Green School Tulum is a brand-new and one-of-a-kind endeavor. With the guidance of experienced school founders and visionaries, Green School Tulum plans to open in fall of 2021. It will be the fourth school to be established in the global Green School network. The first school, Green School Bali, was established in 2006. Green School New Zealand will open in 2020 and Green School South Africa will open in 2021. Crafted on three hectares of lush jungle and cenotes, Green School Tulum will be a place that celebrates the individual while fostering a cohesive community of learners. Green School Tulum will stand strong at the heart of a holistic residential project within the magical jungle of Tulum, a couple of miles away from the Caribbean Sea. Built out of low impact materials, Green School Tulum will incorporate bamboo and locally sourced woods and materials, as well as permaculture principles, into its operation and design. The school will be an extraordinary milestone for the local community, an inspiration for other schools in Mexico, and a reliable reference for the rest the world. Respecting and embracing nature are at the core of the Green School experience, and, with that foundation, the school will offer students and their families a learning program unlike any other – one that prioritizes community well-being, a systems-thinking approach, and the development of problem- solving skills.
